Shark gets a full season

James WoodsOn the heels of news that both 7th Heaven and The Game were given full season orders comes news that CBS' Shark, with James Woods as a hotshot lawyer, has been given a full season as well. The most recent episode got the series best ratings yet.

This reminded me that CBS only put four new shows on their lineup this fall. Jericho and Shark have gotten full season orders, nothing has been said about The Class yet, and Smith was canceled only after a few episodes.

Conviction: Savasana

j august richards; convictionOnce again, lots of things happen. Christina (Julianne Nicholson) is heartbroken over an emotional case involving a dead baby, Billy (J. August Richards) is trying to keep his perfect record in the courtroom, Cabot (Stephanie March) and Steele (Anson Mount) get it on, Potter (Jordan Bridges) grows some balls, and Peluso (Eric Balfour) hounds the beautiful but icey girl in the office. By the way, did anybody catch why the title of this episode is 'Savasana'? I don't get it.

Well, Billy is a jerk. In his personal life and his work life. He sleeps with a girl who turns out to be a clerk and then totally shrugs her off when he sees her in the courthouse. But, even worse than that was his attempt to get a woman to drop her 1974 rape case because it wasn't a slam dunk for him. He tells the rape victim, "I don't want to put you through any unnecessary pain." Grrrr.

Conviction: an early review

conviction reviewNBC was kind enough to make the new Dick Wolf procedural drama, Conviction, available for free on iTunes before it airs on Friday night. So, I took advantage. I'm just going to give you my general thoughts on the program. There will be NO SPOILERS HERE.

If you like Law and Order, you will probably like Conviction. There are a lot of characters on the show who will make for some great storylines that will no doubt be driven by the criminals and crime victims. It looks as though we'll be getting two storylines an episode, instead of just one, like the usual Dick Wolf procedural dramas.

L&O: Criminal Intent reaches a milestone

The third successful spin-off of the original Law and Order series is about to reach its 100th episode, a milestone for any television show. This Sunday's all-new Criminal Intent features the original cast members, Vincent D'Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe, who have been alternating episodes with new detectives Chris Noth and Annabella Sciorra. The episode is called Slither and it was written by executive producer Rene Balcer. The episode is about a European gang leader who likes to kill tourists. By the way, I think the word 'slither' is meant to be a description of the main criminal because the show description doesn't mention anything about snakes. The episode also features Olivia D'Abo, a character whom viewers voted to keep alive during a poll in the show's fourth season. Criminal Intent airs Sundays at 9 pm on NBC.

Richard Hatch's tax evasion trial begins

The very first winner of Survivor could be headed for prison. Richard Hatch is accused of not paying income tax on his $1 million prize and on other income. Hatch is also accused of spending money on himself that had been earmarked for a charity that he helped create. Charges include tax evasion, filing a false tax return, wire fraud, bank fraud and mail fraud.

Hatch and his youthful-looking boytoy attorney appeared in court on Tuesday as the task of jury selection began. Media reports say, when potential jurors entered the courtroom, a lot of them appeared to recognize Hatch and whispered to each other. I think I know what they were saying: "I've seen that man naked."

Jury selection continues today, then opening arguments should begin on Thursday. The trial is expected to last up to three weeks.

Lillo Brancato arraigned on murder charges

A courtroom in the Bronx was full on Monday when former Sopranos actor Lillo Brancato Jr. and a friend were arraigned on murder charges. Brancato and his buddy, Steven Armento, are accused of shooting a cop who caught them by surprise during a robbery on December 10th.

The courtroom was filled with spectators, including the parents of the dead police officer, Daniel Enchuategui. The families of Brancato and Armento were also there, as well as a handful of police officers. An estimated 150 off-duty police officers stood outside the courtroom in a show of support for the fallen officer.
