Some Caprica and Warehouse 13 casting news

Paula MalcomsonEarly last month I posted a casting call sheet for the upcoming Battlestar Galactica prequel show, Caprica. In that list was a call for Amanda Graystone, a "surgeon with a volatile streak to her" who is "something of a double agent." Well, you can scratch that one off the list of openings, as Paula Malcomson (Trixie of Deadwood and Jerri of John From Cincinnati) has been cast in the role.

My interest in Caprica hinges on how Battlestar Galactica concludes; will I really want to know more about how it all began? I could see them putting us in a place that has us craving for more, though it's likely Caprica is meant to stand on its own and without having to follow too many rules set by the BSG events. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Fred Savage is going to be a dad

fred savage babyAh, I love happy news.

Fred Savage, formerly of the short-lived show Crumbs and the classic The Wonder Years, is going to be a father. His wife, Jennifer Stone Savage, is pregnant and due in August.

Savage is 29 years old. This is the first child for the couple.

The long list of shows that may not return in the fall

upfronts criminal intentThe upfronts are right around the corner, where network executives let advertisers know what shows will be making the cut for next fall. Early word from MediaLife is that NBC has the longest list of shows might not be returning. Probably the most surprising show on the list is Law and Order: Criminal Intent. With the rotating cast and drooping ratings, media watchers say this one is likely on the chopping block (the other two are safe, though). Things aren't looking good for Commander in Chief, either. And, of course, we already knew that there is a good chance Scrubs will be... scrubbed (but possibly get new life on ABC).

Here are the shows (on all networks) that media buyers think are in danger of cancellation:

Crumbs on hiatus

crumbs fred savageCrumbs' two week hiatus just got extended indefinitely by ABC. The new Fred Savage comedy was off the schedule during the Olympics but now it doesn't appear to be returning anytime soon. Instead, ABC will stretch next week's episode of Dancing with the Stars to two hours. The network has scheduled movies, Sweet Home Alabama and Bringing Down the House, on the following Thursdays, March 2 and 9. Then, ABC launches the Simon Cowell competition American Inventor and, starting March 23, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition comes to Thursdays.

It's actually a bit of a surprise that Crumbs is shelved. It's the highest-rated comedy on ABC these days, even ahead of The George Lopez Show. There are eight episodes of Crumbs that are left to air so maybe we'll see it back on the schedule this summer. Or on iTunes.

Marco Pennette talks about inspiration for Crumbs

Crumbs pilotThose of you who saw Crumbs on Thursday know that the family depicted in the show is "based on a true story." But, given some of the "adjustments" that have been made to true stories these days, how close was the show to the actual story? Pretty close, if this article in the New York Daily News is any indication. In it, series creator Marco Pennette tells writer Richard Huff about some of the incidents that were either depicted or alluded to in the pilot (like his mother running over his father after he left her), and how the pilot script came to fruition. Even if you think, like I did, Crumbs is an intriguing premise that's hancuffed by generic sitcom writing, you'll find this article an interesting read.

Crumbs: Pilot

Crumbs castCrumbs is a show that is trying really hard to be something different than your standard sitcom. The problem is, it's probably trying a little too hard.

Here's the gist: Suzanne Crumb (Jane Curtin) is just getting out of a mental health care facility after having a nervous breakdown. She's not quite all the way back but has decided to leave. Her son Mitch (Fred Savage), a famous "movie writer" who is in the closet -- he's even sleeping with his therapist -- comes home to Connecticut to help her ease back into everyday life. He's also returned to mend fences with his brother Jody (Eddie McClintock), who hasn't forgiven him for running away after their brother Patrick died in a boating accident, the basis for Mitch's hit movie. Why did Suzanne lose her marbles? Because her husband Billy (William Devane) left her for a younger woman -- a restaurant reviewer who is now having their baby --  and abandoned the restaurant he ran with Jody, who is the chef.

Fred Savage talks about his new show

Bob talked last month about Fred Savage's new show, Crumbs, which debuts tomorrow night at 9:30EST on ABC. Bob didn't have a lot of info on the show at that time, but thanks to a great interview with Savage over on CNN, we now have more Fredtabulous scoop for you. Crumbs is a show about a dysfunctional family (I know, shocking to have a dysfunctional family in a sitcom, but bear with me). Jane Curtin plays the mom, who just got released from the mental hospital. Dad (William Devane) is expecting a baby with his girlfriend. One son is dead, one (Eddie McClintock) stuck around to run the family restaurant, and the third (Savage) is a gay prodigal son returning home from a failed Hollywood career.

Mid-season television preview

Now that 2005 is behind us, we can look forward to new and returning favorite shows all this month on television. What will you be watching?

South Beach (Wednesdays, UPN) Two hot, New York City working-class bachelors leave the big city behind to follow one of their girlfriends to South Beach, FL, only to discover that she has a new boyfriend. They get mixed up with the rich and famous in the club scene. After viewing a sneak preview on UPN's website, it looks like a guilty pleasure like The O.C., except with more sex and no high school. Jennifer Lopez is the executive producer and it co-stars Vanessa Williams as a club owner and mother to one of the main characters. South Beach premieres on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 8 pm.
