Is Dr Horrible the One? - VIDEO

Dr. Horrible
Technically it is Buffy/Angel week, but all things Whedon have a way of just melding together into one big stew. So it's a fortuitous bit of timing that a trailer for Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog was released this week. For those still unaware of just what Dr. Horrible is, I think it was summed up best by Nathan Fillion in a recent interview. It's about a super-villain (Neil Patrick Harris) who falls in love with a girl (Felicia Day), and the super-hero (Nathan Fillion) who blows it for him. The super-hero is kind of a dick. And... it's a musical. I think it could be very much more than that. More on that, and the new trailer, after the jump.

What are the best movies based on TV shows?

Mission ImpossibleWe've talked a lot here at TV Squad about movies made from TV shows. A while back, Anna listed her picks for the 10 best movies based on TV shows, and then Paul listed his picks for the 10 worst. (I also chimed in with my picks for 5 TV shows that are better than the original movie). Now Rotten Tomatoes picks the 50 best movies made from TV shows, and the results are...odd.

Now, some of the choices are predictable if not accurate, including Star Trek II, Wayne's World, South Park, Mission: Impossible, The Untouchables, and The Brady Bunch Movie. And fans of Firefly will be happy to see Serenity on the list (and in the top 10!).

Tim Minear gets a new deal

Tim MinearAs Roger Daltry once sang, "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss." Tim Minear has signed a new seven figure deal that will keep him at 20th Century Fox TV for another two years. His job will continue to involve working on existing shows while developing new drama projects. He's now been at 20th for over a decade, counting among his credits The X-Files, Strange World, Angel, Firefly, Wonderfalls, The Inside, and Drive. Currently he is working as a consulting producer on Joss Whedon's upcoming Dollhouse.

Help save Dollhouse ... before it even debuts!

Dollhouse

I have to admit, this made me chuckle.

You know how you latch on to a show that gets so-so ratings (Arrested Development, Jericho, Moonlight, etc.) and then the show is canceled and you're forced to scramble fans together to send nuts or whatever to the network to demonstrate how much you want the show to stick around? Well, why wait until the show is canceled to do that? In fact, why wait until the show even premieres?

Fans of the new FOX/Joss Whedon show Dollhouse (can you be a "fan" if the show hasn't debuted yet?) have already started a "Save Our Show" campaign, because they fear that FOX will cancel the show quickly, like they did another Whedon show, Firefly.

The Arrested Development Award: Call for considerations

tv squad awardsThe TV Squad Awards are in full swing, and I have the pleasure of moderating The Arrested Development Award, a.k.a. The Show Least Deserving of Cancellation Award.

Since we're focusing on shows from the 2007-2008 season, that lets out a few contenders, like Veronica Mars , Firefly, and the award's namesake, Arrested Development. But there are plenty of recent shows deserving of the honor. Five that made my list:

1. Journeyman (NBC). This time-shift puzzle starring Kevin McKidd as deer-in-the-headlights Dan Vasser took a while to hook me, but by mid-season, I was there. I love shows that make you think, and although this one developed a formula (Dan saving someone who would later go on to change history), the logistics always had you scratching your head. I was sad to see it absent from NBC's Fall 08 schedule.

Sail away with Veronica Mars fans

veronica mars castYou miss Veronica Mars. We all do. But maybe you miss it just a little more than I do. Maybe your eyes well up with tears whenever you see Jason Dohring on a promo for Moonlight because you know he's not a vampire. He's Logan Echolls, dammit!

If that is you, there are kindred spirits out there, my friend. Spirits who miss the brilliant-but-canceled series so much that they're willing to cram onto a cruise ship together and reminisce about Neptune and its inhabitants. From the people who created the Browncoat Cruise 2007, this summer's offering is Cruise to Mars 2008. Yes, it's a real thing!

Dollhouse plot details revealed

Joss WhedonI am a true whore for any Whedon universe. I thank the Powers That Be for DVD releases, so I don't have to mourn over the loss of Buffy, Angel and Firefly. Heck, I even watch Toy Story and salivate just a little.

So you can imagine how excited I am that Joss will have a new series, Dollhouse, and that glorious new details have been revealed about the series this week.

Earlier today Bob mentioned that Amy Acker (Fred / Ilyria on Angel) will join Eliza Dushku (Buffy's Faith) and Harry Lennix (24 and The Matrix). So far, an amazing lineup. The fact that I get to see some of my old Whedon universe friends back with Joss' work is very cool.

Firefly's Alan Tudyk coming back to TV

alan tudyk; fireflyLet me start this out with a big WAHOO! Alan Tudyk, who played the endearing character of 'Wash' on Firefly, may be returning to television as early as this fall.

He has been cast in a starring role for an ABC comedy that, as of yet, does not have a title. The show is being created by Max Mutchick and David Kohan, the creative team behind long-running sitcom Will & Grace. Their new show (which we've mentioned in the past) is about two writers, one gay and one straight, who are in business together. Tudyk will play the gay writer, named Charlie (according to his IMDB profile).

