PBS ombudsman criticizes Sesame Street for 'POX News' joke

Poor Oscar the Grouch. Not even PBS' ombudsman will cut him a break. No wonder he's so grouchy. Well that and he lives in a garbage can. That would make me more than a little perturbed.

A clip of a two-year episode of Sesame Street popped up on YouTube thanks to conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart's on his Big Hollywood blog in which Grundgetta, Oscar's girlfriend, makes a crack about "POX News" that sounds very close to "FOX News." PBS' ombudsman Michael Getler said while the name could be construed as a "clever and appropriate title" to the "Grouch News Network," the joke about the reference "should have been resisted.

I was shocked when I saw it. Oscar the Grouch has a frigging girlfriend?!?

Guess who took this photo of Sean Hannity

Hannity
This is a picture of FOX News host Sean Hannity at the Yankees/Phillies game the other night (congratulations Yankees, blah, blah, etc). Ordinarily this wouldn't be a big deal, but it's who's taking the picture that makes it interesting. It's...Keith Olbermann! And Hannity is taking a picture of him, as the photo shows. No, they're not going to use the photos in some court case against each other, they actually get along (well, at the ball game anyway -- America's pastime!).

Whoopi takes on Bill O'Reilly (dressed as Dracula)

One last Halloween post. Bill O'Reilly appeared on The View on Friday, dressed as Dracula. It's a basic costume, but it suits him. Of course, the talk turned to the Fox News vs. the White House story, and then O'Reilly, for some bizarre reason, calls Whoopi "jealous" because he has a best-selling book. But what's equally odd is Whoopi's response, where she lists the awards she has won. I think that has been boiling inside her for a while (that part happens about 7:48 in).

And what's with all the weird mugging and looking around that Whoopi is doing? She's actually kinda of an odd person, isn't she?

Jon Stewart explains Fox News

Whatever your political opinions are and however your cable news tastes run, you have to admit that this Daily Show examination of how Fox News works is pretty smart. Not just as an explanation at how the news side works with the non-news side of the network, but as an explanation of how any organization can spin things their way.

Something "crazy" is going to happen on Shep Smith's show today

Shep SmithShep Smith is one of my favorite people on TV, and I never miss his show at 3 PM each day. Today we might want to make a special effort to watch.

On Facebook last night, Smith promised that "something crazy" was going to happen on the show. Now, I'm assuming it's on the show because he says it's going to happen "right here," and I assume he means the show and not on his Facebook page. Check out the video and see for yourself.

Any guesses? He has a new site but, jeez, I hope that's not all it is.

Glenn Beck don't come cheap

Glenn Beck on the cover of his new bookIf your town wants to honor Glenn Beck with his own day, you better check the cushions in the couch for change and start taking up a collection.

The mayor of Mount Vernon, Wash. recently gave Glenn Beck his own day, and the taxpayers will now have to fork over more than $17,000, most of which was for police overtime.

Where are the teabaggers when you actually need them to protest unfair taxation without representation?

Is the White House right about Fox News?

Fox NewsYou may have heard that the White House seems to have declared war on Fox News. President Obama has even gone as far as not appearing on one of the Fox News Sunday morning shows even though he appeared on every other network that morning. Now other White House spokespeople are openly saying that the network can't be trusted.

What do you think?

Is the White House right about Fox News?

Ann Coulter has the most annoying voice ever

Ann CoulterI don't fit neatly into any one political category. There are things I like about the Republican party and things I like about the Democratic party. I watch Fox News and CNN equally, and there are talking heads on both networks that I like and don't like.

I will say this, though: Ann Coulter has one of the most annoying voices on TV right now. It's hard to listen to what she's saying, because her whiny voice is so distracting. Sometimes when I'm just listening to her but not watching her, I almost expect to look over at the TV and see a cartoon character droning on about ... whatever.

I don't watch Saturday Night Live regularly, but surely someone must have spoofed her by now. With her nasal voice, hair fixation, and political opinions, she's like a skit waiting to happen.

