Some good and bad Battlestar Galactica news

battlestar galacticaSo, you've been enjoying those "Razorettes" we've been posting here lately, have you? Good. Good. There will be more of those in the coming weeks. And... AND... then, the Battlestar Galactica: Razor movie! Woo!

I've also heard some other potentially good news lately regarding our beloved series. It turns out that, due to the looming writers strike and how it could put a halt to new television for a while, there are reports that NBC may consider airing old episodes of Battlestar Galactica... on NBC!

OK, now for the bad news...

Battlestar Galactica panel at Sci Fi's digital press tour, part two - VIDEO

grace park
I'm finally through what's been a surreal yet exhausting couple of days in Vancouver. On my long trip back to Boston, I'll be preparing some stuff for you all to read, mostly dealing with how, as a fan of these shows, what it's like to step foot on the actual filming locations and touch things that, until now, we've only seen on television.

As promised, here's the second part of the digital press tour panel with cast members of Battlestar Galactica. I'm hoping to get the Atlantis and Eureka (and Flash Gordon) panels up within the next couple of days, as long as my new copy of the films work this time around. Enjoy!

TV Squad attends the Battlestar Galactica fan blowout: Part two

Battlestar Galactica: the ticket
Okay, we're back with the second half of Wednesday night's Battlestar extravaganza, and I think I've recovered most of my memories, got the feeling back in my writing hand, and decided I wasn't Cylon. For now.

After Lucy Lawless was done loosely emceeing the event, they opened up the floor to questions from the audience. Now, keep in mind that this event was really for the fans, so I expected a lot of "Um ... in Episode 9 from last season, Starbuck clearly had her pilot's wings on upside down ... does that have special meaning?" type questions, but thankfully all of the questions were stuff we thought we'd be asking ourselves, and only one person got up and asked for a job.

Battlestar, meet Warcraft - VIDEO

Some enterprising World of Warcraft players have recreated the opening to Battlestar Galactica using graphics and scenes from the game in a machinima video that ain't half bad. Gnomes, Cylons ... what's not to love? Although it really makes me jones for the show to return to the airwaves that much faster. When is a network going to finally get the right idea and put on an entire machinima show? When Red vs. Blue comes to television, then I'll stop ranting. Until then, enjoy a little BSG in your WSG.

Apologies to those of you who have never played WoW, as this won't make much sense. Just embrace the Battlestar love and run with it.

Out of the Blogosphere

  • Battlestar GalacticaHave you checked out Trivial TV? It's a great site about, well, TV of course. But it has an incredible search engine for TV schedules. Type in the day, month, and year and you can see the TV network schedules for that night! Very cool.
  • Paul Davidson has two TV-related posts up at his blog this week. One is Prison Break: The Drinking Game, and the other is about Battlestar Galactica and Lucy Lawless' fingernail.
  • Ken Levine has some thoughts on the O.J. book/TV special (written before they were canceled).
  • Entertainment Weekly's PopWatch blog says that John Stamos has pumped so much life into ER that the show just might be renewed for a 15th season.
  • A TV Guide reader tells Matt Roush that the reason why Jericho is a hit is because "it's Lost for Republicans."

Does anyone know Ausiello's five favorite shows?

Michael VartanSo I'm reading Michael Ausiello's column over at TV Guide.com, and he mentions that Michael Vartan was very, very close to joining the cast of one of his top five favorite shows...but then he doesn't mention the show's name! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...

Therefore, until he does reveal the name of the show and why Vartan didn't join, we're just going to have to sit here and guess. As a reader at the site points out, Ausiello's favs include Gilmore Girls, Veronica Mars, Lost, and Battlestar Galactica. The most obvious choice would be Lost, because, like Vartan's old show Alias, it's produced by J.J. Abrams. But is that too obvious? Not that it can't be obvious, of course. It would make sense that Abrams would offer him a role. I don't watch the other shows so I'm not sure what role he could have on those.

Readers?

Jack and Jill and Jesus: TV Guide in 60 seconds

  • Anthony Lapaglia's Jack gets some action on Without A Trace, as he strikes up a romance with Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio. Lapaglia says that the two are at "a hot dog stand" and he "plants a big one on her." I'm assuming that means a kiss, and "hot dog stand" isn't a euphamism for something else.
  • Matt Roush reviews the controversial new series The Book Of Daniel (he also likes the season opener of Battlestar Galactica but calls Four Kings "a generic dud.")

  • In the print edition: a Q and A with Jill Hennessey, a behind the scenes look at the Cold Case Sprinsteen episode, and a guest column from designer Isaac Mizrahi.

Battlestar Galactica primer, Part 4: The main players

adamaThe military leader of the humans is Commander Adama, who is as much of a dinosaur as the ship he commands. He had two sons, both pilots. Adama's favorite son was killed in a flight accident thus leaving Apollo as his remaining loving, but sometimes morally indignant, son of a somewhat hard to cuddle father.

A principle to the end of season tension is a promise he made early in the season to just rally the people around a joined hope was that he knew the way to Earth and the thirteenth tribe. It was later exposed by the President as a lie to one of the people he respects and loves most, Cara, to get her to break her loyalty to Adama and take on a quest for her. Cara's betrayal sends Adama into a rage of anger and orders the President arrested, and her presidency dissolved.

Battlestar Galactica primer, Part 3: The Cylons

cylonsThere are two kinds of Cylons, one is a shiny silver a cycloptic warrior type similar to the old series, and another than looks like humans - a couple models of which are extremely hot babes. Now, there are multiple versions of these human Cylons. Each is identical (within the "model") but each seems to have a slightly individual personality.

Oh yeah and they have sex, lots of pretty nymphomaniac room rumbling sex as a manipulative tool, they are robot clone Succubi, if you will. When they have their spines glow red - that's the key the viewer has  they are Cylon.

Battlestar Galactica primer, Part 2: The Humans

humansNow, this series their main homeworld now is a planet called Caprica, which the Cylons have managed to poison or something (pretty unclear) and wiped out nearly the entire human population like a exterminator sprays for bugs. Basically, the only humans left are those who were in space already, there were a few survivors on Caprica and the other . The planet is still intact, and there is a story line taking place on it and it's crawling in human-model Cylons, so it's not exactly clear HOW they managed to destroy the humans there. A few human characters from the one remaining Battlestar, the Gallactica, have either crashed or gone to Caprica in search of various things.

Earth is a fabled homeland, from where they came but have lost knowledge of. Most think it's a myth.

Battlestar Galactica primer, Part 1: The Story

battlestar1If you missed first season you missed a lot, but it's not to late to jump in and enjoy this great series full of seat gripping drama when season two starts tommorow, July 15th. Forget it's Science Fiction, if that helps you, it's got human drama to spare. You can watch the series online if you want, or I have prepared a primer to the series below:

There are no aliens in this spacebound saga, just a lonely pack or suriving humans trying to find Earth after theirs was destroyed by the very robots they created - the Cylons.

There were originally 13 tribes of humans that came from a place called Kobol, one tribe, the "lost tribe" went off to find their fabled holyland, Earth. The rest stayed, and propagated and soon, even Kobol was a forgotten mythical place. The human reace now consists of less than 250 thousand refugees on a series of spaceships now trying to find thier fabled lost tribe and a place to call home while trying to avoid further extinction by the Cylons, a robotic force that once was created by the Humans themselves. How the Cyclons destroyed the humans is never exactly said (that I recall, but it's in the orginal miniseries pilot) other than it seems to have wiped out about 99% of the humans the planet is still there, it's just an empty planet now other than being crawling with Cylons (see part 3 later).
