If we lived in a world where we could only watch five TV networks on our televisions (I don't know what type of world that would be but it sounds like one of those bleak futures you often see in sci-fi movies), I would definitely choose Turner Classic Movies as one of those networks. That's a no-brainer. I think I'd have a harder time choosing which major networks(s) I'd want on that list too.
The movie network has announced that they're doing a
classic film festival in April 2010.

As much a I love TV -- and I do -- I'm also a real movie fan. I used to have a button that read "Movie Buff," and I actually wore it! So, it's without a bit of irony that I declare here and now that I love Turner Classic Movies. TCM is the definitive film fan destination on the entire cable/satellite/broadcast dial. Here's five reasons to back up my claim -- see if you don't agree.
1) Choice - Name another channel that you can watch from daybreak till midnight and not have to reach for the remote. TCM has thousands of movies, and as many as I've seen since I started really watching, they broadcast films that are new to me (and believe me, I've logged hudreds of hours watching films). The Turner library is stuffed with classics, A-movies, B's, two-reelers, shorts, silents ... MGMs, Warners, RKO's, and more -- they cover the spectrum. Ted Turner knew what he was doing when he created the channel in 1994. TCM promised to be "uninterrupted, uncolorized and commercial-free!" In 14 years they've stuck by the creed.

Ebert & Roeper co-host Richard Roeper has a new gig, host of the new monthly Starz series Starz Inside.
Or maybe we should say Roeper has another gig, as he'll be staying with the longrunning syndicated movie review show too. Starz Inside will be a series of specials that take a behind the scenes look at the movie industry. Episodes will include "Fog City Mavericks: The Filmmakers of San Francisco," which will feature George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, Clint Eastwood, and Chris Columbus and "Hollywood Goes Gaming," which will have the history of video games and their effect on the movie industry. They'll even have an episode on "Bloodsucking Cinema," which will showcase the world of vampires on the big screen.
The show premieres on September 24 at 9pm.

So I'm watching AMC's
Sunday Morning Shootout this morning (a show I try not to miss even though Peter Bart often infuriates me), and I notice that they've completely changed their set. It used to be a real-looking coffeehouse set, with tables and booths and customers in the background and a counter where they would make coffee for the guests and serve them. Now, the set is different. It still seems to have the same colors as the old set and the movie posters, but it's a lot smaller, there are no other customers or tables in the background, and even the counter is gone, replaced with a wall and some coffee urns and a rack. It now looks like the far corner of some Border's cafe, or maybe someone's house. Why the change?
It's too bad we won't get anymore moments like the time Vince Vaughn was on the show. He not only picked up his coffee from the "clerk" at the counter, but he actually paid for it! That was pretty funny.

Film critic Roger Ebert is going to have his fourth
cancer surgery on June 16th, two days before his 64th birthday.
Ebert has already had three surgeries. In 2002, he had a malignant tumor removed from his thyroid gland, and in 2003 he had two surgeries on his salivary glands. Ebert says that the cancer is not life-threatening, he won't need radiation therapy, and he'll continue as a film critic while all of this is going on.
On a personal note, I wish Ebert well. He has always been very generous and kind to me in my other life as a magazine publisher, contributing articles when he really didn't have to, so I hope that everything turns out OK and he's back battling with Richard Roeper about the summer movies.
Update: Ebert will tape several episodes of
Ebert & Roeper so they will air during his recovery.

No, that's not a typo. The former
That 70s Show star is going to star in TCM's
first original series, which will be a game show where amateur actors recreate a classic movie scene with Valderrama.
Yeah. In the 70s we called it
Don Adam's Screen Test.
Speaking of old TV shows, Valderrama is about to start filming the big screen version of the series
CHiPs.

I believe a refresher course in common sense is in
order: If it's poisonous, don't eat it. If it's hot, don't touch it. If it's called
Dallas, film it in Dallas,
Texas. Well, now no one can say I didn't try. Apparently, the minds behind the upcoming big-screen version of
Dallas
have decided to film in, of all places,
Jacksonville,
Florida. First of all, is a remake of
Dallas really necessary? Second of all... Jacksonville?! Wow, all
this makes about as much sense as having
Jennifer Lopez in the movie... Or
having the
British director of
Bend
It Like Beckham head the project. Next up: All the dialogue will be done... in the form of Gregorian chants!
