The networks have had a quiet summer, quietly introducing scripted bomb after scripted bomb, so they're certainly ready to jump into the new fall season. And It looks to be an interesting one. ABC is scheduling a two-hour block of new comedies on Wednesdays as the sitcom tries to make a comeback.
Even more risky is NBC handing 10:00 to Jay Leno every night of the week. Everyone's waiting to see how that one plays out. FOX is banking on huge positive buzz for
Glee to make it a hit, while ABC is hoping
FlashForward can pick up where
Lost is leaving off when it wraps its run this season.

If you missed
Patton Oswalt's new special,
My Weakness Is Strong, Sunday night on Comedy Central, you can already pick it up on DVD and CD.
According to Amazon, you can but either the CD for $10.99 or get both the DVD and CD in one package for ... $10.99. Either way, it's worth it to get the DVD.
My Weakness was a good special on Comedy Central, but it's a better special on DVD. There are a few extra bits on the DVD/CD release (the jacket lists it at 64 minutes, and the TV special, deducting times for commercials, was probably about 44 minutes). It also features some amusing bonus features, including a commercial for how you can make money selling products for AVT, a merchandise warehouse operation (with guests Zach Galifianakis and Paul F. Tompkins).

The folks at
Caprica central are making a lot of geeks happy this week. First, we heard that comedian and professional nerd
Patton Oswalt was joining the
Battlestar Galactica prequel series as a Caprican talk show host. Now comes news that
Buffy the Vampire Slayer vet
James Marsters is joining the show for a sizeable arc.
Marsters will do what he does best on
Caprica: play a dangerous and unpredictable baddie driven by his carnal and moralistic desires.
EW tells us that Marsters will play a terrorist leader named Barnabus Greele in at least three episodes of the upcoming Syfy series.

Now this is getting ridiculous. There's a rumor on the Web that Justin Timberlake might be
cast in the new Battlestar Gactica movie.
At first I didn't know what to make of Universal and Bryan Singer's plans to move ahead with a
Battlestar Galactica reboot flick, but now I'm sure I want to see the project die a fiery, fiery death. Casting Justin Timberlake in a new
Battlestar movie isn't the problem. The problem is that its just plain ridiculous to have two very different versions of the same beloved franchise out there at the same time. It'll be like Marty McFly running into his future self at the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance in 1955. It could cause a chain reaction that would unravel the very fabric of the space-time continuum!

Patton Oswalt will be
joining the cast of Caprica on SyFy. He will have a recurring role of Baxter Sarno, a Caprican comedian and talk show host. I can see how the building of artificial life forms such as the Cylons could provide him with a wealth of material.
One plot point revealed in the article is that Daniel and Amanda Greystone will appear on his talk show. If you're going to sell to the public the concept of robot slaves, a talk show is the place to do it.
Oswalt has long since revealed himself to be a sci fi nerd. Other than his role on
King of Queens, he's also appeared on sci fi shows like
Dollhouse. He's also had a recurring role on
The United States of Tara, which while not exactly science fiction is pretty close to it. I think the true reveal for me of his nerdiness was when he co-wrote a
Justice League of America comic (he's also written
Batman).
Keep in mind that, according to lore of
Battlestar Galactica from the mind of Ron Moore, we're all now descendants of Patton Oswalt.

Battlestar Galactica's Luciana Carro is returning to Syfy with a role on the
BSG prequel series
Caprica. Fans will remember Carro as Kat on
BSG, the cocky Viper pilot and "stims" addict who became a thorn in Starbuck's side. Carro is the first
BSG actor to join the
Caprica cast, says
Battlestar Blog, who heard the news at a recent Wizard World Chicago Q&A.
Kat succumbed to radiation poisoning after flying her last mission in season three of
BSG. Carro will most likely be playing a new character on
Caprica, since the show takes place more than fifty years before the events of
BSG. The news has fans wondering whether or not Carro's
Caprica character will be related to Kat.

We know that
Caprica is coming to Syfy on January 22nd. We also know that Edward James Olmos is directing the
Battlestar Galactica TV movie "The Plan."
An extra little tidbit of news today is Ron Moore's response to the Emmy committee
for their snub of the final season of the show. In short, he is not a happy camper.
I wish I could say I was surprised by the Emmy snub, but Hollywood committees do tend to ignore science fiction and fantasy shows when it comes to awards (
The Lord of the Rings being the only exception that comes to mind, and that's based on a pretty classic trilogy of books).
The good news is that really good science fiction develops a following that goes far beyond any sort of award recognition. Look at
Star Wars. Did that Academy even notice that one? Not really. Yet it still sells loads of merchandise.
Battlestar Galactica will likely do the same for some time to come.

