If we lived in a world where we could only watch five TV networks on our televisions (I don't know what type of world that would be but it sounds like one of those bleak futures you often see in sci-fi movies), I would definitely choose Turner Classic Movies as one of those networks. As much a I love TV -- and I do -- I'm also a real movie fan. I used to have a button that read "Movie Buff," and I actually wore it! So, it's without a bit of irony that I declare here and now that I love Turner Classic Movies. TCM is the definitive film fan destination on the entire cable/satellite/broadcast dial. Ebert & Roeper co-host Richard Roeper has a new gig, host of the new monthly Starz series Starz Inside.
Or maybe we should say Roeper has another gig, as he'll be staying with the longrunning syndicated movie review show too. Starz Inside will be a series of specials that take a behind the scenes look at the movie industry. Episodes will include "Fog City Mavericks: The Filmmakers of San Francisco," which will feature George Lucas, Francis Ford Coppola, Clint Eastwood, and Chris Columbus and "Hollywood Goes Gaming," which will have the history of video games and their effect on the movie industry. They'll even have an episode on "Bloodsucking Cinema," which will showcase the world of vampires on the big screen.
The show premieres on September 24 at 9pm.
So I'm watching AMC's Sunday Morning Shootout this morning (a show I try not to miss even though Peter Bart often infuriates me), and I notice that they've completely changed their set. It used to be a real-looking coffeehouse set, with tables and booths and customers in the background and a counter where they would make coffee for the guests and serve them. Now, the set is different. It still seems to have the same colors as the old set and the movie posters, but it's a lot smaller, there are no other customers or tables in the background, and even the counter is gone, replaced with a wall and some coffee urns and a rack. It now looks like the far corner of some Border's cafe, or maybe someone's house. Why the change?
