Forbes picks the 100 most powerful celebrities

HeiglLike most red-blooded Americans, I love lists. We do a lot of them here at TV Squad and you'll see them at many sites every single day of the week. But I think that sometimes the lists go too far. I mean, what's the point of listing the top 50 or top 100 of something? Isn't that a little bit too many spots? Instead of getting down to the nitty-gritty (say, a top 10 or top 25), you ended up not only listing the best, worst, most, least (or whatever the list's topic is), you're just listing all of them.

Case in point, this Forbes list of the 100 most powerful celebrities.

Jonny Lee Miller: In the Limelight

Jonny Lee MillerWhen I first saw the commercials for ABC's Eli Stone, I didn't recognize Jonny Lee Miller. Then, after watching the first episode and liking him, I decided to find out who he was. Imagine my surprise when I learned that I had seen him, multiple times, in a variety of roles. And he was British! I was duly impressed and intrigued. Jonny Lee Miller was a helluva an actor, a chameleon who could be as convincing as a junkie named Sick Boy in Trainspotting as he was a San Francisco lawyer named Eli.

Law and Order's Linus Roache: In the Limelight

Linus Roache LeadThis season, Law and Order was looking for a way to get some new energy and interest in the long-running NBC Emmy-winning series, so on the judicial end of the show, they promoted Sam Waterson's Jack McCoy to DA and cast Linus Roache as Assistant District Attorney Michael Cutter. Roache is one of those familiar faces that you've seen on other shows, maybe a movie or two, but here on Law and Order he's making you sit up and take notice. At least that's how it is for me. After watching the first two new episodes when the show returned recently, I wanted to know more about this guy. For starters, why did he remind me of a young Bobby Kennedy?

Well, it turns out that Linus Roache played Robert Kennedy in the mini-series, RFK. The Kennedy connection was even alluded to in last week's episode; at the end of the show, after McCoy had to defend his decision to prosecute overzealous New York City cops by taking the stand in open court, Roache's character, Cutter, gives him a tie pin that once belonged to RFK. With the last line of the show, Cutter says, "I found it on EBay."

Universal Pictures presents: Wanted

Wow, a bullet curving right past someone's [Angelina Jolie's] head and rustling her hair. I saw that when it was in The Matrix. Wow, Angelina Jolie is a bad ass. I saw that in Tomb Raider and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Ooh, James McAvoy looks unsure of himself. I saw that in The Last King of Scotland. A movie about assassins? I saw that in Grosse Pointe Blank and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Morgan Freeman is wise and sage. I saw that in, uh, everything Morgan Freeman has ever been in.

But I'll give you one good reason I'll see this movie anyway: James McAvoy. That man is on fire.

Letterman goes classic tonight too

Late Show logoOK, I'm not sure if this Late Show with David Letterman episode that airs on CBS tonight is the purest definition of the word "classic," but at least it's not from two weeks ago like most repeats are on late night shows nowadays.

Jay Leno has been showing episodes from the 1990s lately, and now Letterman has reached into the vault. Tonight's show is from December 17, 1998 and features Angelina Jolie, Jeff Goldblum, and Third Eye Blind. I'm trying to figure out what was going on in Jolie's life at the time. She wasn't with Brad Pitt of course. Was this the Billy Bob Thornton/blood vials era? Here's the rundown on the show. Dick Clark makes a cameo (with a sketch about his New Year's Eve special), as does Casey Kasem. I wonder who got top billing back then, Jolie or Goldblum?

The Daily Show: June 14, 2007

Jon StewartThe always lovable Tony Snow shared some more stuff about the never-ending Alberto Gonzalez business. Apparently, the firings were not based on performance and, not only that, Snow claimed that he never said the firings were based on performance in the first place. You'd think that, by now, these folks would be more careful in claiming what they have or haven't said in the past because The Daily Show has magical montage-making abilities to highlight contradictions. And I think Tony Snow was actually wearing the same tie in those contradicting clips. I have no idea why, but I feel like that's insult to injury... As if the tie should have the memory of his speech from three months ago. Perhaps this is a sign I need sleep.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith -- A look at the pilot script

The cast of Mr & Mrs Smith
ABC had garnered a fair amount of press over this one because of the obvious tie-in to the Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie movie. The big news is that the creators of the movie are back for the TV show. Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Swingers) and Simon Kinberg (X-Men: The Last Stand) have signed on to try and transform their movie to the small screen.

David Arquette felt "beat up" after being on Stern - TCA Report

David ArquetteAfter yesterday's Q&A session for In Case of Emergency, I decided to ask David Arquette a question or two about his appearance on Howard Stern's show last week, where he talked a little about what broke up the Jennifer Aniston - Brad Pitt marriage (hint: she has bee-stung lips and a couple of adopted kids) and Aniston's subsequent relationship with Vince Vaughn, most of which made the tabloids.

