Now Sesame Street takes on the iPod

Sesame Street did a Mad Men spoof recently, and now they're spoofing another contemporary pop culture icon: the iPod.

In this clip, the Muppets are seen wearing headphones and dancing in silhouette a la various commercials for Apple's iPod. Steve Jobs called and is going to sue PBS. Just kidding!

Sunny day, everything's not-so-A-OK for the Sesame Workshop

Sesame StreetIf the very thought of the fledgling economy makes you just a little bit sad, get some Kleenex and a shoulder to cry on because you're about to bawl your eyes out.

If you are the kind of heartless bastard who won't cry at the discovery of this news, you should. Get a fork, poke yourself in the eyes, and let nature take its course.

The Sesame Workshop, the non-profit organization that created the world's greatest kids show in the history of whatever, is laying off a huge chunk of its staff.

Seven of the worst TV Christmas specials - VIDEOS

Where would we be without the hallowed television Christmas special? We would be engaged in enthralling conversations with relatives who like to give the backstory about the gall bladder operation pictures they still carry in their wallet. We would be playing defense against every breakable item in the house while the neighbor's kids get enough sugar in their systems to power the Space Shuttle. We would not only have to muster the courage to taste Grandma's homemade rum and Kahula fruitcake, but also to pretend that we like it without our stomach turning inside out, crawling up our esophagus and out of our mouth.

Even if those scenarios will be true for you on Dec. 25, I offer you my pity as my Christmas gift. Plus, you still would rather spend it listening to ol' Uncle Hernia Scar than watching one of these holiday hams.

Sesame Street's 39th season starts today

Sesame StreetI am older than Sesame Street.

That's the first thing that went through my head when I saw that the show starts its 39th season today on PBS (check local listings for time). This means that I must have started watching the show when I was around four years old, which seems strange to me, but I've learned never to argue with Bert & Ernie.

Sesame Street is going to be awesome - VIDEO

Will Arnett on Sesame StreetThe new season of Sesame Street is right around the corner and, while I normally wouldn't give it a second thought, I am unusually excited right now. No, this isn't a snarky rant about how I've been driven to children's TV because of the sorry state of grown-up programming. Sesame Street's 39th season, starting August 11th, looks like it has a lot of fun lined up not only for the pre-schoolers but parents as well. I already posted Feist's upcoming special take on "1 2 3 4", but I had no idea how many amazing guest appearances were coming. Just check out this star-filled highlight reel after the jump.

Sesame Street makes a deal with New Balance

Cookie MonsterCan you tell me how to get, how to get a pair of the New Balance Sesame Street sneakers?

That's right, the long-running PBS children's show has made a mega-deal with the shoe company to create a line of sneakers for infants and grade school kids. The infant sneakers will cost $43 (cough) and the grade school sneakers will be $65. The shoes will be available in major chain retail stores and the shoes will also be pushed during episodes of Sesame Street.

Can you tell Anderson Cooper how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?

Anderson Cooper, Oscar the GrouchIf you've ever wanted to see CNN's Anderson Cooper report the news from a trash can, today's your lucky day.

Cooper will be a guest today on PBS' Sesame Street. Check out the pic on the right. That's Cooper inside a trash can, next to Oscar The Grouch and his trash can. He'll be reporting for GNN: The Grouch News Network.

Sesame Street DVDs are NOT for kids!

Sesame StreetThis may come as a shock to some parents and kids, but the new Sesame Street: Old School DVDs that were released this week come with the following disclaimer at the beginning, read by a cartoon character:

"Welcome to Sesame Street Nostalgia. I am Bob, your host, and I want you to know that these early Sesame Street episodes are intended for grown-ups and may not meet the needs of today's pre-school child."

Um...huh?

Law and Order: SVU visits Sesame Street

Sesame StreetYeah, I know, it sounds like the idea for an SNL, Mad TV, or Conan O'Brien sketch, but it actually happened on yesterday's season premiere of Sesame Street. Here's the video.

Now, I'm all for edgy humor and irreverence, even on kids shows, but I think this is an odd choice. I mean, Law and Order: SVU is all about sex crimes, many of them involving children, and that's the show that Sesame Street decides to lampoon? Will kids even get it, or is this something more for parents (I assume the latter). It's called Special Letters Unit, but it's still a bit odd, though enjoyable. They even use the show's sound (they call it "chung chung"), and that's the original cast doing the voices for their puppets too.

Next on Zoom: a tribute to Deadwood.

Update: You might have trouble playing the video (not sure why, though I know YouTube is down right now). Here are some screen caps and more from the episode.

Sesame Street passes on Russell Crowe

russell crowe sesame streetHe may be really famous and the father of a young son, but apparently Russell Crowe is not child-friendly. The producers of Sesame Street have decided not to add Crowe to their long list of celebrity guests. He has a well-documented history of angry outbursts, including a recent incident with a hotel telephone, and of public drunkenness, which doesn't fly with Sesame Street. One producer said he's not a great role model for kids, "although I am sure our writers could come up with a nice piece about dealing with emotions."

They have a point. That Elmo could totally throw him into a fit.

Big Bird and Oscar's reward

carroll spinneyCaroll Spinney, the man who performs both Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch on Sesame Street, will receive a lifetime achievement award at the Daytime Emmys in April. Spinney was with the series from the very beginning, appearing as Big Bird in the first scene of the first episode. Jim Henson and Sesame Street writer Jon Stone came up with the idea for Oscar after encountering a grumpy waiter at a restaurant in Manhattan called Oscar's Tavern. Spinney based Oscar's voice on a gravel-voiced cab driver who once picked him up to take him back to the Sesame Street set.
