(S05E01) Despite Bravo's ridiculously shoddy half-attempts to advertise the new season and my sour disappointment in the last group designers, I tuned in for a fifth go at
Project Runway. Fingers crossed that I don't hate the world when this is all over.
Before we jump into the episode itself, I must rant. Yes, "must". As we all know,
Runway is moving from
Bravo to Lifetime after this season. I don't believe this is a smart move for the show, and it looks like Bravo is pretty annoyed about it too. Instead of overloading the media with promotional material weeks and weeks in advance to get hype in the system like they usually do, they didn't release designer bios and photos until days before the premiere. Plus, they've posted a full episode guide online, revealing all the guest judges. The season is barely off the ground and Bravo is insanely bitter that
Runway isn't its baby anymore.

Unless that little ad I saw during
Top Chef was a total lie,
Project Runway's fifth season will be starting Wednesday, July 16 at 9:00 (new time). I definitely was not expecting the new round to start this early. It feels like the painful fourth season ended only three months ago because, umm, it did. It worries me when competition shows seem a little too eager to pick the next hottest thing. Let the old hottest thing bask in the limelight for a little while! I really hope
PR doesn't turn into a non-stop barrage of half-talent the way that
American Idol has, popping out new seasons like they're Danielle Steel novels and not allowing the talent pool to grow.

Ever since Season Three, I have been feeling a bit nervous about
Project Runway. I didn't feel as strongly about the talent and I found myself becoming increasingly frustrated with the decisions and challenges in each episode. Of course, like any other lover of arty TV and sucker for punishment, I kept watching and even made it all the way through the travesty known as Season Four.

Hey, boys. I know it took, like, two whole seasons before you became comfortable enough with your masculinity to admit enjoying
Project Runway and start watching the show with your lady-friends. It's really great that you were open-minded enough to spend a night every week with Bravo, NBC's flamboyant cousin. Anyway, about that...
Project Runway is leaving
Bravo for Lifetime. Secret
Runway fans need come out now, because "Oh! I thought tonight was
Top Chef! I guess I'll just watch this anyway..." isn't going to cut it anymore, because the only other options on Lifetime are Meredith Baxter TV movies and
Your Mama Don't Dance.

Tim Gunn of
Project Runway fame attended the Baltimore Book Festival on Sunday to promote his
new book and Bravo show,
Tim Gunn's Guide to Style. I was lucky enough to get pretty good seat before the rest of the crazed crowd consumed the tiny tent. Again, this was a book festival, but it would have been silly to think that the discussion wouldn't stray into television territory. Gunn briefly spoke about his new show and the history of its creation (Bravo wanted to do a show with him but had no ideas, Gunn came out with the book, Bravo found out and turned the book into a show about bettering women, not "make-overs"). Then, naturally, the topic of
Project Runway came up and took over the rest of the Q&A. Gunn shared some sweet information on past seasons and the upcoming fourth cycle, premiering November 14th.

While waiting for
What Not To Wear on Friday night, I caught the premiere of TLC's
I've Got Nothing to Wear. It's the show in which three up-and-coming designers take various items from a -- let's just say it -- victim's wardrobe and cut and mix and match and sew everything into new garments. The concept sounded fantastic, especially to the artsy-fartsy types like me who love the DIY approach to fashion and enjoy cutting up old raincoats into evening wear or something.
So what's the problem?

I'm very pleased to share the news that Tim Gunn has signed a deal with Bravo to bring his fashion expertise to his very own makeover show. The program will be based around his upcoming book,
Tim Gunn: A Guide to Quality, Taste & Style (set for May release). Gunn has promised to use the program to re-define "makeovers", which sounds like a pretty bold statement to make. But, then again, this is the all-mighty Tim Gunn. I have no reason to doubt the man. All hail Tim Gunn.
While this is all lovely, I can't help but feel a wee bit bad that this announcement was made just as Bravo
canceled their hit makeover program Queer Eye for the Straight Guy (which was fantastic, but eventually exhausted). Looks like Gunn has to fill five very flamboyant shoes as Bravo's new makeover guy.
Gunn's presence in the next season of
Project Runway still has
yet to be confirmed, but at least we know that the worst case scenario will be that he'll only be on one program, not two.