Did he come out of the Stern show knowing he said things that were going to become news? "You definitely think, 'What did i say that they can twist?' because they do twist it. You kind of feel beat up when you get out of there." He went on to say, "I just don't want anyone to get the wrong impression, because I love all those people."

When I asked him how Stern is able to get information like that out of people, Arquette said, "He just asks crazy questions, and you kind of want to answer them truthfully. You don't want to lie."

Mr. & Mrs. Smith pilot finally gets the go ahead

mr and mrs smithSometimes the wheels of TV production turn mighty slowly. In August of '05 Adam posted about Doug Liman signing a deal with NBC. Then, last January there was talk about his first project being a series adaptation of the movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

A year later, and the show is finally getting the go ahead for a pilot, but not at NBC. Somehow the show has now ended up at ABC. Liman, who directed the big screen version, will direct the pilot. It will be written by Simon Kinberg, who wrote the movie. Kinberg says of the series, ""It's essentially Married With Children with guns." Casting is under way with nobody officially attached to replace Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie at this time.

I'll be curious to get a look at it, just because it's Doug Liman, but my real hope for the show is that it will somehow lead to a DVD set of the completely unrelated CBS show, also called Mr. & Mrs. Smith. You might remember that from the fall of '96, starring Scott Bakula and Maria Bello.

Who will make Barbara's 'Most Fascinating' list?

barbara waltersOnce again, ABC news woman Barbara Walters is hosting her list of The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2006. As usual, she's picking public figures from entertainment, politics, sports and business. ABC has released the names of six people on her list, including Patrick Dempsey (Grey's Anatomy), Anna Wintour, Andre Agassi, John Ramsey (JonBenet's father), televangelist Joel Osteen, and Terri Irwin. Last year's list included Jamie Foxx, Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Camilla Parker-Bowles, and Tom Cruise- who totally wigged out in 2005. The special airs on Tuesday, December 12th at 10 pm.

Whether you like her or not, I think Rachael Ray deserves to be on this year's list. 2006 was definitely her year. To that, I'd add Barack Obama (who should've been on her list in 2004) or Nancy Pelosi. And, probably Angelina Jolie.

Who else should make this list?

ABC seeks the best Imposter

Angelina Jolie impersonatorIf you thought ABC learned their lesson with The One, you were wrong. Like the little train that could, they keep chugging up reality TV mountain, confident that eventually they will get a little piece of that low production cost/high ratings action. The latest attempt comes from the producers of Last Comic Standing and is called The Imposter.

The show will search out the best impersonators in the country, whether they be actors, athletes, or musicians. The details are still being hammered out, but once the best impersonators are found they will all be brought together. Then they will compete in some sort of contest to determine the winner of an as yet undecided prize.

I suspect we will see an Idolesque first couple of episodes consisting mostly of the insane people that show up for a casting call like this. In fact, I think you can get even odds that Man-Faye will be there. Plans call for a summer 2007 debut. And chances call for a summer 2007 cancellation.

Update: The Angelina Jolie lookalike pictured here is Tiffany Claus. You can find out more about her, and see more pictures at her website.

Artist sculpts Jolie/Pitt/Aniston threesome

Jolie Pitt AnistonChanneling the minds of pop culture-savvy perverts everywhere, artist Daniel Edwards has decided to start a bronze sculpture depicting Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt, and Angelina Jolie in a threesome. According to reports, Jolie and Aniston aren't too pleased with this news and plan on doing everything they can to keep the sculpture from being exhibited, but Pitt doesn't seem to have a problem with it. Insert a comment about the typical male, perhaps a joke or two about not asking for directions.

If the artist's name sounds familiar, it's probably because he recently made headlines with his sculpture of Britney Spears giving birth on a bearskin rug. Poor guy has to keep one-upping himself.

Angelina Jolie gives post-baby interview to Anderson Cooper

angelina jolieNow back in Los Angeles after giving birth to baby Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt at a resort in Africa, Angelina Jolie recently sat down for an interview with CNN's golden boy, Anderson Cooper. According to E!, she talks to Cooper about being terrified during the c-section ("I just wanted to hear her cry"), Brad Pitt in the operating room during the birth of their daughter, and about her work with refugees. You've got to give Angelina credit for using her celebrity powers for good. She put Namibia on the map and is doing a great job of getting the media to agree to cover both her personal life and her pet charity projects.

The interview coincides with World Refugee Day and it airs on Tuesday, June 20 at 10 pm on Anderson Cooper 360.
