NBC moves up lyrics show to compete with FOX's lyric show

nbcIn April, I told you about NBC's The Great American Singing Bee, a new competition series in which contestants are challenged to sing the correct lyrics to a song. Then, recently, I told you about Don't Forget the Lyrics, a show on FOX with pretty much the exact same concept.

The Great American Singing Bee was supposed to air this fall, but NBC isn't about to let FOX steal its thunder by releasing Don't Forget the Lyrics next month. What does that mean for you, the home viewer? It means that this summer, with The Great American Spelling Bee's debut bumped up to July 10 at 9:30 (and Lyrics debuting the next day), you'll have two chances to catch a premise no one really found that interesting in the first place.

Forgive me, that was presumptuous, but I maintain a show centering on strangers butchering songs is a concept that will get old rather quickly.

Adult Swim news: what to look forward to

frisky dingoHere's what's coming up on Adult Swim:

Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, as mentioned previously, has received an order for thirty new episodes.

Moral Orel has also been picked up for a third season (which I already knew, but I was sworn to secrecy until it was officially announced). Also, the latter half of the second season kicks off this Sunday.

Korgoth on Adult Swim Fix

korgothIf you haven't caught the occasional airings of the Korgoth of Barbaria pilot on Adult Swim, click on over to Adult Swim Fix right now to check it out. If you're one of those people tired of all the fifteen-minute minimalist weirdness and want something more substantive and in the same vein as Venture Bros., you'll probably dig Korgoth. The series was created by SpongeBob SquarePants' Aaron Springer, and also features the talents of Genndy Tartakovsky and Ren and Stimpy and Mad Magazine artist Bill Wray. If they remove it from the Fix before you have a chance to check it out, you can still catch it this Sunday at 10 pm, and again on Saturday the 16th at 11:30. The series focuses on a barbarian living in a post-apocalyptic world who brutal maims bad guys and anyone else he doesn't like. Hopefully it will get picked up as a full series.

Perfect Hair Forever is coming back

perfect hair foreverOne of my favorite new Adult Swim offerings of the last year or so, Perfect Hair Forever, is coming back with sixteen new episodes in the second quarter of 2007. Don't bother setting your Tivos or even going near your television, though, because the new episodes will be aired only on AdultSwim.com. Despite being slightly miffed they're not airing the episodes on television, I'm glad to see they're making new episodes of this insanely off-kilter ode to the anime genre. Still, the idea of only doing six episodes a la FLCL seemed fitting for Perfect Hair Forever, but hell, if the Williams Street fellas have more weirdness to share, I'm all about it.

Hey, full seasons of Venture Bros. and Home Movies over on Adult Swim's site

home moviesGreetings, home audience. I just wanted to take a second and let ya'll know that over on Adult Swim Fix right now you can check out the complete first seasons of both Venture Bros. and Home Movies. They tend to take episodes down and replace them with new ones rather quickly, so check them out while you can. Only yesterday they had the complete first season of Perfect Hair Forever, but now those are gone. Don't make the same mistake I did, friends. Unplug the phone, lock all your doors, and watch all of those episodes from beginning to end. This is the only way to prove your loyalty to these fine programs. Plus, every time you watch one of the episodes, one dollar is donated to Jerry's Kids*. Please, do what's right, America.

* "Jerry's Kids" refers to Jerry Bourdeux, assistant sales manager at my local Target. He's trying to collect singles so he can take his two oldest boys to their first strip club. Your generosity can help make this a reality.