Firefly may get special edition box set

firefly logoJewel Staite revealed some information that may have all you Browncoats making room on your shelf for another box set of Joss Whedon's brilliant-but-canceled Firefly. Staite, you all remember, played sweet Kaylee on that short-lived series.

At a convention in Australia two weeks ago, Staite mentioned that she may be headed to Los Angeles to do some commentary for a special box set of Firefly. Here's what she said:

"I just heard that they're re-releasing Firefly, a special edition of Firefly in a box set. They actually asked me if I was able to come down to L.A. and do commentary in the spring at some point. So I think that would be fun."

TV in comics update: Buffy, Angel, The Stranded and Serenity

buffy comicIt's been a while since my last review of a Buffy season eight comic, and since then there's been other developments in the TV-on-comics front (we should have a category for that). Rather than dedicate separate posts to this news, I'll round everything up here, at least this time around.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - season eight - Issues #10 & #11
These were stand-alone "episodes," unlike 'The Long Way Home' and 'No Future for You'. A few things are revealed here that help keep the Big Bad of this season in play. Willow has even more power than we could have realized in past seasons, and an unexpected person has a crush on Buffy. I really liked 'A Beautiful Sunset' (#11) more than any other issue, with a great moment where one of the main, masked antagonists is almost revealed. Classic Joss writing.

A new multi-part series kicks off March 5, written by veteran Drew Goddard.

TV continues uninterrupted in comic books

BSG ComicWhat are you going to do? The Office, How I Met Your Mother, and even new shows like Pushing Daisies and Chuck are either out of fresh episodes or quickly running out. Well, you don't need to spend the "strike season" curled up in the corner of your bedroom crying through a pile of TV Guides, remembering the good old days when you didn't already know what was going to happen this week on House.

Television is alive and well, and even growing ... just somewhere else. Want to know what happened to Jack Bauer before Season One of 24? How about Buffy and the Scooby Gang after the series finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer? More and more shows are expanding their horizons by telling prequels, sequels and even in-between-quels in comic books, or graphic novels.

Stargate Atlantis: Travelers

jill wagner and joe flanigan - stargate: atlantis
(S04E05) The folks over at Stargate HQ are having a good week. First, Atlantis gets picked up for a twenty episode season five, and then they finish it off by heading into their weekend with another very good episode. It was, for the most part, another stand-alone offering, but we did get some hints at a couple things in the future. If that wasn't enough for you, they also had the good sense to hire Jill Wagner for a guest spot. My TV is better with more Jill Wagner on it.

Hey sci-fi fans, do you have an extra $900?

X-Files setSo let's say you had an extra $900 lying around and you really loved science fiction shows. What DVDs would you buy?

Amazon is making your decision a little bit easier for you. They have a special bundle for sale, nine different FOX/MGM shows at 49% off. OK, it's still a little pricey at $900 (you could probably put that money toward your rent), but look at what you get: the Buffy, The Vampire Slayer Collector's Set, The Angel Collector's Set, The X-Files Ultimate Collection, all ten Stargate: SG-1 seasons and all three Stargate Atlantis seasons, all four seasons of The Pretender (plus the movies), all three seasons of Roswell, both seasons of Dark Angel, and Firefly: The Complete Series. Holy crap!

Keyspan releases $50 RF remote for Vista Media Center

Keyspan RF remote for Windows VistaKeyspan's new RF remote for Windows Vista Media Center has all your usual play, pause, and fast-forward style features. It's even got the signature green button in the middle.

But there's one thing that's missing. A huge price tag. It seems like every day a new company is releasing a remote control that's more powerful than your computer, and costs more to boot.

The Keyspan remote might not be as cheap as the universal remote you can pick up for your TV/VCR/DVD player at the local Radio Shack. But at $50, it's a pretty solid looking device. Since it's an RF remote, you can control your media center from up to 90 feet away without a direct line of sight.

Unlike Snapstream Media's similarly priced Firefly RF remote control, which is designed to work with BeyondTV, Keyspan's remote is made for Windows Media Center. That means you won't have to install any software to use it.

Mark Sheppard joins the cast of Bionic Woman

mark sheppardGood news everyone. TV Squad reader Kim points us to a myspace entry from Mark Sheppard revealing that he has just been added to the cast of Bionic Woman, as a series regular. I say it's good news because Sheppard is one of those actors that has been great in short lived roles on a number of shows, but never had that one big role. This has the potential to be his breakout.

Many people will recognize him from his role as Badger on Firefly, or his recent run on Battlestar Galactica as Romo Lampkin. In case you missed it though, one of my favorite Sheppard characters is his semi-recurring gig (one episode each season) on Medium as Dr. Charles Walker/Jack Walker. He also had a nice six episode run on day 5 of 24. Along with those more notable roles, his credits include one or two episode stints on another 20-odd shows. With this news, The Bionic Woman has vaulted to the top of my must-see list for the fall.
