This is a bummer. (By the way, isn't there a better expression than that to describe disappointment? "What a shame" is just too British to me.) Anyway,
TV Guide's Michael Ausiello reports that Law & Order: SVU has lost Diane Neal. The actress, who's played assistant district attorney Casey Novak on the Dick Wolf show for five years has turned in her resignation. This season will be her last. "Diane spent five years on
SVU and was a tremendous addition to the
SVU team. She is looking forward to new opportunities and she will be missed," says the NBC source about her departure.
Like I said, I'm not happy about this one. Unlike so many of the faces and forms that come in and out of the
L&O universe, Diane Neal stuck out. And I mean that in a good way. She had a presence and a passion, which was not only recognizable amid the many others who seem interchangeable, it was crucial to match fire with Christopher Meloni, Mariska Hargitay and the other
SVU cast.

NBC's got
a lot of new shows this fall. The panels have been non-stop and swag-free today -- and not without a bit of controversy.
First up was
Law & Order creator Dick Wolf and new
Law & Order cast members Alicia Witt (
CI), Adam Beach
(SVU), and Jeremy Sisto
(Law & Order).
Sisto's character on
L&O comes with emotional baggage that makes the angst he carried around as Rachel Griffith's brother on
Six Feet Under seem like a birthday party, which is interesting since Wolf is no fan of serial drama.

According to the entertainment reporter over at
Fox News, actor Bradley Whitford "almost" got the role as the new Assistant District Attorney on
Law & Order. Sam Waterston is
vacating that position to play the District Attorney, now that actor Fred Thompson is
leaving the show to run for president.
Everybody got that? Good.

Sam Waterston wants a promotion. For the last 13 years Waterston has played Assistant District Attorney Jack McCoy on the long-running (some say too long) NBC drama Law & Order. Now that co-star, and former U.S. Senator, Fred Thompson (who played District Attorney Arthur Branch) is leaving the show to run for president of the United States his job position is now open. And, it seems that Waterston's McCoy wants to move into the slot.
According to an anonymous source close to the show, Waterston is negotiating to have his character step into the D.A. role when Law & Order returns at the beginning of 2008. How McCoy would slip into the position, as well as his replacement, have yet to be determined. When asked to confirm this news L&O creator Dick Wolf as well as Waterston declined to comment.

Jeremy Sisto will replace Milena Govich as a detective on the original version of
Law & Order. Sisto was on NBC last season in the failed series,
Kidnapped, and is perhaps best known for his role as Brenda's crazy brother, Billy, on
Six Feet Under.I'm not sure how they're going to write his character into the show, considering the actor guest-starred on the season finale last month as a defense attorney. I didn't see that episode (apparently my Jeremy Sisto radar was turned off) so I don't know if he had any sort of background as a detective, or if
L&O will just ignore the fact that he guest-starred and recast him as a detective by a different name.
It's a bittersweet announcement, really. Jeremy Sisto is a terrific (and super hot) actor, yet he has taken a role on a show that has dropped in the ratings and
almost wasn't renewed this season.

A lot of people thought that one or both of the NBC shows Law and Order and Law and Order: Criminal Intent would be on the cancellation list when NBC presents its upfront tomorrow, but the network has surprised many fans by renewing both shows.
There is a little twist when it comes to Law and Order: CI though. The show will actually first run the new episodes of the season on USA and then NBC will run repeats.
Law and Order is a straight renewal though. The show will head into its 18th season of shows "ripped from the headlines!" As far as Law and Order: SVU goes, most expect that to be renewed with no problem. We'll have full coverage of the network upfronts all this week, starting with NBC on Monday.

There are all sorts of
media reports swirling around lately that NBC is considering canceling
Law & Order and
Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Both series are suffering from consistently low ratings and it wasn't a good sign earlier this year when NBC moved the original
Law & Order to
Siberia Friday nights. NBC reportedly met with
L&O creator Dick Wolf earlier this week to discuss the series' futures, and both are considered "on the bubble", though
Criminal Intent is more likely to see a renewal than the original
Law & Order. A decision isn't expected until early next month. (
SVU is safe, by the way, with its stars earning
mega bucks next season)
This is the original
Law & Order's 17th season and, even though it has reached legendary status as far as television series go, it is time for it to go. I think the
Chevy Chase episode proved that. It feels tired and stale. There are way too many "ripped from the headlines" episodes and can anyone even keep track of who the main detectives are anymore? The series has gone through so many stars that it's getting hard to keep up. Plus, I think it became about "sexy" detectives and lawyers, rather than the original, more gritty characters played by Chris Noth, Paul Sorvino, Michael Moriarty, and Jerry Orbach.

