The Next Iron Chef is sizzling

the_next_iron_chef_season_two
Even though I watch a lot of programming on the Food Network, I have to admit I missed almost all of the The Next Iron Chef in season one. Last Sunday, the second season of The Next Iron Chef blasted off with the best ratings for a series opener in Food Network history. Over two million viewers, a 1.1 rating among adults 25-54.

Why the big jump? Well, I think a lot of other people are like me. On Sunday, before I switched over to watch pro football, I clicked on Food Network where they were showing a marathon rerun of the first season of The Next Iron Chef. It only took half an episode for me to kick myself for not having watched the whole first season when it aired. It was terrific.

The Next Food Network Star: Miami Up All Night - open thread

The Next Food Network StarWe're really down to the nitty-gritty on The Next Food Network Star. After tonight's elimination, we're down to four contestants, and just think: one of them is going to have their own show on Food Network.

None of these people strike me as having the presence of a Guy Fieri, but he was raw once too so maybe one of these people will really shine in the next few weeks and the coming months.

Sneak Peek: NBC's Great American Road Trip

This is another one of those summer shows I didn't know was coming up until I started seeing ads a few days ago. The Great American Road Trip is NBC's new reality show that sends seven families cross-country, where they engage in various challenges against each other for fame and fortune. Or maybe just fortune.

This could actually be a fun show, sort of The Amazing Race meets Family Double Dare. You know there's going to be families to hate and families to love. Maybe they'll have a challenge where they tie a dog to the bumper and have to keep him alive on the drive to the next state. It starts July 7.

How could I just "forget" that Next Food Network Star was on last night? - open thread

Next Food Network StarThe hell? I've been really enjoying Next Food Network Star so far this season, and was all set to watch it last night. And then I just completely forgot that it was on. I can't even remember what I was watching last night at that time. I think it was another Andy Griffith Show marathon. It was the episode where Barney misunderstood something and screwed everything up.

So how was this "Dinner at Ina's" episode? This is going to be one of those times where I don't even read your comments until I watch the episode, which I'm going to do right now.

The Next Food Network Star: Episode 2 - open thread

Next Food Network StarI'm really enjoying this season so far. It has a good mix of drama, guest stars, good challenges, and actual food being made. What did you think of this episode? Were Brett and Teddy right in what they said about Melissa, or did they only help a little and she probably could have done it on her own? I think she accepted their help not out of panic but just because they offered and anyone would in that situation, though it would have been nice if she had mentioned that to the judges.

The CW meets Little Miss Sunshine with Crowned

Little Miss AustinThis idea is either profoundly sick or profoundly brilliant. I haven't decided which. The CW has announced an eight-episode reality competition focused on mother-daughter teams working to win a beauty pageant. Now, from what I understand, this is a "mother-daughter" pageant not a "stage mom who wishes to live vicariously through the daughter who robbed her of her youth" pageant. The teams on Crowned will have their relationships tested through clothing, swimwear, interview and dance competitions.

Beauty and the Geek rocks the Cantina

Nate Beauty and the GeekStar Wars tribute band So Long Princess is about to get a few thousand friend requests. Last night's premiere of Beauty and the Geek introduced us to Nate Dern, the Harvard student who fronts the band and took the prize in the show's first two challenges. The band has an EP out - Alderaan is Asteroids. You can check out the fun, punky tracks "Stormtrooper," "Kessel Run," "Shades of Darth" and "Pining for Mynock" at the band's MySpace page.

As I pointed out in my "early look" at the show, I think Nate has a bit of leg up on the other geeks. He fronts a band, which automatically makes him a tad more extroverted than, say, Mario, the guy with 25,000 comics. My guess is that Nate cleans up pretty well, too. Not that he should let the show temper his fashion sense. Honestly, most of these geeks are pretty freaking cool dudes. (Heck, Neils is even a professional dating coach now.) They may give the state college sorority sisters the willies, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a few hipsters chicks throwing up a fan site or two. I've got dibs on www.TeamPiao.com.

Beauty and The Geek season three -- an early look

Beauty and the GeekThe casting directors have outdone themselves this time. The third season of The CW's Beauty and The Geek is set for a two-hour premiere on January 3rd, and while the formula remains the same, the players have changed. This season's geek squad is enough to make the average Boing Boing reader cream her pants. We're talking about a Linux operator, a guy who fronts a Star Wars tribute band, a hardcore Trekkie ("Trekker is the preferred term."), a gamer with a Nintendo controller tattooed to his arm and a MIT grad who's memorized Pi out some 100 decimal places because it makes him fun at parties. The beauties are, in the words of the geeks, "shiny" and "full of cleavage." They're also capable of delivering more "Where's the Panama Canal?"-type moments in a half hour period than an army of Jessica Simpson clones. Needless to say, it's going to be a great season.
