The Daily Show: June 11, 2007

Jon StewartJon briefly touched upon the Paris Hilton situation by poking some fun at the media's extensive coverage. CNN complained a lot about covering it, but then proceeded to do it for the rest of the day. Oh, Anderson Cooper, you're better than this.

"Albaniacs": President Bush paid a visit to Albania, where he was received like a rock star. Oh, man... Jon had to call Dennis Miller for joke help? Weak. So weak. The Daily Show has been doing a lot of name-dropping lately, in the form of these silly little phone calls and those Giant Head appearances. I'm not sure I like it very much.

Jon Stewart talks about drugs, Petticoat Junction and eating lightbulbs

Jon StewartYou can watch several episodes of the TV Land talk show Sit Down Comedy with David Steinberg right at the TV Land web site (full episodes from the second season and highlights of the first). Steinberg has interviewed everyone from Jerry Seinfeld to Bob Newhart, but the show that I'd like to talk about is the one where he interviews Daily Show host Jon Stewart. It's actually one of the best interviews with Stewart I've ever seen.

David Steinberg is a busy guy

David SteinbergVeteran comic/director/writer David Steinberg has a lot of stuff going on.

The second season of his TV Land talk show, Sit Down Comedy, began a couple of weeks ago with an interview with Jerry Seinfeld. This Wednesday, Steinberg sits down with Daily Show host Jon Stewart. The show airs at 10pm. The following weeks, Steinberg will interview Garry Shandling and then Ray Romano.

But that's not all: Steinberg also has a book coming out in June, The Book of David. And he's a busy guy in his life as a director too. He's directing his seventh season at Curb Your Enthusiasm, episodes of Campus Ladies, and a pilot for Dane Cook.

There might be a lot of people who aren't familiar with Steinberg since a lot of his work has been behind the camera for a while, but he has quite a resume.

Jerry Seinfeld should be the next Oscar host

Jerry SeinfeldOne of the things I forgot to mention in my review of Sunday night / Monday morning's Oscar ceremony was the welcome sight of Jerry Seinfeld presenting the award for best long-form documentary. By the time ol' Jer showed up to give the award, most viewers, including myself, were punchy and tired, but it did seem like he injected a much-needed bit of irreverent humor into the show.

His prepared stand-up bit was short but funny. He talked about how movie theaters shouldn't ask patrons to clean up after themselves because, after overcharging for popcorn and food that he shouldn't even be eating, he should have the right to be able to dispense of his junk by just opening his hand. He then led into the announcement of the nominations by saying: "And now, here are the five extremely depressing films that are nominated for this award."

All of this leads me to wonder: Why has Jerry never hosted this show? He seems to be a natural at it.

Steinberg's Sit Down Comedy returns in February

David Steinberg Sit Down Comedy TV LandDavid Steinberg is back for another season of Sit Down Comedy on TV Land. Six new episodes will air Wednesdays at 10PM beginning February 21st. Less of a kiss-ass than James Lipton and with more comedy chops than Terry Gross, Steinberg creates just the right atmosphere for his Sit Down stand-up guests to reflect on their careers, lives and whatever else is on their fertile minds. Best of all, his guests aren't there to plug any products so an actual old school conversation can unfold. Remember those? You might see them on Charlie Rose from time to time or on those Dick Cavett DVDs Shout! Factory released last year. Too bad Steinberg's show is only thirty minutes long.

You can check out Sit Down Comedy's guest line-up after the jump.

Seinfeld: The Tape

Seinfeld: The Tape(S03E08) I've never been enamored with this episode, even though it's pretty funny. For some reason, the way everybody acts in this one is just enough out of character that something about it just seems off to me.

Don't get me wrong... the thought of Elaine / JLD breathily speaking the unspeakable into a tape recorder makes me a little weak in the knees. But it just seems like everyone's reaction to the tape was just a little too creepy for my tastes. But, again, it's a pretty funny episode; in fact, it was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Writing In a Comedy Series. So what do I know?