For a guy who seemed reluctant to climb aboard a
Battlestar Galactica series when it first launched, Edward James Olmos is committed body and soul now.
At a Friday early afternoon press conference at Comic-Con International, Olmos hosted a
BSG: Caprica - The Plan event to show preview footage of the new
Caprica show and to discuss
The Plan movie he directed to continue Syfy's top original franchise. The DVD release for that film hits stores on Oct. 27.
Olmos alluded to his one-time hesitance to become full-time commander of the Galactica when he told fans, "I'm on board Battlestar Galactica for the rest of my life." That would have brought a huge cheer from fans at a panel, but reporters and such tend to be more subdued.
Olmos' enthusiasm and partial contrition is a classy way of saying, "I never foresaw how successful
BSG would be, and I know a good thing when I see it." In fact, the sci-fi epic completely resurrected his career.
Caprica premieres January 22, 2009 on Syfy.

If you are, then you could potentially work for Bear McCreary, who wrote the theme to the new(er)
Battlestar Galactica and its spin-off
Caprica.
He's looking for a web designer to design a site for The Battlestar Galactica Orchestra.
I gotta hand it to the man for his cleverness. There are likely web designer rabid fans out there who would happily clean Bear McCreary's car with their tongue for a chance to have their name attached with any aspect of the franchise (hopefully they have some talent). I'm sure there will be a cyberspace line to help Mr. McCreary design his site and he doesn't have to pay a dime.
On the other hand, the winner of the contest gets some pretty cool one-of-a-kind
Battlestar Galactica merchandise (including the baton from the
BSG concert McCreary be conducting), so maybe everybody wins. If you want to create that clever idea of an entire orchestra of Cylon Centurions, now's your chance.

Originally,
it was slated for July 4th, but now Fox has moved the pilot for Ron Moore's new virtual reality series
Virtuality into its
Friday Night Death Slot on June 26th. I guess it wasn't even worthy of a holiday showing.
You'd think, given how the relaunch of
Battlestar Galactica renewed interest in mature, complex science fiction that Fox would have more faith in the series. They were probably looking for something akin to
24 and all they got was a bunch of crew members playing video games on a long space mission.
On the other hand, the show could legitimately suck. I would tend to doubt it as I've always liked Moore's work on the
Star Trek franchise and certainly
BSG.
Caprica wasn't as good as I'd hoped, but it's only the pilot.
In order for
Virtuality to have any chance of survival than all it has to do is get good ratings on a Fox Friday night during the summer. Yeah, good luck with that.

This week, actors
Michael Trucco and
Kate Vernon both hinted that they'd like to appear in
Caprica, the
Battlestar Galactica prequel series.
The former
BSG stars say it's possible for their characters, Sam Anders and Ellen Tigh, to appear on
Caprica, which takes place roughly fifty years before the events of
BSG.
The uncut, two-hour long
Caprica pilot hit DVD last month, but the series won't premiere on Sci Fi Channel until 2010. Should Anders and Ellen be a part of it? (

It's hard to judge a new series by watching a bunch of random clips played out of order an out of context -- but let's do it anyway!
Sci Fi just released
seven clips from Caprica, the upcoming
Battlestar Galactica prequel series from
Battlestar producers Ron Moore and David Eick. (
UPDATE: Videos can now be found
here.) The show seems to be about humanity's reaction to rapid advances in technology and shifting ideologies. It centers on two families – the Greystones and the Adamas – who are "joined by tragedy in an explosive instant of terror," according to SciFi.

Before you get excited about the title, I should add that Universal is not talking to Ron Moore or David Eick or anybody behind the current incarnation of the series (or its prequel,
Caprica). Instead, the studio is
quietly approaching original creator Glen A. Larson about a complete, modern revamp of the series for the movie screens.
I'm left scratching my head on this one. Do we need another series revamp so soon after this series? Wouldn't that confuse casual viewers, particularly those that may start watching
Caprica? Also, while I appreciate involving the creator in the concept, Larson hasn't been a big influence in television since the 80's.
I'm wondering if the studio went to Moore and company for a big-screen adaption and they said "no", so they went to Larson. The original pilot of
Battlestar Galactica was first released as a movie. That could have been a factor in that choice.
Of course, this is all just rumor for now.

Here's more proof that Sci Fi Channel loves nerds – and their money. A limited edition "uncut and unrated" version of the
Caprica pilot will be released on DVD April 21. That means fans can get an early look at the
Battlestar Galactica prequel series starring Eric Stoltz and Esai Morales, which is slated to premiere on Sci Fi in 2010. The DVD list price is $26.98, according to Sci Fi. Great news, right? It gets better.
Because of the early DVD release, fans might get a chance to influence the development of the series. In a release, Mark Stern, Executive VP of Original Programming for Sci Fi, says the DVD release "affords the creative team an unprecedented chance to get viewers feedback before production on the
Caprica series begins this summer."

A new clip from the
Caprica pilot hit the web today. The clip features Eric Stoltz's Daniel Graystone touring a "Cyber Club," where people go to dance, drink, and offer the occasional virgin sacrifice to the goddess of the underworld. There's also a fight club, group sex rooms, and fantasy killing rituals. Hmm, maybe humanity did deserve to get nuked after all.
SciFi's upcoming
Battlestar Galactica prequel is slated to hit the air with a two-hour movie in 2010. Judging by this clip, Ron Moore and crew are ready to go to some very dark places with this series, but only time will tell if
BSG fans are ready to follow them.
