I entered the
NYTVF panel discussion about advertising with some trepidation. After all, I love TV, but I hate commercials. In fact, I'm in love with my DVR because it allows me to fast forward through all that garbage. And I really love watching my shows on DVD because I don't have to worry about about commercials at all.
However, I also realize that much of my beloved television programming (and now) internet content wouldn't be possible without the support of its sponsors. Advertising is an unfortunate necessary evil. For bloggers it means the difference between getting paid (like here at TV Squad) or diligently toiling away without any compensation with the unselfish commitment of a
Harry Potter house elf.

The time of year is upon us when there are just way too many things happening on the west coast, and we simply don't have all of the resources necessary to keep up with them all -- and that's why we're once again putting the call out for another addition to our fine team of bloggers.
As is sometimes the case, we've got some specific requirements you need to fulfill before we consider your application. Read on below for details.

American Idol is a show whose popularity and success hinges on some well-kept secrets and big-ass surprises. Which is why the Top 24 Finalists will have to put their MySpace pages on temporary hiatus. There will be no blogging allowed during this part of the competition.
Part of me is disappointed by this rule. I love the behind-the-scenes first hand accounts that blogging provides. But I also understand why the producers need to be such a bunch of paranoid control freaks. Thirty-three million of us are not going to continue to tune in each week if too much vital information is leaked on the Internet.

By now you've probably seen it: The reflective cover of the current
Time magazine, touting the Person of the Year to be...
You.What the hell do they mean by that? Well, they figure that because of Web 2.0 applications, from blogging to Facebook to MySpace to YouTube, the public at large is largely responsible for shaping how the world informs and entertains itself. To demonstrate what they were talking about, they interviewed 15 people who have made a name for themselves online, from the
guy who ratted out Mark Foley to
the guy that Senator George Allen called "Macaca" to
the woman who reviews seemingly every book on Amazon.com. YouTube gets a lot of play here, with
a big profile of founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen.

As some of you may have noticed, we've slowly (and somewhat silently) been bringing on new
writers for TV Squad. Some of these people applied the old fashioned way, others were referred or carried over from other Weblogs, Inc. blogs. But it's been quite some time since we've actually put a call out for new talent -- until now.
In this case we've got some specifics you need to fulfill before we consider you. Read on below for details.

Ken Levine has a great post about the killing off of popular TV characters, and talks about how the unexpected death of Henry Blake on M*A*S*H really stunned people.
- Aaron Barnhart has the press release NBC sent out, announcing that DirecTV had picked up the Sleuth Channel and its 15 million subscribers. That's the same amount of subscribers that TRIO had when DirecTV dropped that channel.
- Entertainment Weekly's PopWatch blog recounts what must have been an odd episode of Live with Regis and Kelly, with Vince Vaughn (subbing for Reege) talking about a childhood car accident, Kelly talking about her son breaking his arm earlier this week, and guest Denis Leary talking about how his dog died by eating 27 pounds of deer meat.
- Reality Blurred blog is reporting that the cast for Surreal Life 8 will include Randy "Macho Man" Savage, Phil Hellmuth, Playmate Tina Jordan, and Type O Negative's Peter Steele.

George
Clooney is upset. Well, that's not really news, as he gets upset about a lot of things. This time he's
miffed about a blog entry on Arianna Huffington's website, which he
claims he did not write.
According to CNN, the recent Academy award
winner and former star of ER and, um, ER, says he did not post a profanity-laced blog entry on
Huffington's website, though he gave her permission to use a compilation of his quotes on the war in Iraq from past
interviews. The post itself criticized the Democrats for stamping down their views and their criticism of the
Bush administration in the months before the invasion of Iraq began.
Clooney claimed Huffington's blog was
misleading, while Huffington denied any wrongdoing in a rebuttal on her
website.
I smell a new movie, produced and directed by George. I'll warm up my DVD
player.

Tack on one more to the
list of Internet-saavy things
the networks are all over: blogging. We've already seen it with a few shows, like
The Shield and
How I Met your Mother, and now
comes one more: Grey's Anatomy. Though the Barney blog is fictional,
Grey
Matter reads much like
The Shield's blog, with musings from the writers of
the show.
Hey networks -- more, please!
