I know, I know, you're thinking, those are the only two choices I get,
Happy Days and
Gilligan's Island? Yes, according to this poll over at AOL Television. For the past several weeks they've
pit various TV show theme songs against each other in a tournament, and the two finalists, for some reason, are
Happy Days theme and the
Gilligan's Island theme.
Now, it seems like these aren't the "best" theme songs, just the ones that readers and TV fans thought were the most iconic, or maybe it's the fact that they both have lyrics and that's what readers were looking for?

It's time for another TV list! Everybody loves lists, right? This one has
AOL picking the best TV shows of the 1960s.
As usual, it's a list that will get the debate going. Shows that without a doubt deserve to be on the list:
The Twilight Zone,
The Dick Van Dyke Show,
Star Trek,
The Andy Griffith Show,
I Spy, and
Bewitched.
Shows that without a doubt don't belong on the list:
The Flying Nun,
Hogan's Heroes, and
The Mod Squad. Sure, I enjoyed those shows when I was younger, but I really don't think they belong in the "best" category (I'll let you debate another show on the list,
Batman - great or just "campy" great?)

The networks are going to unleash their new fall schedules in a few weeks. Which new shows are in the running? Well, Juliana Margulies is going to be an attorney (again), Kelsey Grammer is going to be a Wall Street CEO who gets canned (you knew you were going to see at least one show with that premise this fall), Lauren Graham is going to be a self-help guru, Chevy Chase and
The Soup's Joel McHale are going to be community college students, and Thomas Jane is going to be ... well,
Hung.
AOL has a list of the 30 shows that have the best shot at being on our TV screens when the fall rolls around. Not all of the shows will make it, of course. Some we'll never see at all, unless the pilot episode is leaked online. I'm still ticked that
ABC didn't pick up Marlowe (with
Life on Mars star Jason O'Mara) a couple of season ago. The gallery is after the jump.

AOL has chosen the
best TV shows of the 1980s, and it's not a bad list. But I'm sure everyone reading this will have their own thoughts.
Sure, there are shows that were my favorites I'd like to see on the list, but those would be personal choices. The only problem I have is
where the shows place on the list. For example, is
Fraggle Rock really a better show than
Spenser: For Hire,
Miami Vice, and
Kate and Allie (even beyond the fact that it might be an odd show to compare to the other shows in the first place)? Is
Facts of Life better than
MacGyver?

Let's say you were trapped in an elevator with
Samantha Who? star Christina Applegate. Just you and her, stuck between the 7th and 8th floors of a high-rise, waiting for someone to come and get the elevator moving again so you won't be late for your Pilates class. What question would you ask her?
Well,
you have the chance to ask Applegate anything you want, and you don't even have to be trapped in a box. It's actually via
Outside The Box, over at AOL Television. You can submit a question to either Applegate, Jean Smart, or Barry Watson. If your question is chosen they'll even use your name and where you're from. You can even leave your question in the comments section below.
I have no idea if you'd want to ask Applegate about
Married...With Children or Smart about
Designing Women or Watson about 7th Heaven. But if you do ask Watson something about that show, I'd like to know if Jessica Biel is still going out with Justin Timberlake or if she's available.

Everybody loves lists, right? That's why I was attracted to this
AOL Television list of the best TV shows of the 1990s. Lots of good entries, some head-scratchers, and two incredibly glaring omissions.
You can immediately guess which shows are on the list:
Seinfeld,
The X-Files,
Sports Night,
Oz,
The Sopranos,
The Larry Sanders Show. There are some shows that I certainly would never put on such a list, but I can understand why they were chosen, such as
Party of Five,
Dawson's Creek, and
Ally McBeal. I think this is probably yet another example of "best" being confused with "popular" or "buzzworthy." Actually, I would never include
Ally McBeal on any sort of best of list.
But what really confuses me? There are two major shows, two shows that are often mentioned in a "best of" list (not just the 90s, but all-time) that aren't on the list! Can you guess what they are? Both appeared on NBC, and one of them was created by someone who created one of the above shows.

While many think television was built on a combination of electronics and imagination, I personally feel that a good portion of it has been constructed on a fine bed of catchphrases. From the earliest mention of "How sweet it is!" by Jackie Gleason to "That's what she said" from The Office, there probably hasn't been a year that a catchphrase hasn't graced the lips of the international viewing populace.
I'm sure many of you know those catchphrases well. But, do you know when they were first used, or by whom? If you do, then AOL Television's latest trivia quiz will be right up your alley.

Now that the fall season is hitting the two-month-old mark it's probably safe enough to start grading how some of the new and returning shows are doing. Our friends over at AOL Television have done such a thing and are giving you a chance to grade the TV shows as well.
Thirty shows were chosen for their fall TV scorecard and range from long-running shows such as CSI and ER to fresh out of the box programs like Pushing Daisies and Private Practice. The highest marks go out to House, which has reinvented itself this season with a set of new doctors for Greg House to abuse; Pushing Daises, which AOL TV describes as the best new show of the season; Ugly Betty, a show that has yet to enter a sophomore slump; Reaper, one of the brighter spots for the slumping CW network; Desperate Housewives, 30 Rock and Friday Night Lights.

AOL has an interesting slide show over at their TV section, about the cast of M*A*S*H and what they're up to now.
Of course, we know what happened to a few of them. McLean Stevenson and Larry Linville both passed away, and Alan Alda almost became President of the United States. But I wasn't aware that Wayne Rogers wasn't acting much anymore and had made a ton of money in the business world and was on the board of directors of a Fortune 500 company and appears on a FOX business show, Cashin' In.

In season 8 of Friends, Monica got new husband Chandler a costume. Was it a) A pink bunny; b) a soldier; or c) Superman?
If you know the answer to this, and seven other questions, you may be ready for the most recent AOL Television quiz, which tests you on what Halloween costumes some of your favorite TV characters wore. Just so you can be prepared, the quiz also asks what costume Buffy wore in the season four Halloween episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, what Star Wars character Dwight dressed up as in The Office, and what famous couple Brenda and Dylan emulated on Beverly Hills, 90210.
On the first go around I got six of the eight questions right. To test your skills click this link to begin. By the way, the costume that Chandler wore was . . . I'm not telling you. Take the quiz and guess for yourself! Bunch of lollygaggers.

Would you like to see Katie Couric without her makeup? Well, courtesy of AOL Television, here is your chance.
AOL TV has exclusive video of CBS's fast-rising news personality, sans makeup, as she prepares for her first 60 Minutes segment on the first responders of September 11th. The brief video shows Katie walking into work, not being recognized without her makeup, and performing some of the voice-over for her piece on the long-running news magazine. Also featured on AOL TV's All Eyes on Katie page is a slide show presentation on how Couric's decision to leave NBC's Today show for the CBS caused a domino effect on all three major networks.
I, for one, cannot wait for Katie to anchor her first news broadcast on September 5th. Not because I want to see how she does, but to stop the barrage of Couric news that we see and hear every day.

AOL has a great guide to the
May Sweeps, one of those times of the
year when the networks set their ad rates and all the guest stars come on the shows and/or the shows end in a
cliffhanger for the season. Take a look at what's happening on the night of May 14:
- 8pm: The
West Wing series finale (NBC, preceded by a one hour retrospective)
- 8pm: The Simpsons
season finale (FOX)
- 8pm: Survivor season finale (CBS - two hours and then a one hour
reunion show)
- Malcolm in the Middle series finale (FOX - not sure what time yet)
- 9pm: Law and Order: CI season finale (NBC)
Plus, they'll probably be episodes of
The
Sopranos and
Huff on that night.
What are
you going to be watching?
