We scoured the earth (and the archives at various record companies for failed projects that showed vocal promise) to create the greatest assemblage of singing talent
American Idol has ever seen! So what happened? After last year's virtual snooze-fest, how did a season that truly did give us perhaps the greatest depth of talent we've ever seen (an argument could be made for Season Five) give us such lackluster shows?
After Sanjaya-gate last year, the biggest controversy to come out this year was that finalist David Hernandez used to be a stripper and David Archuleta's dad might be a Mr. Meany-Pants. And we got to be pissed that Kristy Lee Cook outlasted the likes of Michael Johns. Not until we got to the finale of Davids did things get really intense.

Okay, well maybe. Certainly he talked Carly out of her original song choice of
The Phantom of the Opera's "All I Ask of You" and into the more controversial "Superstar," from
Jesus Christ Superstar.
The New York Times reports that
Carly Smithson's song choice may have spelled her doom from
American Idol this past week. Many fans were none too pleased with her performing that particular number, sounding off online against the singer.
Surely Webber recalls the furor the album and subsequent stage production of
Jesus Christ Superstar wrought from some religious groups when it first came out. While, as the Times piece indicates, the sensitivity over its controversial nature has waned in the passing decades, it has not died out. That's what makes shows like this fun, and chatting about them online live as they happen even more fun. (S07E33) It's really coming down to it now. There's only six contestants left and we get back-to-back mentors. Following on the heels of Mariah Carey is Andrew Lloyd Webber. Don't know the name? He's the mastermind behind such Broadway classics as
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Cats and
The Phantom of the Opera. So now Simon has an excuse to say everyone sounds like they're in some Broadway musical production rather than a pop-star. We're going to keep liveblogging these bad boys, tonight's starting just before 8:00pm ET.
