What You Missed Last Night: Chelsea Handler explains why she called in sick

For the first time ever, Chelsea Handler called in sick the other night. On last night's show she came in to explain what happened (and infect everyone on her staff, apparently). She gets in a funny jab at her older boyfriend too.

Oddly, even though Handler is getting over a sickness she sounds clearer than she usually does.

What You Missed Last Night: Jay Leno vs. Chelsea Handler

A gossip quiz wasn't the only thing that Jay Leno and Chelsea Handler battled about last night. Leno also teased her about the age difference between her and boyfriend Ted Harbert (the E! chief - I guess they got back together?), Handler insulted Leno by comparing him to another talk show host, and then Leno showed the new Playboy that features Handler on the cover.

After the jump, Leno and Handler continue the battle.

What You Missed Last Night: Chelsea Handler ticked off at Neil Patrick Harris

During his Emmy hosting duties the other night, Neil Patrick Harris sang an opening number that included the names of many TV networks. Not just the major ones but also several cable outlets. There's one particular network he forgot to mention though, and last night Chelsea Handler talked about it.

It's really great to work at Chelsea Lately

You get two different things in this clip from Chelsea Lately. In the first half, Chelsea Handler dumps on the people from a VH1 reality show (I think she says Real Enchant though I'm not sure - maybe she means Real Chance of Love?) who filmed an episode at her show, and in the second half she shows what life is like for the staff at the late night E! show. It involves massages and free babies! (Probably NSFW.)

Side note: Handler looks different. Not just the clothes that make her look like a waiter, but her hairstyle. She looks like another celebrity and I can't think of which one.

Mad Men debuts huge, but almost gets beat by a couple of Kardashians

Mad Men (top) / Kourtney & Khloe Take MiamiSometimes ratings can paint such interesting portraits of the American audience. Mad Men set a series high and ranked as the top show on cable Sunday with its third season premiere. And yet, its victory on the night was only 0.1 million viewers over the premiere of E!s Kourtney & Khloe Take Miami.

Those K&K numbers make it the new highest premiere on E! since The Anna Nicole Show premiered. A record briefly held by Kendra's premiere earlier this summer.

So one the one hand we have one of the most deservedly acclaimed television shows of the past decade, and right there with it, running neck and neck, is yet another reality spin-off featuring rich people who are only famous because ... they're famous. I blame Paris Hilton. She was one of the first people who got famous for doing absolutely nothing.

Chelsea Handler talks about Real Housewives, long breasts, and three-way parasailing

I love these little mini-essay rants that Chelsea Handler does. It makes me want to watch her show, though I always always always forget that it's on and always miss it. Here she talks about how one of the Chelsea Lately panelists, Heather McDonald, is obsessed with the Real Housewives shows on Bravo. (Video also here.)

Oh, like 92% of everything Handler talks about, this is NSFW.

Three montages about Michael Jackson

This clip from The Soup will bring a smile to the face of every reader who thinks that TV coverage of Michael Jackson has gone too far. I guess that would be all readers. Joel McHale introduces montages about how the gossip shows and news channels reveal too much info about his death, wonder where his body is, and speculate wildly. The funeral is tomorrow, so we can imagine what coverage is still to come. (Video also here.)

TV's Joel McHale riffing with Rifftrax on Red Dawn

Joel McHale, star of The Soup and CommunityActor, comedian and classically trained suit wearer Joel McHale has taken his talent for riffing to the next level.

The star of The Soup and the upcoming NBC sitcom Community has joined forces with Michael J. Nelson's Rifftrax.com to provide a running comedy commentary for the perennial craptastic 80s classic Red Dawn. Nelson announced the guest commentary on the Rifftrax site and his Twitter blog earlier this week.

Rifftrax, for those who may not be familiar with the site and are therefore in no way cool, is the comedy website that provides downloadable MP3s of funny movie commentaries featuring the voices and talents of the minds behind Mystery Science Theater 3000 including Nelson, Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy. It is the only reason I still own all three Matrix films, that and the fact that my desk is missing part of a leg.

Chelsea Handler apologizes to Costa Rica (for I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here)

Chelsea Handler doesn't hold back, eh? In this clip she tackles NBC's I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here (which I've been spelling as "outta here" the past several days, but who cares?). I love the new word she unveils to the world: "celebri-dicks."

I'm starting to think The Soup is one of the most important shows on TV

The Soup is good food for a TV fan who doesn't want to watch reality shows but does want to see the most horrible moments from them so our decision not to watch them is justified. The clip below is "Condensed Soup," where host Joel McHale gives a quick wrap-up of what's happening on shows like The Bachelorette, Here Come The Newlyweds, and Re-Inventing Bonaduce (a show I didn't even know existed). (Video also here.)

Alex O'Loughlin talks about Three Rivers (and Moonlight!)

This E! interview with Alex O'Loughlin was recorded at the recent CBS upfront, so he talks a lot about his new medical drama Three Rivers. But the heck with that; he also talks a lot about Moonlight! He misses the show and is glad that The Sci-Fi Channel (sorry, SyFy) is showing it again.

But seriously, fans, the show is not coming back. Sorry!

At The Movies host to also host new version of GUTS

Ben LyonsI know what you're thinking: Roger Ebert is going to host a kid's game show? That's what he's going to do for his return to weekly television? Nah, it's not Roger. And it's not co-host Richard Roeper either. Both are leaving the syndicated movie review show.

It's actually Ben Lyons, son of movie critic Jeffrey Lyons and one of the replacements for Ebert & Roeper (along with Ben Mankiewicz). Lyons is going to host an updated version of the classic Nickelodeon game show GUTS. It will now be called My Family's Got GUTS. Because just GUTS would have sounded stupid?
