Katie Couric just broke into CBS programming with the shocking news that longtime 60 Minutes journalist Ed Bradley died this morning of leukemia. He was 65.
I use the word shocking because I don't think there was any public indication that Bradley was sick from leukemia.
At the time of his death, Bradley was still working on 60 Minutes, and stories that he was working on still remain to be aired at a later date. He had been with 60 Minutes for 26 years and won several awards, including an Emmy, a Polk, a Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, and a duPont citation.
Bradley was married to artist Patricia Blanchet.

As we all know by now, Katie Couric
solicited her first CBS Evening News audience to help her find a good signature line that she can use at the end of each broadcast. I'd imagine she'd be looking for something closer to the dignity of "And that's the way it is," and the silliness of "Courage," but that's just a guess.
Anyway, CBSNews.com has nicely provided
a form where you can enter what you think Katie should say, but they don't show what people's responses have been so far. To me, the whole fun of this exercise is reading the responses; that's why we do stuff like
Subtle Subtitles, so we can read everyone's creative and funny ideas.
So, here's my challenge: What do YOU think Katie's sign-off should be? I like Bob's idea: "I'm Katie Couric, and I like asparagus." And here's one of my own: "I'm Katie Couric; don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out." Give me your ideas in the comments. Heck, let's make it a contest: the best sign-off gets 3 stars, 2nd best gets 2 stars, 3rd best gets 1 star. I'll pick the winners next Thursday, September 14. So fire away...
