Flight of the Conchords revisit original radio show

bret and jemaine, Flight of the Conchords
Back in the day, before Flight of the Conchords' Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie became America's favorite Kiwi musician-comedians, they did a six-episode radio series for BBC Radio 2. The audio has been floating around YouTube for a while, pleasing the fans desperate to get as much folkin' action as possible. To make things a little more legit and extra-fun (thanks to bonus materials), BBC Audio is about to re-release a bigger CD set of the Flight of the Conchords radio show.

Flight of the Conchords to release new album

Flight of the Conchords albumOh, my. This is just like Christmas! Christmas in July. It's been revealed that Flight of the Conchords will have a new album coming out from Sub Pop Records, featuring music from the second season of their HBO series. It's called "I Told You I Was Freaky."

Despite the fact that season two didn't pack quite the bite that the first did, we're getting "Carol Brown" and "Too Many Dicks (On the Dance Floor)," and that's all that really matters.

Flight of the Conchords: New Cup

flight of the conchords new cup recap review
(S02E02) "We're back at square one ... Typical isn't it? We were at square two, but now we're back." – Murray, after bailing the boys out of jail

For me, the best thing about Flight of the Conchords is the deadpan minimalist humor that stands in sharp contrast to the elaborate song sequences. (It should be noted that my favorite FotC song is "I Like to Rock the Party.") It's the comedy that's barely there that makes this show funny. Murray checking his notes to confirm that Bret should have a guitar. Bret offering nut loaf to potential "Janes." The "dad guitar." That's the good stuff.

Flight of the Conchords season two - An early look - VIDEO

FotC
You guys, you guys! Flight of the Conchords is back. The show saw huge success when it premiered on HBO way back in 2007, and the soundtrack has been a must for all comedy fans that have their iPods surgically attached to their ears. Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement have captured hearts with their awkward deliveries and showed the world that funny music can be original and catchy without sacrificing the jokes.

The second season will kick off in January, but the first episode is already available on FunnyOrDie.com. You can also click after the jump to watch the full episode (US only) and read some words that I thought up about it. Catch the episode before it goes offline in a few days! Naturally, spoilers ahead, as well.

Flight of the Conchords online premiere: An early Christmas miracle - VIDEOS

Flight of the ConchordsIf you are anything like me, then you have been dying to see the second season of Flight of the Conchords since the last credits rolled. I was starting to doubt my ability to make it until January, when Bret and Jemaine officially return to HBO, so thank goodness for the lovely folks at FunnyOrDie.com.

The website will be premiering FotC's first episode on Wednesday, December 17th at 12:00 p.m. EST, just in time to keep me from doing something terribly illegal and breaking and entering some place to hunt down the new episodes myself. Make sure you start watching the episode as soon as you can, because it will be up for only four days. That means if you budget your time like a hardcore fan should, forty-eight viewings can be squeezed out of that time frame. I know, I know: "Forty-eight viewings only?"

To ease the pain and hold you over those two and a half weeks, click after the jump and check out some of the promos that have been airing on HBO.

Flight of the Conchords to end after second season

Bret and McKenzieBad news, Flight of the Conchords fans. It looks like the upcoming season of their HBO show will be the end. The boys, Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, have confirmed that they've been having trouble making the second season, struggling with making new music and sitting around with a lot of half-songs, "an album's worth of beginnings of songs." Sure, sure, they deserve to take it easy, especially after bringing us twelve episodes of goodness, but can fans really help but feel brokenhearted? Commence full body-shaking sobbing.

Nine people who must host SNL next season

Flight of the ConchordsIf there were a way to completely stop people on the Internet from saying, "Why do you keep watching this? Saturday Night Live hasn't been good since the days of Gildaphil Belushikroyd Normfeyrrell!", I would punch that button (or that person). Thinking a little more optimistically, there can always be better days ahead, for SNL is forever renewable, with an ever changing cast and crew. The thing that gets the fastest turn-over is the host, who has the opportunity to bring something new and exciting from week to week.

