Three Rivers will spend December on the shelf

alex_oloughlin_cbsYou knew it was a bad sign in November when CBS decided to flip flop Cold Case and Three Rivers to test whether it was the time slots that were dictating the sliding ratings of the Sunday night dramas.

The results were hardly conclusive, but consistently drawing less than 2.0 in the demographics has doomed Three Rivers. CBS has pulled Three Rivers off the schedule for December. Merry Christmas, Alex O'Loughlin lovers.

This is the first step to cancellation and anyone who tells you otherwise is blowing smoke. Despite a big star in the center, Three Rivers is an earnest medical drama that's just not catching on with viewers. CBS will complete the 13-episode order and then kiss the show bye-bye.

All My Children and One Life to Live on the move

abc_daytime_logoFor nearly a week, ABC denied that there was any truth to the rumor that All My Children was moving to the West Coast. Then yesterday the network just announced the cross-country relocation. ABC Daytime released a statement explaining that this December, All My Children -- which has been produced in New York City for 39 years -- is going to Los Angeles. And One Life to Live, also a New York soap, is getting All My Children's studio. Yes, a hand-me down facility, but just don't think of it that way.

While the move for AMC and OLTL will mean better facilities and more space, what about the casts and crews? Will all the actors on AMC make the move west -- or is this a way to cost cut and drop a few players along the way? Susan Lucci is a given; she'll go west.

Are you ready for a Christmas-themed reality show?

Rockefeller Center treeNot even Christmas is safe from reality show producers.

The people who brought you Dancing with the Stars have another show up their sleeves: Clash of the Choirs. It will pit five celebrity singers who will go back to their hometowns and try to build a choir. Once the choirs are built and perform live, viewers will vote for them via phone (of course). The winner gets to pick a prize for their hometown (I suggest maybe passing a law that says no reality shows can be filmed in their hometowns). The four episode show will run just before Christmas, December 17-20.

HBO to air documentary on Darfur genocide

hboThis December, HBO will air a documentary about the genocide happening in the Darfur region of Sudan. It's called Sand and Sorrow, and it's narrated by George Clooney. The special aims to chronicle the history that led up to the current violence and point fingers of blame at the international community for ignoring the crisis.

The documentary follows around three prominent Americans as they travel through Sudan to investigate the mass killings and then to the United States as they attempt to get international attention for the situation. The Americans featured are activist John Prendergast, Harvard professor Samantha Power and NYT columnist Nicholas Kristof.

Taking the Deal or No Deal approach to scheduling, NBC has decided to fast-track the show and air it every night over an eight night stretch between December 18th and December 22nd. The Simpsons season nine out on DVD in December

simpsonsThe ever-vigilant TVShowsonDVD has announced that the ninth season of The Simpsons will be ready for purchase in digital versatile format on December 19, just in time for any family members who might be reading this to grab the set for me for Christmas. Hell, I haven't even made it all the way through my eighth season set yet and already a new one has been announced -- not that I'm complaining. The ninth season has more than a few great episodes: the family's trip to New York City; Homer buying a handgun to protect his family; a religious debate spurned by the alleged remains of a dead angel; the students of Springfield Elementary stranded on an island a la Lord of the Flies; Homer and his reluctant family joining the Movementarian cult; Bart and Lisa becoming co-anchors on a student news program while Homer purchases and subsequently almost kills a helper monkey; and Homer climbing the dangerous Murderhorn mountain to earn Bart's respect.
