When you think of funny people in America, who do you immediately think of? Stephen Colbert? Robin Williams? Chris Rock? Matt Stone and Trey Parker? How about David Letterman or Dane Cook?
Some of the people above are on Entertainment Weekly's list of the 25 funniest people in America (two of the people above aren't on the list, nor should they be!). Some of the choices are downright baffling (as usual for these lists): Augustun Burroughs? Please. Diablo Cody? Good writer, but one of the funniest in the country based on Juno? But it's good to see the Sedarises on there (both David and Amy), as well as people like Tina Fey and Demetri Martin. There are even two current cast members of Saturday Night Live on the list. Can you guess who they are?
Once you read the list, you can go into the comments and say "why the hell is _________ on the list?!?"

"Bushman of Africa": President Bush recently paid a visit to five countries throughout Africa. He shared his learnings and experiences through
a slideshow, keeping it real old-school. Due to his initiatives on malaria, there will be a
George W. Bush Day to raise awareness. Was that a joke, Mr. President? I'll pretend it was.
Correspondent John Oliver stopped by to talk about this strange, new caring Bush and expressed his pain in seeing that Bush had it in him to do good all along. Whenever people bash The
Daily Show (or the C
olbert Report) for being really unfair to Bush, I like to point them to segments like this. Sure, they have a bit of a liberal bias, but they're not afraid to point out the blunders of the Democrats, nor do they shy away from recognizing when Republicans or conservatives have done well. Seriously, these two shows are probably more fair that many mainstream news outlets. Bless their snarky little hearts.

"
Clusterf@#k to the White House": Maria Shriver and some of the potential first ladies got together and basked in each other's powerful-by-association womanliness. Fact: Within five minutes of meeting each other, their views on universal healthcare synchronized... That was bad, I'm sorry. I tried. Another fact: Jon Stewart's Shriver impression sounds more like Arnold Schwarzenegger than his Arnold impression. It was while watching this segment when I realized who
Henry Waxman looks like. That tiny little man at the end of
The Triplets of Belleville. You know, the mousy mechanic/operator fellow? Yeah? No? Okay. Look it up.

Just a day after announcing that they were going to renew both Mind of Mencia and Lil' Bush, Comedy Central has announced that they have picked up a new comedy/variety show from comedian Demetri Martin.
The show will be produced by Jon Stewart and his Busboy Productions. Martin has been a regular contributor to The Daily Show. He also had two Comedy Central specials: one in 2004 as part of Comedy Central Presents and another this past January, Demetri Martin: Person, and a new comedy album These Are Jokes.
I've been waiting for this. Martin happens to be one of the funniest people on the planet. I think his style of humor lends itself perfectly to a weekly sketch show.. I'm sure he'll thrown in animation and observations too. After the jump, a couple of videos from Martin's work on The Daily Show and one of his specials.

Comedian and Daily Show trendspotter Demetri Martin appears in the new Fountains of Wayne video for their song "Someone to Love." Martin plays "Seth," a big city lawyer, which is fitting since he himself went to law school, although he did drop out one year before getting his degree.
The song, like all of Fountain of Wayne's songs, is really catchy and you'll probably find yourself singing it in the shower. Or, if you're like me, you'll actually learn how to play it on guitar so you can both sing and play it in the shower. This actually warps the guitar pretty bad, which is why I break into a music warehouse every night and steal a new one.

Somehow I missed this special, When The Leaves Blow Away, when it originally aired on Comedy Central, but it's re-airing tonight on the network at midnight, and the DVD of the special was released today.
Wright was on The Late Show With David Letterman last night, and he was in great (if hairy) form. He's a Boston-area guy and I've loved his stuff since the 80s. If you've never seen him, he's sort of an older, darker Demetri Martin, going from one quirky observation to another unrelated quirky observation. He was an influence on many standup comics.
After the jump, a clip from the special (he used some of the material on Letterman last night).

The Boston Phoenix makes an interesting suggestion on one of their blogs: maybe NBC should give the Late Night slot to Demetri Martin in 2009 when Conan O'Brien takes over for Jay Leno. Hmmm...
In this Daily Show clip, Martin explains the whole copyright controversy involving Viacom, Google, and YouTube. It's a great clip, with Martin asking at one point if viewers are watching him right now on YouTube (yes, it's a YouTube clip). He even freezes his body and says "buffering." Funny stuff. Both videos after the jump (YouTube version and Comedy Central's, just in case...)