Now that the so-so 33rd season is over, I like to pretend everyone at SNL has kicked aside all the beach time and BBQ invites to plan something exciting for their return. Picking good hosts is an important part of having a successful season, so I've compiled my own list of nine people that must host, just in case SNL decides to re-work the entire show based on blog responses. I'm just covering all my bases, all right?

Flight of the Conchords test new songs on tour

Bret and JemaineThis fan post from Oh No They Didn't! contains two super-sneaky clips of new songs from Flight of the Conchords' recent Milwaukee tour stop. The audio isn't top-notch, obviously, what with all the audience laughter, echo-y acoustics, and the overwhelming roar of girls everywhere doing that thing where they take off their bra under their shirt and then fling it on the stage. Chick magnets, Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement are. Anyway, we still have a long while to wait before their self-titled HBO show returns for a second season. Perhaps we can give a listen to this new material and start thinking about what January 2009 will bring.

The Best and Worst of 2007: Annie's list - VIDEOS

Annie's best and worst

I was going to write a long, elaborate intro about how excited I am that it's a new year, but I decided to make this image instead. Look out, Alec and Tina! There's a weeping angel behind you! And check out how Heidi is super excited to be with the not-so-excited guys from Flight of the Conchords. And it looks like David Anders enjoys speaking in big speech bubbles. No, I'm not still buzzed from New Year's Eve, I just have a little too much fun in Photoshop. However, I'm sure some of you are still somehow hungover from celebrating days and days ago, so let's jump right in...

Flight of the Conchords DVD may not have extras, but...

Flight of the ConchordsWhen I got the Flight of the Conchords DVD, I was slightly disappointed to see that there aren't any fun special features. I spent about ten minutes watching Bret and Jemaine dance through the title menu before I finally accepted that the two-disc set consisted only of the 12-episode season. Again, my disappointment was only slight, because the overall awesomeness of the series is enough to keep anyone happy. Little did I know there would be a sneaky surprise waiting for me in plain sight. This is an appropriate time to use "tee hee".

After watching about three marathon-runs of the DVD, I poked around the menus a bit more and saw that there was a language setting for Spanish. I usually like trying out foreign language dubbings on my DVDs at least once so that I can hear how much the voice actors sound like the on-screen people. Yes, I'm one of those types. Easily amused. Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that the guy playing Jemaine had a very similar deep voice, although Bret's guy was a little off-mark. Then the musical numbers rolled around and I almost fell out of my chair. They actually went through and re-recorded all the songs in Spanish?

Flight of the Conchords EP and pictures of Jemaine's lips - VIDEO

Flight of the ConchordsOver the past few weeks, my quiet adoration for Flight of the Conchords and their HBO show has quickly spiraled into something dangerously close to rabid fanaticism. This transformation is marked by my sudden desire -- nay, my sudden need -- to listen to and watch all that the boys have ever done, and then take screencaptures of everything and then use those screencaptures in Photoshop to make little 100 x 100 avatars so that I can share my love with other fans on Flight of the Conchords forums and message boards. However, I'm glad to say that I'm not quite there yet, because my self-control has helped me contain my creepiness to a certain extent. That said, I do have a PSD file of screencaptures of the last episode on my Desktop right now. I'm just saying.

Okay, enough story time, because I have some good stuff to share...

Flight of the Conchords: In the Limelight -- VIDEOS

Bret and JemaineMy absolute, hands-down favorite new show of this summer is HBO's Flight of the Conchords. The show stars Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement as stranger versions of themselves, musicians from New Zealand trying to make it in big, bag America, with little to no help from their pathetic manager, Murray (the extremely funny Kiwi comic Rhys Darby). But did you know that before the Flight of the Conchords show, there was a Flight of the Conchords band? Well, you probably already knew that, but I wanted to take a moment and marvel at the comedic beauty that is the Bret and Jemaine duo.
