New TV on DVD releases today
Christian group targets Will and Grace
These people are starting to
make Christians look like they don't have a sense of humor. The same group that yelled and
screamed about The Book of Daniel's pill-popping priest who conversed with Jesus is now hollering about
Will and Grace. It's not the homosexual characters on the show that they're taking issue with, or the constant
feeling-up of characters, or the references to alcoholism and pill-popping. They're all upset over the plans for a Britney Spears cameo in which she
plays a Christian chef. They don't like that her character has a cooking segment called Cruci-fixins. The
group, called The American Family Association, accuses NBC of mocking Christ's crucifixion and says the network will
"further denegrate Christianity" by airing the episode the night before Good Friday. On its website, this group is urging NBC affiliates to boycott the episode,
just like it got some affiliates
to do for Daniel. NBC has already started back-peddling, saying that the episode isn't even written yet so the
name of the cooking segment isn't exactly set in stone.God, I'd love to see NBC stick to its guns and stay with Cruci-fixins. That's funny, y'all. Plus, it'll probably help the floundering show's ratings as it ends its run on NBC this spring.
Book of Daniel to be streamed online
Coming shortly after the show got axed from
NBC's broadcast schedule comes word
the unaired episodes of The Book of Daniel will be streamed online for the next three weeks. The episode that
would have aired last Friday is now available on NBC.com, with the two remaining
episodes appearing for a week each beginning this Friday. Click the "Videos" portion of NBC's site and you'll
find it. As Joseph Jaffe says here it's an
interesting opportunity for networks who cancel shows on the broadcast side of things to test the viability of moving
these shows to an on-demand model. That way they're not reliant on the whims of advertisers but simply to the demands
of the marketplace.The Book of Daniel: Acceptance
After last week's premiere where we got to meet all the
players amidst a blizzard of plots and subplots, this week things settled down a bit for The Book of Daniel.
We last left Reverend Daniel Webster' getting the news that the stolen money ($3.2 million) that was earmarked for the
construction of a new school has been located, but the situation becomes a bit sticky when the Mafia-connected priest
tells him that if the construction job does not go to Vaporelli Construction, then there is no found money. Daniel
spends a good bit of time wrestling with the question and, in a case of mistaken identity, agrees to the deal. It
seems that Daniel has offered his acceptance to the situation, but he (obviously) has his doubts about going along
with this extortion.

Another station cans Book of Daniel
Controversial new television show The Book of Daniel has been removed from the lineup
of Nashville's NBC affiliate after the show drew thousands of complaints from irate viewers, incuding letters faxed in
on church letterhead. The show has now been pulled from seven network affiliates, mostly in the South. The
Book of Daniel, which features Aidan Quinn as a pill-popping Episcopalian priest with a gay son, has drawn the
fire of conservative Christian groups, most notably the American Family Association, which is encouraging members
through its website to protest the show and threaten boycotts of advertisers.

What's on tonight: new Monk, Dancing results, and lots of Bond
FOX is all new tonight, with Bernie Mac at 8pm, Malcolm at 8:30, and then
Trading Spouses: Meet Your New Mommy. - ABC has the results show for Dancing With The Stars, followed by new eps of In Justice and 20/20.
- CBS has new eps of Ghost Whisperer at 8, Close To Home at 9, and Numb3rs at 10.
- NBC has a new ep of one of my guilty pleasures at 8, Most Outrageous Moments, followed by a repeat ep, and then new eps of Dateline and The Book of Daniel.
- The WB has a repeat of What I Like About You at 8, followed by new eps of Living With Fran, Reba, and Twins, while UPN has a new ep of WWE Friday Night Smackdown at 8.
- Remember the "Ross and Rachel take a break" eps of Friends? Two of them are on TBS at 8, followed by Jennifer Lopez in The Wedding Planner.
- AMC has Thunderball at 8, which is a good Bond flick but not the best.
- Also at 8: HGTV has a new episode of Get Color, followed by new eps of Design Remix, Double Take, and Freestyle.
- HBO has Denzel Washington in Man On Fire. It's on at 8 too.
- At 9, Nickelodeon has a new episode of Danny Phantom.

