ABC and CBS reveal more pilot casting news

Monica PotterI mentioned the other day that Harold Perrineau had joined the CBS pilot Demons. They've now cast the main character, Gus, and the winner is Ron Eldard. If you were paying attention, you might have seen him in the short-lived Men Behaving Badly or Blind Justice. Otherwise, think of him as the paramedic with issues that was dating Carol early in the ER run. It's not the best piece of casting I've ever seen. Eldard has never proven that he can be the dramatic lead for a show, but stranger things have happened.

Meanwhile, over at CBS, Hugh Jackman (Wolverine!) is producing something called Viva Laughlin. Lloyd Owen (Miss Potter) will star as a family man trying to open a casino in Laughlin, NV. Word is that Jackman will appear in the pilot and may have a recurring role on the series. Given just that bit of knowledge, I'm intrigued by the possibilities.

Look here to find out when your shows will return from holiday break

Schedule BoySchedule Boy has returned! Yes, yes, many of you know me as the dashingly attractive Rich Keller, reviewer of such shows as Bones and ER. However, sometimes I need to put on my mask and cape (and nothing else) and take on the guise of Schedule Boy in order to give you, the holiday-exhausted TV Squad readers, a chance to see where season premiere dates will fall or what time your favorite horror movie will air on Halloween night. It's a thankless job, but someone has to do it!

This time around I have been given the task to list the days when your favorite (and not-so favorite) shows will return from the holiday break. Also included in this list will be those shows having late starts to their season, like According to Jim, and those that are coming back from mid-season finales, like Psych. Please be warned that these dates may change, and we will try to adjust the schedule accordingly when we find out about them. So, get your decoder rings out and let's begin . . . right after the jump, that is. Schedule Boy, away!

ABC pulls Help Me Help You

Help Me Help YouRemember that post I did this past weekend where I called Help Me Help You the "least publicized show of 2006?" Well, now we know why ABC hasn't publicized it at all: it looks like they're pretty much done with it.

According to Cynopsis, the Ted Danson comedy has been pulled from next week's schedule, running back-to-back episodes of Big Day instead. Now, that could have been done because of the holiday, but they could have also scheduled a repeat, too. Anyway, the article states that ABC hasn't announced anything official, but there's also "no word" on when it's returning to the schedule.

As I pointed out in my Sunday post on the show, the ratings have been dismal, especially since Dancing with the Stars ended. So this isn't a big surprise.

Smell like television's leading ladies

Lauren Graham Gilmore GirlsNot every woman can look like Salma Hayek, but every woman can smell like her. Just in time for the holidays, InsideBayArea.com has released a list of the fragrances favored by television's leading ladies. Not everyone understands the appeal of expensive perfume, and nobody wants to be around someone doused in it. Perfume is an indulgence when you're penny pinching, but I've got to admit that it's one of my own weaknesses.

As you might expect, the perfumes on the list are ridiculously pricey, but at least, no one is wearing Britney's Curious for Women. I personally can't afford any of these scents - even in the 1 oz. bottle - but I can certainly "test" them at Sephora. Here are some list highlights: The Gilmore Girls' Lauren Graham wears Fracas by Robert Piguet; Men in Trees' Anne Heche wears Amaze by IsaDora; Ugly Betty's Salma Hayek wears Narciso Rodriguez's For Her; Big Day's Marla Sokoloff wears Trish McEvoy's #9; and Brothers & Sisters' Calista Flockhart wears be by becker.eshaya.

ABC bumps Lost to 10 pm

lostWhen it returns from a 13-week hiatus, Lost will have a new time slot. ABC has bumped the sci fi/drama back one hour to 10 pm. The reasoning behind this, according to Variety, is the unstoppable power that is American Idol. Lost has consistently finished second to CBS's Closer to Home Criminal Minds this fall and apparently ABC can't stomach the thought of coming in third during the 9 pm hour on Wednesday nights. Last year, Lost took a pretty big hit on Wednesdays once American Idol started up. The new Wednesday schedule makes it pretty obvious that ABC is bowing down to American Idol.

Here's the new Wednesday schedule at ABC:

Big Day to premiere on ABC November 28

Big Day
Remember way back in August, when Ugly Betty was moved from Fridays to Thursdays? Even though it was only two months ago, people have already forgotten the names of the two new shows that were displaced by the move. Well, here's a refresher: one of the shows was called Big Day, a serialized comedy that takes an entire season to explore the ins and outs of a young couple's wedding day. According to this press release, the show will finally debut on Tuesday, November 28 at 9. That was the time slot that was reserved for The Knights of Prosperity before ABC decided to delay its premiere until midseason. Considering how little-regarded Big Day show was when ABC sent the pilots out over the summer (Anna said in her preview, "I don't think I laughed at all."), it seems like Knights might end up back in that timeslot sometime around Christmas.

Oh, the other displaced show, Notes from the Underbelly, has yet to be rescheduled. Don't rush with that one either, ABC.

Ugly Betty move shifts two shows off fall schedule

Notes from the UnderbellyYesterday, when I reported that ABC moved Ugly Betty from Fridays to Thursdays, I wasn't sure of the fate of the two shows it was replacing, Big Day and Notes from the Underbelly (right). According to Richard Huff of the New York Daily News, the two serialized comedies will find a home on the schedule on either Tuesday or Wednesday, after Dancing with the Stars and its results show are done. It's just as well; Underbelly doesn't seem like it has staying power, anyway, and from what I've heard, Big Day isn't that special, either. ABC made the right choice by putting a stronger show in the more high-profile timeslot.

So what's going to take Ugly Betty's vacated Friday spot? A second episode of America's Funniest Videos, that's what. So that means this fall we're going to be seeing Tom Bergeron four nights a week, since he hosts both AFV and Dancing. Who knew he'd become the network's next Regis Philbin?

TV Squad previews ABC's new shows

abc logoNow that NBC and CBS have us all excited about its fall season, it's time to move along to the screener DVDs we've been receiving from ABC. While we're not allowed to technically "review" each new show, we can give you a short preview with our initial thoughts.

For ABC, we're covering: The Knights of Prosperity (formerly Let's Rob...), Help Me Help You, The Nine, Big Day, Notes from the Underbelly, Six Degrees, Ugly Betty, and Men in Trees. (We'll do a Part 2 of the ABC previews once we receive the remaining shows.)
