Transformers movie now has more ties to the cartoon

TransformersWhile the first Transformers movie was, in my opinion, several different kinds of suck, I give props to Michael Bay and company for doing one good move (and quite possibly the only one) with regards to the sequel. Frank Welker will be doing the voice of Soundwave. For those who are unaware, Welker did the voice of the same character in the 1980's cartoon. He'll be joining Peter Cullen (the voice of Optimus Prime) as one of the only two voices from that series that is involved with the movie franchise.

While I have less hope for the sequel then I did for the original, I do recall Soundwave's eerie metallic voice back when I used to watch that cartoon, and cannot help but think that it would be appropriate for a giant robot bad guy in any series about giant robots. Now if only Michael Bay would make other good decisions to go along this one and not continue to screw up one of my favorite childhood icons.

A new Transformers series?

MegatronToon Zone points to a brief snippet on voice actor Frank Welker's personal Web site that seems to hint at a brand new Transformers television series, based on the original cartoon / half-hour toy commercial. The quote is from last December, and given the crazy nature of this bizness called television, who knows if such a series is still a reality or not, but I'd certainly be interested to see how it compares to the original. I figure once the movie is released they'd probably also release the new cartoon while everyone is still in the grips of Transformermania.

Welker was the voice of Megatron, Soundwave and Galvatron on the original Transformers cartoon. He's also the voice of Fred on Scooby-Doo and has done countless other voices, as well.

Short-Lived Shows: Foofur

foofurThe creation of Foofur, a Saturday morning cartoon that ran on NBC for two seasons starting in 1986, is typically credited to Freddy Monnickendam, the man who helped bring The Smurfs to American television and who later created The Snorks. However, Don Markstein of Toonopedia writes that the cartoon is more precisely attributed to Phil Mendez, who created Kissyfur one year earlier. Whoever created it, Foofur was a staple of my Saturday mornings, and I was glad to find a few episodes on YouTube.
