The folks at our sister site
Cinematical are working hard to give you news and reviews of the best -- and worst -- the silver screen has to offer. Here are some of their musings on the latest blockbusters, indies, and everything in between:
- Cinematical is at Sundance and writer Eric Snyder outs fellow blogger, Defamer's Stu Van Airsdale as a joke thief. FACT: Cold weather and Mormons bring out the worst in people.
- So what do you make of the whole "Joaquin Phoenix as a rapper" thing? Personally, I think it's a joke or an over-extended performance piece. Regardless, Casey Affleck is making a documentary about Phoenix's quest. Share your thoughts over on Cinematical.
- If freezing your ass off in your own town isn't enough for you, you can imagine what you would be doing while freezing your ass off in Park City, Utah when you read Sundance in 60 Seconds.
- After seeing a trailer, I twittered that I couldn't think of a movie more unappealing than Bride Wars. I quickly got a reply from a movie reviewer friend who said, "Paul Blart: Mall Cop. Trust me." See if she was right when Cinematical reviews Paul Blart: Mall Cop.
- January is pretty much a dead zone for movies. Cinematical was able to find seven decent ones, though. Go figure. Check out the Cinematical Seven: Great January Movies.

David Letterman likes to make people think he's just phoning it in. And I'm starting to wonder if it's not just an act.
Defamer caught him recycling his jokes last week. His monologue on Wednesday (Apr. 2) was nearly identical to his monologue on Thursday (Apr. 3).
Seriously. He just changed up the wording of a few jokes, and some of them he repeated word-for-word. This isn't like his on-going jokes about the "hookers in Times Square" or the "squirrels in Central Park" or "John McCain is so old that...".

The other day, Defamer put up a
funny flowchart that would allow a reader to figure out if it was in the target audience for
Studio 60. It's pretty well-known that, despite the show's lousy ratings, NBC is sticking with the it because the
relative affluence of its small audience is attractive to advertisers. So this chart lets you know if you are part of that elite group.
Some of the better questions: If you said "yes" to the question "Do you remember John Goodman from
Roseanne?", you're sent to a dead end that says, "Trick Question. Thanks for playing. Hillbilly." And it also measures how many Amanda Peet movies you've seen. If it's in the range of "
Saving Silverman - 4", you're OK. If it's five or more, "Your A.P. quota has been met."
The interesting part of this is that I tried to find the original post that introduced this flowchart (I thought Defamer posted it yesterday or the day before), and couldn't find it. Hm. Did Aaron Sorkin's jack-booted thugs get to Defamer? It's a mystery.

The National Enquirer is reporting that Grey's Anatomy costars Patrick Dempsey and Isaiah Washington got into a fight on the set of the hit ABC drama on Monday. While Patrick, Washington, and costar T.R. Knight were waiting to do a scene, Washington said something nasty to Knight, and Patrick stood up for him. That's when Washington got into a shoving match with Dempsey, and one source says that Washington even tried to choke him, then stormed off the set. He later came back to finish the scene.
Supposedly, Washington is upset over the whole "McDreamy" nonsense that shows like The Insider and Entertainment Tonight and gossip mags are pushing. To which I say, "amen." Though it's not enough to McChoke somebody. I mean, that's just McStupid.

Update: Dempsey and Washington confirm the fight, though they say no punches were thrown.

Nip/Tuck writers are
running a storyline about Scientology. Creator Ryan Murphy says he's curious about it and not just planning to go this way just for the publicity or the controversy. Too late. Anything involving Scientology becomes controversial. This story arc also happens to include Brooke Shields who bore the brunt of Tom Cruise's anti-psychiatry rants during the year of his melt down. Shields plays a doctor
will play a shrink. Just a coincidence says Murphy, who feels Brooks Shields seems "psychiatristy" to him.
It looks like they will be using Scientology pretty extensively, with Kimber and Matt taking long saunas together and "auditing" each other.
Nip/Tuck will explore the way people might use a belief system the way plastic surgery is used, and try to open up a religion that's name and celebrity followers is known, but which keeps a lot of its beliefs and rituals secret. Seems a logical step for the series, Matt is one of the most confused characters in the history of original cable series, always looking for an answer in some new extreme way. Kimber and Christian aren't far behind.

The Defaker website, a mock blog linked off NBC's
Studio 60 website, has been pulled off the internet.
The LA Times has a great rundown about the rapid rise and fall of Defaker (obviously a spoof of
Defamer). The fake blog, meant as a publicity stunt for
Studio 60, was supposed to be a fan journal with gossip about the cast and crew of
Studio 60 and thoughts on the fake show (Aaron Sorkin had nothing to do with it). The first entry on the blog basically recapped the season premiere. But, it was dumb. And it had open comments-- which summoned some
Studio 60-haters and general hate toward NBC.
