Animation news: Care Bears and Strawberry Shortcake return, a bluegrass Simpsons tribute, an Astro Boy movie, and more

astro boyHere's some animation news from the last few days:

First, both Care Bears and Strawberry Shortcake are coming back to television as part of a new Saturday morning animation block on CBS called KEWLopolis. Care Bears: Adventures in Care-A-Lot and Strawberry Shortcake join brand new series Sushi Pack and Dino Squad. Returning shows include Cake, Horseland, Sabrina and Trollz.

Tom Ruegger and Nicholas Hollander (Tiny Toons, Animaniacs) are behind Sushi Pack, about a gang of crime-fighting sushi. The characters are vaguely fish-like, which is odd since "sushi" refers to rice, and not fish. I guess animated rice isn't that interesting.

Animation news: Frisky Dingo, Danny Phantom, Mr. Men, and Joel Hodgson visits the Cartoon Dump

Mr. HappyHere's some animation news from the past week or so:

First, don't forget that Frisky Dingo's second season kicks off on August 26 on Adult Swim at midnight. That's next Sunday.

In a younger vein, kids can look forward to brand new episodes of Danny Phantom starting tomorrow, August 20. New episodes will premiere throughout the week at 4:00 p.m. each day, ending with the hour-long TV movie Phantom Planet at 8:00 p.m. on Friday.

Adult Swim news: what to look forward to

frisky dingoHere's what's coming up on Adult Swim:

Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, as mentioned previously, has received an order for thirty new episodes.

Moral Orel has also been picked up for a third season (which I already knew, but I was sworn to secrecy until it was officially announced). Also, the latter half of the second season kicks off this Sunday.

Frisky Dingo on iTunes

frisky dingoThe other day I mentioned Moral Orel had been added to iTunes, and I found out today that Frisky Dingo, the new series from the brains behind Sealab 2021, has also been added. Between airings of Adult Swim and free episodes of many of these shows on Adult Swim Fix (with the exception of Moral Orel), I wonder how many people actually buy these episodes through the iTunes store. Then again, I also like the idea of having multiple choices when it comes to seeing these shows, so I guess I'll just shut my big stupid mouth. Also, and I think I've said this before, some of these Adult Swim shows work just fine on a smaller screen (if a video iPod is your player of choice), so I say "keep adding more shows to iTunes, people at Adult Swim who do that sort of thing."

Frisky Dingo: Meet Killface (series premiere)

frisky dingo(S01E01) This is an early review.

Adam Reed and Matt Thompson, the brains behind the sorely missed Sealab 2021, just might have another praise worthy series on their hands with Frisky Dingo. The series will focus on a struggle between good and evil as the murderous Killface faces off against super hero Awesome-X. In the premiere episode, we're introduced to Killface, but not Awesome-X, though we do get a glimpse of the mailbox of his alter ego, Xander Crews in the last scene.

The Five: Adam's fall picks

homer simpsonOkay gang, here's what I'm looking forward to in the new fall season. Slip on your reading socks and enjoy:

1. The return of South Park: Many shows have a tendency of starting off strong and then entering a slow decline if they stay on for too long. South Park is one series that I think has actually improved with every season, and last season's episodes, most notably the two-part "Cartoon Wars," contained some of the most hysterical and vicious jabs at every religion, political affiliation and societal norm you could think of. As Stan so rightly points out, either everything is okay to make fun of, or nothing is. That mantra is what makes South Park still one of the best shows on television, even as it enters its tenth year.

2 and 3. New Adult Swim shows from the creators of Home Movies and Sealab 2021: Brendon Small created one of my favorite shows of all time, Home Movies. His new Metalocalypse, which he created with Tommy Blacha (a writer for Conan and TV Funhouse) won't have the same poignancy of Home Movies, but that's just fine with me. Also, the crew behind Sealab 2021, an Adult Swim "classic" if it's not too early to use such a term, are also returning with Frisky Dingo, the tale of a super hero named Awesome-X whose secret identity is that of Xander Crews, a billionaire who makes money from the toys based on his alter ego. He battles Killface, an evil mastermind who wants to plunge the Earth into the sun, but only if he doesn't lose interest in his plan. I'm anxious to see how both of these shows fare.