Watch your backs, Harvard alum. Yale's looking to take on the Crimson mafia's domination of televised comedy. For the uninformed, this is the fast track to a job as a television comedy writer:
1. Be a man - preferably a Catholic or a Jew. (More guilt = More funny)
2. Go to Harvard. (Legacy, class privilege, whatever it takes to get you there.)
3. Write for the
Lampoon.
That's it. Within a year or two of graduation, you should be writing for
Conan,
The Daily Show,
SNL,
The Office or
The Simpsons. Guaranteed. Or, is it? Certain Yalies are looking to challenge Harvard's stranglehold on the writer's room. The
Yale Daily News paints a picture of Yale's growing influence on comedy or, at least, Comedy Central. The article name-checks Yalies Lewis Black, Demetri Martin, John Hodgman,
Daily Show writer Steve Bodow and
Colbert Report head writer Allison Silervman. Hodgman offered, "By accident, maybe there is the beginning of a similar - extremely feeble - Yale network of professionals that may give the aspiring comedy writer on
Cross Campus a glimmer of hope." And, so the elitist pissing contest commences.
For those of you who want to pursue a career in comedy and can't afford the Ivy route, you will be happy to know that Jon Stewart attended the College of William and Mary, Tina Fey is a woman and Bob Odenkirk is an atheist.

Back in June I mentioned that comedian Demetri Martin had a one-hour special coming up early next year. Well, it's now early next year, and the special is called Demetri Martin. Person. That seems accurate enough. If you're a fan of Martin, you won't be surprised that the comedy special will include animation, drawings and music all culled from the mind of Mr. Martin. It will air on January 14 at 10pm.
Demetri attended law school briefly but dropped out to get into comedy. I'm not sure why he thought he couldn't do both. I mean, you've got the jury sitting right there, it's like a captive audience. Sure, you'd probably lose every case and innocent people would go to jail for life, but you would have made people laugh, and that's what it's really all about.

"Indecision 2006": Forget any of the news going on in Iraq, Samantha Bee broke in with some important information... John Kerry is losing elections he's not even in. Kerry seriously
botched up a joke. He left out an "us" in one of his comments, meant to be a jab at Bush, and it turned into an unintended insult against our nation's troops. Of course, it was a pretty stupid thing for Kerry to do, but the GOP have been making it seem even worse thant is. I laughed way too loudly at the clip from Kerry's CD of botched comedy stylings... "Hickory dickory dock... A woman felated my penis." Aasif Mandvi explained how comedy works in the American government... The big wigs get to make
as many inappropriate jokes as they please, but John Kerry's botched jokes are
not cool.Continue reading The Daily Show: November 1, 2006

When it was announced that Microsoft signed on
The Daily Show contributor
Demetri Martin for some ads, many accused the company of trying to copy the success of the new Mac ads featuring Martin's fellow
TDS contributor,
John Hodgman. Well,
in actuality, Microsoft has utilized the talents of several
TDS correspondents for quite a while now. Samantha Bee, Rob Corddry, and Ed Helms have already done various video segments and appearances for Microsoft.
Still no word on which company has called dibs on Jon Stewart.

This was a special topic-specific episode, entitled
"Race: The Afrospanicindioasianization Of America" (and yes, Jon did stumble over the name). "Evolution
Schmevolution", their last topic-specific series, was somewhat disappointing, so I wasn't expecting much from this
episode. And I'm glad I didn't. I guess some of the correspondents wanted to take a vacation or something because there
weren't any of them on live (just Jon and Resident Expert John Hodgman).

Back in September of 2005,
The Daily
Show featured a special report, "
Evolution Schmevolution", during
which they totally resolved the issue concerning intelligent design vs. evolution in just four half-hour segments.
Well, it looks like
The Daily Show is off to fix another one of the world's problems with another special
report. In response to the current turmoil over the immigration issue, they will present "Race: The
Afrospanicindioasianization Of America". Ooh, catchy title. According to
the press
release, Rob Corddry, John Hodgman, and Demetri Martin ("Trendspotting" for immigrants?) will be joining
Jon Stewart to completely solve the issues of bigotry and illegal immigration within 22 minutes.
I wish they
still had Lewis Black hanging around. For some reason, I feel like a "Back in Black" portion would be
appropriate. Anyway, this episode will air on Wednesday at regular
TDS time (11:00 PM EST).

Ahh, the Iraqi war has headed into its fourth year... its
senior year. And Bush's ratings have hit a senior slump. Currently, it seems as though Bush is the only one who
realizes what a great job he has been doing. I absolutely loved that series of manipulated clips of Bush from various
press conferences ("One of my favorite tactics is to say the same thing over and over and over again").
