Is this the new, not-so-Ugly Betty?

Ugly BettyAllison mentioned last week that Ugly Betty might be getting a makeover this season. Now Just Jared has snapped some exclusive pics of America Ferrera on the set.

Is this the new, non-ugly Betty? If she gets a makeover, will it still be Ugly Betty? Will the ugly now refer to how she acts inside? Hmmm...

If Ugly Betty gets a makeover ... will she still be Betty?

ugly_betty_abc_america_ferrera
If they give the title character a radical change, as sources are reportedly seriously considering at ABC's Ugly Betty, does that include a title change to reflect the alteration? In other words, will Ugly Betty be the same show if Betty becomes a beauty?

Mike Ausiello is reporting that ABC has focus grouped a couple of scenes from the upcoming season in which Betty is remodeled to look more fashionable in the fashion world. As Mode's new associate features editor, she opts for some fancy new outfits and a less eclectic, eccentric look. She's also had her hair, brows and makeup redone ... no doubt after a trip to Hilda's beauty salon.

Ralph Macchio to return to Ugly Betty

ralph macchio ugly betty

I swear, I get more TV news from Twitter these days than nearly anywhere else. To wit: I just found out a brand new piece of Ugly Betty casting news from one of the stars himself. Ralph Macchio, the erstwhile Karate Kid, who joined Betty at the beginning of last season, will be reprising his role in season 4.

He tweeted: "4 all inquiring about Ugly Betty. Just got official call that Archie will b back in Season 4. 4 how much, how long and when. Don't know yet."

What to expect in season 2 of Ugly Betty

Ugly BettyThe first season finale of ABC's Ugly Betty left us wondering if Bradford would really marry Wilhelmina, if Henry is the father of Charlie's baby, if almost half the cast was dead or not, and so much more. This very good finale had a lot of TV fans speculating all summer. Speculate no more as we have gathered for you a series of spoilers that will reveal the fate of most characters and what is in store for them.

Spoilers ahead!

Ugly Betty: In or Out

Rebecca Romjin Ugly Betty(S01E13) Move over, Zarf! Alexis is here. I think I may need to go back to Soap Opera 101 because I was not expecting that little bombshell. And, was it just me, or did Christina's hair get higher when she decided to sell out? What a seriously sudsy week on our favorite Golden Globe-winning comedy and/or musical.

Let's start with the drama. Lines are being drawn at Mode care of Ms. Wilhelmina Slater and the woman who we now know to be her accomplice - Daniel's brother Alex, who apparently didn't die jumping out of a helicopter on a pair of skis. He just fell on his penis and decided to have it removed. (Do you think if men knew they could have a sex change operation and come out looking like Mystique that they'd do it just to fondle their own breasts?)

Ugly Betty: Sofia's Choice

Ugly Betty Sofia's Choice(S01E12) And, so, Salma Hayek's arc comes to an end. We'll miss you, Salma. We'll miss you and your ripe, luscious... acting ability. Sofia broke Daniel's heart, and he's gone off the sadness end. Ted broke Wilhelmina's heart, and she's gone off the bitchy end. It's not going to be pretty at Mode, and will Betty even be back? She quit MYW, but doesn't Amanda have her old job at Mode? With Daniel gone, who is going to take Betty back? All this heartbreak, and I'm worried about Betty's paycheck. Just goes to show you where my sympathies lie.

Ugly Betty: Fake Plastic Snow

Ugly Betty Fake Plastic Trees(S01E10) I don't have a whole lot of fancy observations to make here, folks. That was just some freaking good television. Those last couple of scenes were heartbreakers, and on a purely formal level, the writing was flawless.

Let's look at the penultimate scene at the Christmas party. I haven't seen a voice-over used that well since the Buffy "Passion" episode when evil Angel provided the soundtrack to Willow collapsing in grief at the news of Jenny Calendar's death. Entirely different circumstances here obviously, but could there have been a more perfect, tie-it-up-with-a-bow backdrop to Betty and Henry's wordless exchange than Daniel's phone call to Sofia? Then, boom, we see poor Betty's heart squashed right under that lingerie model's stiletto.

What baby boomers learned from TV

All in the FamilyNewsweek's November 13th issue features a story on what television taught baby boomers. Apparently, it first taught them how to buy a Davy Crockett cap and shotgun. Then, however, things got more complicated. All in the Family. M*A*S*H. Good Times. The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Roots. "What boomers ultimately took from early TV was a collective sense of irony." The article isn't entirely convincing in this argument, but it does level a pointed criticism about television today.

Modern TV, according to Newsweek, has lost its edge. "The most popular shows are still crime procedurals (CSI) or soaps (Grey's Anatomy) - slick and sexy, but not about much. The reality shows American Idol and Dancing with the Stars are so retro, they're practically The Lawrence Welk Show. When The Unit or 24 does dare to focus on something like the war on terror, their take is uncritically gung-ho - no network today would risk satire on the level of M*A*S*H."

Ugly Betty gets a full season on ABC

ugly bettyABC has given a full season order to Ugly Betty, the highest-rated new show on television so far this fall. And it's about time. The comedy has consistently been a close second to CBS' Survivor during the 8 pm time slot on Thursday nights, averaging 15.3 million viewers.

Last year, ABC had all sorts of stuff including Alias, Dancing with the Stars, and American Inventor in the 8 pm time slot and they averaged only 7 million viewers for the season. The press release announcing the pick-up of Ugly Betty says the show has increased ratings in that time period by 92% in key demographics.
