Top Chef: Thunderbirds

MIchael V. prepares an American favorite - bacon!
(S0603)
Bacon might be one of America's unhealthiest foods. But as comedian Jim Gaffigan pointed out in his last special, bacon also holds awesome powers that are far beyond the grasp of mere mortals.

Given enough patience and time, bacon can move mountains, eradicate poverty and help scientists discover a lifelong cure for herpes simplex one.

Bacon's divine power proved itself once again in last night's Top Chef.

Kelly Choi: Top Chef Masters bickering was "unnecessary"

Kelli Choi is host of Bravo's elite cooking show, Top Chef Masters.Kelly Choi grew up in a family and a culture build around food -- an upbringing that made her a natural gourmand and foodie.

That led Choi to a career on local New York City TV as an expert on Manhattan restaurants and global cuisine. Her popularity in the Big Apple led Bravo to sign her up as the host of the ultimate exhibition of culinary competition, Top Chef Masters.

The daughter of Korean grocers, Choi grew up in and around her parents' store. Choi's friends and family would gather to share, enjoy and discuss food. So, her gig as host brings her back home to her roots.

I spoke with Choi as Top Chef Masters fans prepared for the series' season finale on August 19.

Bethenny Frankel does killer impressions (and not just of Jill Zarin)

Bethenny Frankel - Real Housewives of New York CityThe ladies of The Real Housewives of New York City are, needless to say, a colorful bunch. The Bravo franchise seems to have hit its stride, with each cast of Housewives providing their own flavor. But in comparison to Orange County and Atlanta, the ladies of New York seem especially weird. Perhaps it's apropos to their all living in a city with crazy people at every corner, but whatever the case may be, these gals are bonkers.

Sure, the show may just be a well-delivered product of sneaky producers and menacing editors, but somebody's doing something right in bringing out the bizarre nuances of Jill, LuAnn, Alex, Ramona, and Bethenny - although she, of the whipsmart one-liners and catchphrases, seems to be the crowd favorite (judging by ... conversations I've had with people).

What will it take for me to stop watching Real Housewives?

Housewives
A whole heck of a lot, apparently. And not because it's a so-bad-it's-good kind of a show. It may have started out that way, but now, after four seasons and multiple spin-offs, has just veered into the worst kind of train-wreck TV.

This past season, the fourth of The Real Housewives of the OC, has gotten unconscionably shallow and I still can't click way. I'm not going to argue that the show wasn't always that way, but watching the housewives in this season's first episode, not just ogle new addition Gretchen's breasts, but physically poke them (to test, what? elasticity? bounce?) was perhaps a new low.

So, the question I keep asking myself is why am I still watching this show?

Production company asks for injunction against airing Hey Paula

Paula AbdulPaula Abdul's new reality series, Hey Paula may never make it on the air if Pilgrim Films and Television has anything to say about it.

In 2004, Pilgrim's producers reportedly met with Paula to discuss creating a talk show together. Pilgrim claims the original talk show concept was scrapped, but a new concept emerged -- a reality show based on Paula's crazy professional and personal life, called Hey Paula. However, the project soon "fell apart" over Paula's demand for "editorial control." That allegedly didn't stop Paula from secretly taking the show to Bravo behind Pilgrim's back.
