After the executive session, it was CBS News' turn to face the critics and talk about their election coverage. Via satellite from their New York studios was
CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric,
Face the Nation moderator Bob Schieffer, senior political correspondent Jeff Greenfield, and CBS News and Sports president Sean McManus.
Right away, a reporter brought up Katie Couric's job status. "I'm glad you got right to it," Couric joked. "I thought [the speculation] had died down considerably." She said she "can't control what media writers write. We live in an echo chamber," with media reporters more fascinated by her status than the general public is. "The attention befuddles me," she continued. She's concentrating on doing "the best job I can."

For once the info coming from CBS News is not about whether
Katie Couric's job is in jeopardy.
Face the Nation host Bob Schieffer has decided not to retire after all; he's staying with CBS News indefinitely.
The veteran newsman, who'll be 72 this year, had announced his retirement. He was going to leave the Black Rock as of the January presidential inauguration. Now he's decided to postpone the rocking chair. According to
TV Week, the network didn't have to twist his arm; the deal was easily and simply done. All Schieffer had to do was get his wife Pat's approval and he was able to tell CBS News and Sports President Sean McManus asked him not to step down as planned with the inauguration of a new president that he would remain.

New CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric doesn't start til next Tuesday, but anchor Bob Schieffer's last show is tonight at 6:30pm ET. Must be taking some time off for the Labor Day weekend.
Schieffer isn't leaving CBS, of course. He will still continue to host the long-running Sunday morning news show Face The Nation.

CBS has
asked current anchor Bob Schieffer to
stay on the
CBS Evening News as a commentator when Katie Couric takes over in the fall. Two commenatries a
week, to be exact.
Schieffer says he'll decide over the summer. He's not sure if he wants to do another
commentary during the week, because he already does one on
Face The Nation every Sunday. My guess? He'll do
them. I think that he's a great presence on the show, and gives the show some old-time newsman gravitas.
On
a side note, will Couric stay "Katie" when she takes over in September, or will she switch to
"Kate" or "Katherine"? She'll probably stay Katie, because any worry about the name sounding too
cute or young went away many years ago, and if she changed it now it would just seem kinda silly.

The "liberal bias" of the media we hear so much about was called into
question recently with a study released by Media Matters which claims that Sunday morning political shows such as
Meet the Press, Face the Nation, and This Week tend to have more conservative
guests than liberal. Of course, some are arguing against the study. NBC argued that during Clinton's term in
office there were also slightly more Republican guests on Meet the Press. The point, I suppose, is that it's
not necessarily dictated by who's in office. Also, there's the question as to who's really conservative and who isn't,
especially when it comes to centrists like John McCain and others. My advice? Tune into The McLaughlin Group,
a show where everyone is equally a raving lunatic, no matter their political affiliation. Or, go to the zoo and watch
spider monkeys fighting each other. It's pretty much the same either way.