According to
People, Tim Gunn may not return for the fourth season of
Project Runway. Please, allow me to repeat myself: Tim Gunn -- the only voice of reason among a sea of poorly-dressed crazies -- may not return for the fourth season of
Project Runway. See, the show has always filmed at the end of the academic semester, so Tim, an instructor at Parsons, would not have any schedule conflicts. This may not be the case any more.

NPR asked a few designers from various seasons of
Project Runway to complete one more challenge and sketch some ideas for cool Halloween costumes. Diana Eng, Daniel Vosovic, Nick Verreros, Wendy Pepper, Nora Caliguri, Katherine Gerdes, and Starr Ilzhoefer pitched some sketches and, well, I thought they were
okay (yes, I'm going to pretend it was an actual episode and critique a few things because, now that the season's over, I. Am. In. Withdrawal). I liked Diana's lightning bug idea, and Katherine's iPod costume would be fantastic for a parent and child... but what was up with Nick's
Pirates of the Caribbean costumes? Generic pirate and princess. Not Captain Jack and Elizabeth. Tsk tsk, Nick.
I choose to Auf... Wendy Pepper. Not because her witch costume was crappy, but because I'm still pissed that she robbed Austin Scarlett of the final Bryant Park spot (ooh, I'm so bitter). Anyway, check out
the costumes for yourself.

(S03E14) After minimal drama (drama that totally didn't live up to the previews), Jeffrey's outsourcing scandal was over and he was let off the hook. However, he was slightly over-budget, so he had to cut the blonde wigs out of his collection. I honestly thought the wigs would have negatively impacted his presentation, so it was probably lucky for him that he had to take away a couple hundred from his budget.

(S03E13) Damn it. Why must they tease us? This episode had nothing.
Nothing. They should have just made tonight a two-hour special, declared the winner, and put us out of our anxious, hand-wringing misery.
But no. We have to wait until next week to find out the Season Three winner.
We didn't even get to the bottom of the Laura/Jeffrey scandal (which wasn't as exciting as I hoped)! It's a double-cliffhanger, folks, the very worst kind of cliffhanger.

(S03E12) Another season, another reunion episode that attempts to re-ignite flames from drowned embers. Could they have been
any more desperate to start shit again? Seriously. Heidi and Tim were practically begging for Keith to have an embarrassing freak-out... for Angela and Jeffrey to throttle each other's throats... for Malan to get really self-conscious about his funny little laugh and shoot somebody in the face. (Un)Fortunately, none of that happened. There was a wee bit of heated discussion, but I didn't think it really lived up to the drama the previews promised.

(S03E08) There was a bit of a mix-up last week, so I'm sorry that you all couldn't come here to vent your frustrations about the previous episode. Boy, oh boy, never has an episode called for so much venting. Vincent thew a basic black dress in with massive beige lapels... and
won. The lapels were straight out of the 80s and clown-ish. If the lapels weren't so floppy, I would have liked it a little more. I think he only won because just about everyone else failed to flatter their plus-sized models. So, Robert was booted for being boring again, Vincent won, and Satan roared with laughter as he landed his triple axel jump.

(S03E06) After Heidi told the designers that they've had it relatively easy all season, she sent them to Newark, New Jersey to learn about their new, tougher challenge. There, Tim presented them with several massive mounds of mylar and peanut bags and paper. The designers were challenged to create an outfit out of three bins' worth of this recyclable material. Plus, they had a budget of only $25 (limited to only art supplies) and had to finish it by midnight that night (instead of their normal two days). Crunch time!

Bravo has
officially decided to start airing the third season of
Project Runway this summer in order to use September's Fall Fashion Week for the finale (where the three finalists -- and one other designer who's just there to throw off spectators and will not be aired -- compete with collections instead of individual garments). An hour-long casting special will air July 12 at 9PM ET/PT, with the first episode premiering at 10PM.
If you've never seen the program before, I suggest you jump on the bandwagon with the first episode. It really is the classiest reality show on television.
[Thanks, orimental!]
