When you think of Michael Jackson, you also think of Weird Al

You can't think about the life and career of Michael Jackson without also thinking of Weird Al Yankovic. He did parodies of several Jackson songs, and while a lot of people like "Eat It," I've always liked "Fat," his take on Jackson's "Bad" (Al loves the food references, eh?). Yo, ding dong, man, ding dong!

Would YOU go to press tour?

TCA logoSo, the summer press tour is just about over. You've heard a lot of news come out of the tour, including news about who's going to be on Grey's Anatomy next year, news about the future of SNL, and why Mr. T has finally gotten rid of his gold chains.

But you've also heard tales from tired and cynical critics talking about fighting other critics for the microphone during a Gilmore Girls press conference, measuring the success of a show by the star's behavior on the tour, and putting up with carping networks and spin-happy executives. Then there are the crowds of critics surrounding the stars after a show's conference, parties where reporters try to get quotes from bored celebrities over loud music, and arranged tours of sets that seem more organized than tours of the Vatican. Oh, and all of this takes place over two-plus weeks in sweaty Burbank.

But we've also heard great tales of stars making good jokes at their own expense, and some interesting tidbits about how the fine treatment the critics receive from the networks.

The Simpsons: Bart's Girlfriend

simpsons(S06E07) To paraphrase a line from Woody Allen, the only love that truly lasts is unrequited love. That's a good way to sum up this episode where Bart falls in love with Reverend Lovejoy's daughter, Jessica. Another great summation comes from Lisa, who tells Bart, quite wisely, "It's naive to think you can change a person." Of course, this being The Simpsons, Lisa qualifies her advice by insisting the hunky boy who works at the library might be changed if only he gave Lisa a chance.

John K not impressed by animated sitcoms

family guyRen and Stimpy creator John Kricfalusi is one of those people I would love to sit in a room with and listen to his rants. Since I'm still working on my John K. Kidnapping Machine, I have to settle for his blog (Warning: NSFW), which he's been using to provide sage advice to people interested in becoming animators and cartoonists, and to slam the conventions of modern day animation, most notably on shows like The Simpsons, Family Guy, and South Park. On this post, he talks about how characters in old cartoons evolved at a much faster rate than characters on any of the aforementioned shows. As ideas grew and changed, so did characters. He writes: "You have to be raised in an uncreative environment in order to blindly accept how bland and crappy everything is today." Later in the post he adds: "No one should accept professional work that looks like they could do it themselves."

In the comments section of the same post, he further asserts that "the very concept of animated sitcoms is faulty in the first place." His argument is that no character in an animated sitcom has ever been able to emulate the best actors in the best sitcoms. And as pure animation, they don't exactly hold up, either.

New Oxygen series places ad on Craigslist

shannen dohertySo, last month I mentioned that Shannen Doherty would be returning to television with a new reality show in which she would help people put the kibosh on bad relationships, romantic and otherwise. Well, if you live in Los Angeles, are in a crappy relationship, and feel that Ms. Doherty is the only one who can set things straight, well, then you're insane. But you're also just the right person to answer this ad, which was placed on Craigslist to lure people to take part in the new series. And heck, both parties are compensated, so whether you're the "dumper" or the "dumpee" it all works out in the end.

The new series, Breaking Up with Shannen Doherty, will air on Oxygen.

Break up with Shannen Doherty

shannen dohertyShannen Doherty is teaming up with the creators of Scare Tactics once again for a new reality show of sorts called Breaking Up with Shannen Doherty. No, the show isn't about people dating and breaking up with the actress, but it is about people in cruddy relationships who aren't sure whether to pull the plug or not. Doherty goes undercover to survey the situation, then deicdes whether to help instigate a break up. Thirteen episodes of the new series will air on Oxygen, though I probably won't watch it since I grew bored with it in the time it took me to type that sentence describing it. Oh yeah, and I should point out that the show won't just focus on romantic relationships, but on any kind of bad relationship.

Whoopi's Criminal Intent

whoopiWhoopi Goldberg will be returning to television for the first time since Whoopi was on NBC a couple years ago. She'll be guest starring in an episode of Law and Order: Criminal Intent for May sweeps in a role that will most likely be recurring. Goldberg will play Chelsey Watkins, an evil foster mother who goes up against Detective Mike Logan, played by Chris Noth. Goldberg seems to be playing this up, insisting her role will be the baddest ever on Criminal Intent. I assume she means the character will be bad, not her acting. Though maybe she did mean her acting, and she's going for some kind of award for bad acting. You never really know, you know? This sounds promising, but Criminal Intent still remains my least favorite series of the Law and Order franchise.

A day in the life of the Man Who Doesn't Like Scrubs

ScrubsI walked across the street to the coffee shop. The girl behind the counter handed my muffin and breakfast tea to me, but as soon as our eyes met her expression turned sour.

"You're the Man Who Doesn't Like Scrubs, aren't you?"

"It's just not my cup of tea."

"No, THIS is your cup of tea!" she screamed, tossing my breakfast tea directly into my eyes.

I stumbled out of the coffee shop, where I was immediately attacked by three ducks and seven squirrels. "Oh god!" I screamed, "Even Mother Nature loves Scrubs!"
