Designer and architect Vern Yip is back for a third season of HGTV's Deserving Design. The series will continue to focus on people with touching stories who are in need of some renovation assistance. Stories of this season include a couple who has taken in over sixty foster children (they get a much-needed new family room), a young woman diagnose with advanced breast cancer who needs some design assistance with her condo, and an eco-conscious couple who are in need of Vern's expertise.
While waiting for What Not To Wear on Friday night, I caught the premiere of TLC's I've Got Nothing to Wear. It's the show in which three up-and-coming designers take various items from a -- let's just say it -- victim's wardrobe and cut and mix and match and sew everything into new garments. The concept sounded fantastic, especially to the artsy-fartsy types like me who love the DIY approach to fashion and enjoy cutting up old raincoats into evening wear or something.Continue reading Never lend your wardrobe to TLC's design prodigies
Hot on the heels of The Onion's list of title sequences that are perfectly meshed with their shows comes this story from the Christian Science Monitor, detailing what goes into creating the all-too-brief title sequences you see on today's shows. Believe it or not, there are still some shows that have title sequences, even though most of them are a minute or less. This article goes into detail about the creation of title sequences for two shows: the new David E. Kelley dramedy The Wedding Bells and Marc Cherry's hit Desperate Housewives.Continue reading The art of the title sequence - VIDEO
Let me just come right out and say it: Jeffrey Sebelia, winner of Project Runway Season Three, is making costumes for the Bratz movie. Is that really the glorious post-Runway life? The cocky persona that Sebelia took on all season certainly led me to expect him to spend his prize money and fame on jetsetting and more neck tattoos to decorate his massive, massive neck, but, as it turns out, he isn't doing as great as one might expect. Not only is he quite broke, but ... did I mention his post-Runway project is doing the Bratz film? I was quite furious with him when he was on the program, but this article has actually made me -- dare I say it -- sympathize. Maybe he should have taken the Jay McCarroll route and skipped the winning contract to do his own thing.
While this news probably won't affect the show one bit, Fleshbot has uncovered that Top Design judge and LA interior designer Kelly Wearstler was once known as Kelly Gallagher, September 1994's Playmate of the Month. Her stated ambition - to "own my own marvelous design and furnishings business." Way to achieve, Kelly.
Tomorrow night's episode of Ugly Betty will feature a dress designed by one of the show's viewers. Announced a few weeks back, the show held a design-a-dress contest in which viewers could submit sketches of a dress made entirely of office supplies. The winning bubble wrap, newspaper and paper clip confection was created by Ricardo Rodriguez of Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Ricardo was flown out to LA and attended the taping of "Derailed," the episode which will feature his design.Continue reading Ugly Betty's design contest winner announced
Do you love Stella, the odd little comedy trio featuring David Wain, Michael Showalter and Michael Ian Black? If so, you'll be interested to learn that the guys are looking for someone to design a logo for new Stella merchandise. It's time to get out your crayons and glitter and see what you can come up with. Just don't use anything from their Comedy Central series or any related promotional images, that's not allowed. You can submit as many times as you wish, as long as you get your entry in by February 16. The guys will vote on their favorite and announce the winner on February 23. More details can be found on Wain's MySpace blog and the Stella Merchandise MySpace page.
Ugly Betty is playing Project Runway with its design-inclined viewers. Between now and January 28th, you can submit a dress design to be used on an episode of the show. If you impress Betty's costume designer Eduardo Castro and the cast, you'll be flown out to watch a taping of the show featuring your design come to life. Of course, there's a catch. This design contest requires a little "Sister Maria tears down the curtains for playclothes" ingenuity.Continue reading Ugly Betty turns Project Runway with designer challenge
Queer Eye For The Straight Guy, the once hugely popular makeover show on Bravo, has been canceled by the network. The series will have one last season coming up (titled Queer Eye: The Final Season). Design guru Thom Felicia gets his own show on the Style Network later this year.
This isn't a big surprise. Not only had ratings been dropping the last couple of years but the "buzz" that this show once had vanished completely. Personally, I got sick of all the "theme" blocks of episodes they did, like when the went to other areas of the country or did weddings. Nothing bores me more than planning a wedding, which I'm sure will thrill my fiancee in the future.

Although Todd Oldham said, at the TCA panel for Bravo's Top Design this morning, "Copying is boring, but reinventing is quite interesting" ... which really doesn't explain why we have another reality show about home makeovers, ack! It's invasion of the paintbrush wielding contestants this time, with no end in sight.
(S03E12) Another season, another reunion episode that attempts to re-ignite flames from drowned embers. Could they have been any more desperate to start shit again? Seriously. Heidi and Tim were practically begging for Keith to have an embarrassing freak-out... for Angela and Jeffrey to throttle each other's throats... for Malan to get really self-conscious about his funny little laugh and shoot somebody in the face. (Un)Fortunately, none of that happened. There was a wee bit of heated discussion, but I didn't think it really lived up to the drama the previews promised.Continue reading Project Runway: Reunion
(S03E11) Final challenge before Fashion Week, kids. The heat is on!Continue reading Project Runway: What the ELLE?
(S03E10) Damn those Project Runway producers. Damn. Them. To. Hell. How dare they bring back Vincent and Angela?... In the same episode?! I almost threw up on myself, I was so furious. I thought my Runway-related anger was ready to retire, but I guess it was too soon. No. The producers just had to make my blood boil one more time and now I've learned not to trust them. I'm ready for absolutely anything now... Go on, producers. Do your worst. Bring Wendy Pepper back and stick her in the final challenge.Continue reading Project Runway: Black and White