Law and Order creator Dick Wolf and NBC Universal have snatched up the rights to the book The Brotherhoods: The True Story of Two Cops Who Murdered for the Mafia. The book tells the true story of two New York City copes, Stephen Caracappa and Louis Eppolito, who secretly worked as murderers for the mafia. The book was written by William Oldham and Guy Lawson. Oldham worked for the NYPD alongside Caracappa, but didn't find out about his partners secret life until later. He launched an investigation, despite very little help from the NYPD, and both Caracappa and Eppolito were eventually arrested.
The book will be developed into a television project produced by Wolf and Tom Thayer, though whether it will be another Law and Order series or something else entirely isn't known just yet, according to Variety. Meanwhile, several movie deals are also being worked out to bring the story to the bigscreen.

Jonathan
posted news recently that J.J. Abrams is in talks with HBO to direct and produce a show through his Bad Robot Productions. That's all well and good, but let's play junior programming executive for a moment. How would you feel about buying a show from Bad Robot, given their history.
Are you making a deal with the brilliant team behind the top 20 hit Lost? And does the fact that we have now switched that qualifier from top 5, to top 10, to top 20 cause any concern? Or are you making a deal with the team that so bungled Alias that by the end of the run it was almost an act of charity for ABC to even air the show? Seriously. May 17th, 2006, Alias is the #5 show in its time slot behind Deal Or No Deal (NBC), Bones (Fox), The Amazing Race (CBS), AND Next Top Model (UPN), only managing to beat out the movie Final Destination 2 (WB).

Dick Wolf, who has brought NBC success with various versions of the
Law & Order franchise, has two comedy scripts lined up for NBC. One is a single-camera comedy about a fumbling U.S. Congressman and the staff that try to handle him. The other is a medical sitcom about ER docs and paramedics. I think I've seen both of these shows before, they were called
Spin City and
Scrubs. Right now, neither show has a title.
I'd be interested to see what Dick Wolf's sense of humor is like. The man's entire resume is made up of crime dramas.

For 2007, it looks as though the Hollywood Walk of Fame is going retro! This year's recipients in television have been busting their chops for decades. Former
C.H.i.P.S star (and current reality television fodder) Erik Estrada is getting one. So are Jerry Stiller, Kiefer Sutherland, Barbara Walters, and
Law & Order creator Dick Wolf. There were more than 200 nominees (also in movies, recording & theater) and the committee in charge of Hollywood immortality chose 23 stars.
Other recipients include P. Diddy (or whatever they're calling him now), Matt Damon, Jamie Foxx, Michelle Pfeiffer, Shania Twain, Lily Tomlin, and Crystal Gayle. The full list is
here.

I think one of our readers made a joke about this in the comments, but now TV critic Alan Sepinwall
suggests (perhaps jokingly, perhaps not) that since Leblanc is now out of a job, maybe he should be hired for
Law and Order.
"Hey, McCoy...how you doin?"
That's just one of the many casting suggestions that Sepinwall makes in the wake of departures from Dennis Farina and Annie Parisse. How about Mickey Rourke, or Don Johnson, or maybe even Mario Lopez or Geena Davis?
Come on readers, you know you want to make suggestions of your own...

After two seasons, Dennis Farina is
leaving his role as Detective Joe Fontana on the long-running NBC hit
Law and Order. He's going to pursue other projects and work on his production company.
This is probably a good move for Farina. He's a good actor (he's one of those actors who is good in everything he's in, even if what he's in isn't that good), but
Law and Order wasn't the best showcase for him. It's not exactly a show that leaves room for meaty acting or character development. It's all about the crime, the investigation, and the trial, and there's no room for anything else really. Besides, the show has really gone downhill, with all the "ripped from the headlines" cases.
No word yet on who will replace him.

(S01E11) Didn't Stephanie March have shorter hair last week?
This week we have another instance of Nick Potter (Jordan Bridges) wrestling with his demons. He's trying to save a reformed gang member from jail and he goes over ADA Jessica Rossi's (Milena Govich) head to Bureau Chief Alexandra Cabot (March), who recommends a lesser sentence. I thought we got over Nick's psychological problems with his mugging last week, but this episode may be out of order. On a side note, we get to see very little of Rossi this week. Her only storyline is to establish that she's not a high-class gal because she doesn't know what 'Cocktail Attire' means or what Foie Gras is.
