Get Smart on the big screen - a movie review

AP Matt Sayles pic of Steve Carell and Anne HathawayI went to see Get Smart the other day. Judging by the box office numbers, I wasn't alone. Of course, I was curious about how one of my favorite TV shows from the '60s would be translated to the big screen. Would it be an inventive retelling in the tradition of The Fugitive, Maverick and The Addam's Family, or would it make me want to weep in horror like the dreadful I Spy, Bewitched, The Wild, Wild West and The Avengers? (And that's only the tip of the awful iceberg).

Would you believe it if I told you Get Smart falls somewhere in between? I could use the line many other reviewers have copped; you know, "The new Get Smart missed it by that much." Yes, well, it's true. Get Smart is not great on the big screen. It's okay. Nothing too shameful, but neither is it that inspired or wickedly built on the premise of the original situation comedy.

The Daily Show: June 18, 2008 - VIDEOS

Jon and Steve"White Stuff on Mars": New discoveries on Mars make room for coke jokes and groantastic puns.

There Will Be Flood"/"Wet Hot American Bummer" (HA!): Much of the Midwest is currently underwater, due to storms, failing levies and acts of not-God. Reporters are already looking for the most dramatic ways to demonstrate the severity of the situation, and President Bush is obviously dreading a visit to the disaster area. Correspondents Jason Jones and Wyatt Cenac reported from a flooded scene, just to dig up some of that dated "George Bush doesn't care about black people" stuff. I guess they had to do it now, as mentioning it in the next night's episode may have been a little weird, what with Mike Meyers being the guest and all. I'm waiting for Wyatt to do his own correspondent field report before I decide how I feel about him. I'm kind of liking his perpetual angry-face, though. And did the audience know for what they were applauding? It sounded like more blind, trained seal clapping.

Get Smart coming to DVD (no, not that one) - VIDEO

Get Smart DVDWe've already told you about the complete series Get Smart DVDs, but did you know that there was an updated version of the show, and it starred Andy Dick?! The complete series of this version is being released on DVD on June 3.

I actually knew about this, but I always thought it was just a pilot movie or a pilot that didn't go to series, but it actually lasted seven episodes on FOX. The odd thing is, it aired in 1995, when Dick started NewsRadio. Apparently he only appeared in the pilot (according to the IMDB link above) and then went on to NewsRadio from there. That sounds a little odd to me, since he played the son of Agent 86 and Agent 99. Plus he's on the cover of the DVD. Hmmmm. If anyone has any other information about the show let me know in the comments below.

After the jump, the opening credits of the show.

Update: According to TV.com, Dick was in every episode. Also, one of the extras on the set is in an episode of NewsRadio, which is understandable (plus an ep of T.J. Hooker, which is not).

Comic-Con: Warner Bros. Panel Report

Rock and Carrell at Comic-Con

Friday at Comic-Con got underway with the Warner Brothers presentation. The swag bag included a Get Smart t-shirt with "KAOS" written on one side and "CONTROL" on the other. Not so surprisingly, no one under the age of 20 seemed to know what this meant, but Warner Brothers needn't worry because the kids love The Rock. And, because this is Comic-Con, The Rock (Agent 23) put in an appearance along with his Get Smart co-stars Steve Carrell, Masi "unofficial Comic-Con poster boy" Oka, Studio 60's Nate Torrence and Borat's Ken Davitian mercifully wearing pants.

TV Obits: Wyler, Frazier, Philippe

Gretchen WylerA roundup of TV people from in front of the camera and behind the scenes who have passed away.

  • Gretchen Wyler: She was a veteran TV, Broadway, and film actress and animal rights activist. On TV she had regular stints on Dallas and On Our Own, and guest starred on many series: MacGyver, Charlie's Angels, Judging Amy, Providence, Designing Woman, Who's The Boss, Falcon Crest, Remington Steele, Benson, St. Elsewhere, The Wonderful World of Disney, Hart to Hart, Naked City, and a ton more. The show I'll always remember her for is Friends. In the episode where Monica and Phoebe catered a funeral, she was the widow who wouldn't pay them and sang a song. She died at age 75 of complications from breast cancer.

Tom Poston dead at 85

Tom PostonTom Poston, one of the classic veterans of TV comedy, died earlier today at his home in Los Angeles. He appeared on The Steve Allen Show in the 1950s and Newhart in the 1980s.

Poston played handyman George Utley on Newhart, and was also a regular on another Bob Newhart series, Bob. And to keep the connection to Newhart going, he played Cliff "The Peeper" Murdock on The Bob Newhart Show in the 70s. Poston also appeared on Grace Under Fire, Mork & Mindy, The Simpsons, Will & Grace, Home Improvement, Murphy Brown, Get Smart, Coach, The Love Boat, Studio One, The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, Just Shoot Me, That 70s Show, and dozens of other shows over the years.

Poston was married to actress Suzanne Pleshette, who played Newhart's wife Emily on The Bob Newhart Show.

Alan Arkin joins Carell and Hathaway on Get Smart movie

Get SmartFresh off his Supporting Actor Oscar win for Little Miss Sunshine, Alan Arkin has been cast in the new movie version of Get Smart, which Adam first mentioned last fall. Arkin has been signed to play the Chief of CONTROL, the spy agency for which Maxwell Smart and Agent 99 work. The Chief was played by Edward Platt in the classic TV version of the show, and having the grouchy Arkin play the role of Max's exasperated boss seems like a good fit.

Phyllis Diller still going strong at 89

Phyllis Diller"The day I grab my crotch, it'll mean it's falling off."

That's one of the many gems (about Madonna) you'll get from veteran comedienne Phyllis Diller in this interview over at MSNBC. The 89 year-old, who I have always found to be very funny, "offically" retired four years ago, but she has a recurring role on Family Guy and still pops up in TV (Robot Chicken, The Bold and the Beautiful) and movies, like her appearance in The Aristocrats. But she's not doing any standup touring anymore (neither would you if you were pushing 90), and spends a lot of time painting.

In the interview, Diller also gives her opinion on a variety of topics, including O.J. Simpson ("what an ass"), Michael Richards ("he should have just crawled into a hole and shut up"), and the plastic surgery she's had in the past.

There's a documentary out of her final performance in 2002, and it's available on DVD.

Get Smart coming to theaters

steve carellHollywood has yet again dipped into the Pot of Unoriginal Ideas with the Ladle of Mediocrity, so hold out your bowls like poor Dickensian orphans, America for a steaming pile of Get Smart, the movie.

Perhaps with Steve Carell cast in the role originally made famous by the late Don Adams, this movie might be worth seeing, but when is the incessant retooling of old TV shows into feature films going to stop? Has the entertainment system become so masturbatory that it can't even look beyond itself anymore for fresh, new ideas?

At any rate, it was reported recently that Anne Hathaway has also been added to the cast in the role of Agent 99. Peter Segal (Tommy Boy, 50 First Dates) is directing the film, which begins shooting in March.
