From the 1950s through the 1980s, reality television programming was a rarity on the schedules of the Big Three networks. It was more of a novelty that piqued the interest of the viewers for a few months or a few seasons, then was relegated back into the shadows while scripted shows dominated the airwaves. It wasn't until the very end of the 1980s, when FOX premiered COPS, that reality-based programming became a prime-time staple.
It stayed that way for several years. Then, just like that, it all changed, thanks to one show that premiered in 1992. With a simple program on a fairly new cable channel, reality programming went from television rarity to huge success. So much so that, in a few short years, it spawned various direct copies and variations of its concept on both the over-the-air and cable networks. By the early 21st century the airwaves were filled with more reality programming than scripted works, garnering the ire and the joy of many a long-time television viewer.
And, it all began on a network primarily known for its music videos and Pauly Shore.

Mark your calendars and book your air travel; in a couple of months, "Stephen Colbert Day" will be celebrated in Oshawa, Ontario.
Last week, you may have heard Stephen Colbert play a statement by John Gray, the mayor of Oshawa. Gray stated that if his city's Ontario League hockey team, the
Generals, lost to the Saginaw (Michigan)
Spirit -- home of team mascot Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle -- that he would declare a day in the near future "Stephen Colbert Day."
The reason for the challenge? Colbert's rips on various teams in the OHL, including saying that the Oshawa team's annual teddy bear toss was "an obvious attempt to taunt me." (He hates bears, you know.) The Spirit
came through, winning the game 5-4; Colbert is requesting that his day be celebrated on March 20, which is Gray's birthday. If the Generals won, by the way, Colbert would have had to wear the team's jersey throughout one an episode of
The Colbert Report.

One of my favorite one-off jokes from
The Simpsons was when some interview show (conducted by Kent Brockman, of course) had Gloria Allred as a guest. In pure
Simpsonian fashion the graphic below her identified her as "Gloria Allred: Shrill Feminist Attorney."
That's what I was thinking when I saw her on the
Today show this morning. Apparently, she's representing the targets of Michael Richards'
racist tirade last Saturday, Kyle Doss and Frank McBride. And, in true grandstanding fashion, she decided to take the opportunity to challenge Richards to meet the two men he yelled at and have a retired judge arbitrate the "compensation" they deserved (
Video is here).
They deserve compensation? For getting yelled at? Who's kidding who, Gloria?

This is a variation of a word game I sometimes play with my friends. Below I've listed a bunch of television shows, but instead of writing the actual name of the show, I've written the show's "opposite." I put "opposite" in quotations because obviously not all words have exact opposites, so I have to be clever sometimes and just come up with something that kind of fits. This makes it fun. Here are some examples:
The "opposite" of Taxi might be Bus.
The "opposite" of Everybody Hates Chris might be Nobody Loves Christie.
The "opposite" of General Hospital might be Specific Clinic.
The list is after the jump. See how many you can guess. You won't win anything, just bragging rights and a cameo appearance in my next sexual fantasy. Onward:
UPDATE: Congrats to everyone who has guessed correctly so far. There are still a few left, so crank up your brains, puzzle masters.
SECOND UPDATE: One more left.
THIRD UPDATE: They've all been guessed. Good job, everyone.

Let me tell you what television does not need any
more of: rich kids living like the rest of us. Yes, we're a society that is obsessed with the lifestyles of the rich
and famous. But, I am sick of seeing rich kids try to do everyday things like go grocery shopping or mow a lawn. While
some people may revel in the fact that they know how to mow a lawn while Susie Trust Fund struggles with it, I do not.
I find these shows to be downright rude. While Paris and Nicole proved they had no life skills in
The Simple
Life, they also belittle the lives that most Americans lead.
Why am I bitching about this? Because The
WB has come out with yet another reality show that puts rich kids in everyday life situations, called
Survival of the Richest. I saw a long
promos for this program (hosted by Hal Sparks- what is that all about?) where the rich kids say negative, ignorant
things about "poor" (aka middle class) people. This reality show matches the rich kids against the working
class kids in tasks like yachting and cleaning. I'm sure it's rigged so the working class kids win because we all like
to see those rich kids go down, but I'd like it all to come to an end. Let's just go back to
Lifestyles of the Rich
and Famous and see how these people live, but keep them away from our lifestyles.
