In her Oscar-winning movie
Funny Girl,
Barbra Streisand as Fanny Brice described herself as "a bagel on a plateful of onion rolls." Last night, CBS served up the Barbra bagel in the
one-hour TV special Streisand Live 2006. As music specials go it was a delicious serving of all-time great hits like "Somewhere," "Evergreen," "The Way We Were" and "Don't Rain on My Parade." But at just an hour -- probably 48 minutes considering the commercials -- the show just wasn't enough. It was a smidge of Streisand. I wanted the whole thing.
From a marketing point of view, this was probably just what the Streisand camp wanted. On Tuesday, April 28, Sony is releasing a 3-DVD set of Barbra TV concerts, including the full, two-hour-plus version of
Streisand Live 2006. So in many ways, the CBS special was an extended preview, an infomercial, a nibble that would make you want to buy the DVD.

Judging by the
Nielsen ratings Lifetime is raking in for Army Wives in its second season, this show has found its audience. It actually started last spring when
Army Wives was a national surprise -- to everyone in the business outside of Lifetime, which picked up the show when ABC passed.
It's still amazing to think that ABC had a chance to put this show in their schedule and let it get away. Their loss is Lifetime's gain -- and they're feasting on it.
If you missed the first season of
Army Wives, and didn't get into the show until the fifth episode -- like me -- then you'll be glad to know that
Army Wives: The Complete First Season is now available on DVD. It's a great set, too, with some very nice bonus features and quality commentaries.

"Reserve lots of money for Christmas, 2008."
That's the word from HBO Home Video head Henry McGee, speaking at the DVD and Beyond industry conference. He's talking about a Sopranos complete set. TVShowsOnDVD.com verified the info with McGee, and says it will be an expensive set. Though I wonder what they mean by expensive, since TV fans are used to paying $150-300 for complete sets.
Maybe the set will have commentary by David Chase on that series finale, or maybe deleted scenes or other info that will give more closure (for you fans who need that). Or maybe they'll be more of that black scene, which Chase wanted to last 20 seconds longer than it did (HBO talked him out of it).

Mystery Science Theater 3000 is, without a doubt, my favorite television series ever. It's also a show that owes some debt to its fans. It premiered on Comedy Central (actually, it debuted when "Comedy Central" was still called "The Comedy Channel") when that network was still drifting unnoticed through the cable landscape. It was fans who recorded every episode and sent them around that helped to spread word of the show and keep it on the air for ten years, which isn't too shabby for a weird little puppet show shot in Minneapolis. While securing rights to all the movies riffed on the show makes it impossible for full seasons to be released, Rhino has been doing a great job puting together "best of" sets of the series, and the tenth volume comes out on August 29. Episodes will include
Godzilla vs. Megalon;
Swamp Diamonds;
The Giant Spider Invaision; and
Teenage Strangler. The set will also include songs and outtakes. Information comes from
MST3k Info.