Aside from their political views, what other commentators just bug the heck out of you? (Yes, I realize I'm going to be in the eye of the storm here; keep it as clean as possible!)

Is Kimmel pulling a Letterman?

Jimmy KimmelIt's official, "pulling a Letterman" means sleeping with a co-worker. Why? Because I said so.

It seems that ABC's late night host Jimmy Kimmel has been in a relationship with a member of his staff as well. This time, the host has been dating the show's head writer Molly McNeary for "several months."

This forced Fox News to pose the question if Kimmel is "pulling a Letterman" and ask if he should be forced to apologize on the air to Ben Affleck. That normally would be hilarious if Fox News didn't handle all of their news with the same level of integrity and tact.

And yes, I'm jealous they came up with that line first.

Beck can't explain his own explanation about Obama

Glenn BeckEvery time I watch a TV talking head like Glenn Beck, I usually walk away with the same thought I had every time I walked out of my economics class in college: "What the hell were they talking about?"

That's because there isn't anything journalistic or scientific about their pontifications. It's all "gut talk," particularly Beck who throws around more wild and unfocused theories about the ongoing war between "us vs. them" than a homeless preacher in a bus station. Chances are if you actually sat down and simply asked him "what did you mean by (x)", he would give you a 1,700 word answer that answered everything but the question you asked him.

Here's Glenn Beck, before he was "Glenn Beck"

Glenn Beck is a controversial, political show host and author now, but he used to be a crazy radio DJ. You can probably still see some of that in his work. Here's a promo he did for for Y95 back in the 80s. It has all of the things that are now cliche, including wacky sounds, animals, and the term "morning zoo." Actually, they were probably cliche back then too.

Shows You Should Be Watching: Red Eye

Red Eye
There used to be a lot of TV shows on overnight that were worth watching. I don't mean repeats of sitcoms or dramas that usually air earlier, but original programming geared towards the night owl. There aren't many shows like that anymore, but there's one on Fox News (yes, Fox News) at 3 AM and it's well worth catching (if you're worried about staying up that late, well, that's why God put DVRs on this Earth).

If I had to describe Red Eye it would be like this: it's a mix of Politically Incorrect and The McLaughlin Group, only for people who are up late at night drinking or eating too much junk food, with a host who comes at things from a conservative viewpoint but it's not really a political show. They go more for the jokes than they stress any ideology, and it's actually really funny. Like The Daily Show or The Colbert Report, it can't be easy to write a show that's on every single night, but host Greg Gutfeld pulls it off.

Katie Couric's new web show debuts tonight

Glenn Beck hates the mainstream media, but not enough to ignore it when he has a new book coming out like he does this week. He's the first guest tonight on Katie Couric's new web show, which will debut at 7 PM. In this preview, Beck reveals who he would have liked to have seen in the White House (and who would have been worse).

What You Missed Last Night: The Audacity of Hos

If you've been watching television over the summer, you probably know about the Glenn Beck/FOX News investigation into the ACORN organization. Recently two young college students went undercover at one of the organization's offices and tried to get money for their prostitution ring. Last night Jon Stewart and The Daily Show had a very funny piece on it. (Video also here.)

They've come up with great titles for segments, but "The Audacity of Hos" is one of their best.

ABC's John Stossel moves to Fox

john_stossel_20_20_ABCYou might think it's surprising that 20/20 anchor John Stossel is leaving ABC for Fox, but it's not really much of shock. It seems to me that there have been other high profile names that were once considered liberal firebrands -- Geraldo Rivera and Dennis Miller come to mind -- who've grown older and changed their stripes, finding a home at Fox.

Stossel, whom I recall as a staunch consumer reporter and a man who liked to tear down hypocrisy at every turn, has been a regular at ABC News for nearly three decades. Now, he's moving on to Fox Business Network where he'll have a weekly show, and Fox News where he'll make frequent guest appearances.
