Steven Moffat takes over Doctor Who

Steven MoffatSince Doctor Who found new life in 2005, Russell T. Davies has served as both executive producer and head writer of the series. Davies had announced that he would be stepping down from the position, and today, we learned the not-so-surprising news that occasional Doctor Who writer and creator of Coupling, Steven Moffat, will be taking over.

This is definitely a step in the right direction for the series, as Moffat's previous contributions to the show have been some of the greatest highlights. For example, that chilling episode "Blink" (the one that made it impossible for me to walk through a sculpture garden without looking over my shoulder every two seconds) was his masterpiece.

The Doctor's new companion

Doctor Who and MarthaNewcomer Freema Agyeman has been chosen to play Doctor Who's new companion, Martha Jones, in the upcoming season. She already played a different character in the current season, but executive producer and writer Russell T. Davies liked her so much that she was brought in to audition again. Hopefully, Billie Piper haters can watch the program with a little more ease now.

Here's the BBC press release, but it contains a spoiler if you don't know what happens to Freema's first character, Adeola. And here's a gallery with a couple more pictures of David Tennant and Freema.

Get a lesson in Doctor Who

doctor whoI know, it's tough. You've been wanting to watch Doctor Who for a long time now, but you figure it's pointless to try and get into a show that's been on for as long as this one has. Or maybe you're like me and just never cared about Doctor Who in the first place because you got into other shows like Carpenter What and Janitor How. Or maybe you just like to make up really lame jokes that play on the name "Doctor Who." That's not important, though. What is important is that the BBC has a Flash site where you can poke around and learn about the series, different episodes, characters, and other things to get you up to speed. There's a long history, but if you're interested in the show, it's worth checking out.

To go where no comic book has gone before

comic bookI have no idea what the story is behind these, but they're really interesting, nonetheless. They're comics based on old TV shows, which I assume were created as promotions for the television shows themselves. The Cartoonist has a few scans for your viewing pleasure featuring comic book versions of Star Trek and Dr. Who, among others. Oddly enough, while they created these comic books for science fiction programs like Star Trek and Dr. Who, they never made a comic based on Meet the Press. All I'm saying is that Roger Mudd shooting aliens with a laser would have been really cool.

Doctor Who is coming to America

Doctor WhoThe Sci-Fi Channel has always treated me well by managing to air zombie flicks right when I'm in a Romero mood and having a show about plumber-by-day ghostbusters (so what if I like Ghost Hunters?). And now, my dear, dear Sci-Fi Channel is going to start airing Doctor Who. Flippin' sweet indeed. Starting in March, the channel will begin airing the Christopher Eccleston (9th Doctor) version of the cult classic. Not much news on whether or not they'll air the David Tennant (latest) version yet but, according to the article, the channel has an "option". I'm assuming they'll gauge the response to the Eccleston version before deciding on anything else? Well, no matter because, finally, the Doctor is coming! Woooo-Who! Alright, that's enough out of me. I'll shut up now before I make some dated "Exterminate!" jokes.