- Sundance has the movie Slam. It's on at 9 too.
- USA has a new episode of Monk at 10.
- Also at 10: the Travel Channel has a new ep of Weird Travels titled "Creepy Creatures."
- Last night I stayed up late to watch the 1984 comedy Top Secret! Which reminds me that TCM has Elvis in Jailhouse Rock tonight at 10.
- At 10:30, there's a repeat ep of Dinner For Five, with Bruce Campbell, Rob Zombie, and Roger Corman. Hey, is this show still in production?
- At 11, A&E has a new episode of Random 1.
- More Bond flicks: A&E has Tomorrow Never Dies at midnight, and AMC has For Your Eyes Only at 1:15.
Was Daniel a dud?
Despite all the
publicity leading up to Friday's premiere of The Book of Daniel on NBC, it still didn't do so hot in the
ratings. The two-hour premiere, which aired from 9-11 pm on Friday, averaged about 9 million viewers. That's fewer than
Close to Home, Numb3rs, In Justice, and 20/20, which all aired against
Daniel on CBS and ABC. In Justice and 20/20 barely beat Daniel, each with a little more than
9 million viewers.I watched The Book of Daniel out of pure curiosity. I like Aidan Quinn and I wanted to give the guy a chance. Plus, I wanted to see whether all the ruckus was justified. It wasn't.

The Book of Daniel: Temptation and Forgiveness
In the middle of his sermon, Reverend Daniel Webster (Aidan Quinn) poses this question to the congregation:
"If there were no temptation, how can there be redemption?"
The Book of Daniel made its much anticipated debut Friday night on NBC with a two-hour episode. If you saw it, you know there were so many subplots that trying to recap them here will make your (and my) head spin.
In a nutshell, Daniel's life is a complicated one, to say the least. This Episcopalian man of the cloth has to deal with his teenage daughter (Grace) being arrested for dealing pot, to having a gay son (Peter) that causes confusion for him, to having an adopted son from China (Adam) who pokes fun at his Asian features and heritage, to having a neurotic wife taken to having martinis as soon as noon passes, to having a female bishop critiquing his Sunday sermons, to finding out his brother-in-law has embezzled $3.2 million from the church, to dealing with a stiff and wooden father who happens to be a bishop, to his mother suffering from Alzheimer's, to interacting with a Mafia-connected Catholic priest. (I could go further but I think you get the general idea.)

Jack and Jill and Jesus: TV Guide in 60 seconds
Anthony Lapaglia's Jack gets some action on
Without A Trace, as he strikes up a romance with Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. Lapaglia says that the two are
at "a hot dog stand" and he "plants a big one on her." I'm assuming that means a kiss, and
"hot dog stand" isn't a euphamism for something else.- Matt Roush reviews the controversial new series The Book Of Daniel (he also likes the season opener of Battlestar Galactica but calls Four Kings "a generic dud.")

Christians try to get Book of Daniel cancelled
Surely, you've seen the ads for
NBC's big new midseason dramedy, The Book of Daniel? The one where the Vicodin-addicted Episcopal priest talks
to a bum-hippie Jesus about his drug dealing daughter and his gay son and the fact that his lesbian secretary is
sleeping with his sister-in-law? You know, the one that looks like a piece of overcooked, self-conciously
"quirky" Ally McBealist crap? As Adam pointed out yesterday morning, the American
Family Association is even more excited about Daniel than I am, although for entirely different reasons; in
fact, they're calling for NBC to cancel the show before it even airs. In a statement sent to their members, AFA said,
"It would be beneficial to all if NBC showed a little more respect for Christians who believe the Bible."
They're asking their members to bombard the network with letters until they get their way. Meanwhile, NBC has fought
back with a statement of their own,
predictably insisting that if we try it, we might like it. "We're confident that once audiences view this quality
drama themselves, they'll appreciate this thought-provoking examination of one American family," the network
says. Hmmmm... an absurdly reactionary organization is trying to get an apparently crap show canceled before it debuts. That's just silly. Then again, it is, by all appearances, a crap show. What side to take?
AFA goes after Daniel
Who didn't see this one coming from about twelve million miles away? The Book of Daniel, the new
series about a pill-popping priest who hangs out with Jesus and has a son who is gay and a daughter who sells pot has
come under fire from the American Family Association. The AFA's favorite targets are shows or companies which they see
as "gay friendly." The group most recently went after the Ford Motor Company for advertising in LGBT mags.
They're urging a boycott of the show and its advertisers. I'm sure they have a few words for Jesus, too, and his
decision to appear on this show.
