But Entertainment Weekly thinks they've done just that. They've compiled the top 20 reality shows of all time, but also the ten worst reality shows of all time. All in all, they did a pretty damned good job.

I completely agree with the top six, but they lose me with Jackass at number seven. I have never understood the appeal of filming morons doing stupid things on purpose just to be stupid. But there were some shows missing from the list completely, like Little People Big World, So You Think You Can Dance and Beauty and the Geek. Surely those shows are better than The Hills and The Real Housewives of Sesame Street, or whatever franchise they're spinning now.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

We're barely halfway through and I've already got finale fatigue!

Filed under: Other Drama Shows, Other Comedy Shows, Programming, OpEd, The Amazing Race, The Apprentice, CSI, House, Lost, Smallville, Grey's Anatomy, The Office, 30 Rock, Reality-Free, Fringe, The Big Bang Theory, Parks and Recreation
Do the American people really like watching their favorite shows this way? Assuming you have more than one or two shows you enjoy following, this week is daunting to say the least and beyond exhausting. Just last night I had a three-hour finale of The Biggest Loser and that awesome Fringe finale. In the past few days we've said goodbye to The Amazing Race, The Apprentice, Cold Case, The Unit, Brothers & Sisters, The Big Bang Theory, House and Castle. And that's just on the major networks.

Over the next two days we have America's Next Top Model, Lie to Me, Lost, Bones, My Name Is Earl, Smallville, Parks & Recreation, CSI, Grey's Anatomy, Hell's Kitchen, The Office, Supernatural and even CSI: NY on a special night. And it goes on through the weekend. In an era where ratings are slipping, how can it make good business sense to put all of these finales on against one another all within a few days of each other. I know they've always done that, but I just don't think it makes sense anymore.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

America's Next Top Model: Who will win?

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, OpEd, Watercooler Talk

It's finally that time when Tyra has three contestants left on America's Next Top Model. After weeding out the competition, we are left with Allison, Aminat, and Teyona. Like every finale, the girls will have to complete a Cover Girl commercial/photoshoot, and then the final two will have a runway walk-off.

Who has the upper hand? None of them. Each contestant is missing a piece of the model puzzle. None of the winners ever had every aspect down, bringing it all down to the decision of Tyra Banks. Let's take a look at some of the advantages, disadvantages, and outlying factors that will affect the girls in the final episode.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Weekly Reality Awards

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, OpEd, The Amazing Race, American Idol, Survivor, Dancing With The Stars
This week, reality television maintained some normalcy. The outliers in Survivor, Dancing with the Stars, and Hell's Kitchen went home. Although I'll lament the loss of Mel and Mike in The Amazing Race, I believe that all the remaining teams deserve to be there.

Speaking of teams, the Survivor Secret Alliance still has the numbers. With the merge inevitable, we'll see if one of the best alliances ever created will stick together. As long as Coach goes home, I'll be satisfied. More analysis after the jump.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Weekly Reality Awards - VIDEO

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, OpEd, The Amazing Race, Commercials, Celebreality
This week in reality television was eclectic. Dancing With the Stars was happily un-complicated with the absence of Denise Richards, America's Next Top Model's most home-sick model mysteriously was on top, and no one should have watched Survivor because it was a waste of time.

This is one of those weeks where you realize that the show casts people with little-to-no chance of winning just so that the people they want to win don't mess up. Although American Idol's Michael Sarver is a great example, I'm looking mostly at Celia (right) from Top Model: she's too old. On a positive note, there was a lot of weird, memorable, and funny moments to compensate this week. Although the two shows are different beasts (one is about models that accidentally look drag, the other intentionally looks drag), the competitive qualities of the show remain the same. There is still runway walking, working in different fashion themes, and looking fierce.

RuPaul has said that the two shows aren't interchangeable and it's true: Drag Race is colorful, fun, and intriguing; qualities that Top Model has lost after all these years.
The CW recently announced that Tyra Banks is looking for a short Top Model. Cycle 13 is casting women between the ages of 18 and 27 and below the height requirement of 5'7. Excuse me? I understand that people like Kate Moss (or even previous winner Eva) were shorter than 5'7, but I've learned from fashion friends and television that clothes just look better on someone taller.

We all know that Tyra just wants some ratings boost to her show. A whole cycle of America's Next Top Model with shorter contestants doesn't make sense. Mixing it up with heights would be interesting, but I guess nothing can compare to blindness, Asperger's, being transgendered, or just being Jade. If I get a whole cycle of Tyra teaching short girls how to lean back a little to accentuate their body, I'm definitely going to flip. There will be criticism telling the girls to "stand tall and proud." I can't take it already.

If Tyra really wants real models, take a tip from other shows: drop the competing age to 16 like American Idol. Tyra herself started modeling at 15, why not give girls with real potential a shot? What do you think should be the next draw for ratings?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The CW is going to stick around

Filed under: Other Reality Shows, Industry, Programming, Smallville, Pickups and Renewals, Reality-Free, Gossip Girl
Sweet Zombie Jesus! In the biggest display of optimism in the face of depression since FDR signed the New Deal, The CW has renewed six of their series, including Smallville, for next season. It's like someone forgot to tell The CW that their ratings comparatively suck and the economy is in the crapper.

I can't speak for the other series they've renewed, by The CW should be sticking a fork in Smallville. It's done. This season would have made a good final one but dragging it out for another year seems fatalistic. Who will be showing up next? Darkseid? The cow is dead. Stop trying to milk it.

Still, one has to admire The CW for flipping the bird in the face of the critics (including yours truly). I just think the merger between The WB and UPN was a bad idea way back when. The program selection and quality seemed better when they were two separate networks.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

The Big Bang Theory: The Panty Piņata Polarization

Filed under: Episode Reviews, Reality-Free, The Big Bang Theory

(S02E07) What I love about Big Bang Theory, is that every time you're watching it and thinking, "yes, they're geeks. Thanks Chuck Lorre, I get it," they give you a beautiful gift: this week, that gift was Klingon Boggle. Who knew that the Yiddish word for a tasty meat dumpling was so close to the Klingon word for a tasty Klingon dumpling? I think this show is making me smarter.

While I love Klingon Boggle, I'm not so in love with the main plot from this week: the war between Sheldon and Penny. Don't get me wrong; I love the idea of a war between these two. Their interaction is my favorite part of the show. What I don't like is that the premise was flawed. There was nothing that happened in this episode that was even slightly out of character for Sheldon, yet Penny was constantly surprised by his behavior. I mean, come on, Penny. You've known this guy for over a year. Are you really that shocked that he doesn't want you to touch his food?

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

America's Next Top Model: The Ladder of Model Success

Filed under: America's Next Top Model, Episode Reviews
(S01E03) I'm really kind of freaked out by the contestants that we've seen so far this season. No, not because there's a transgendered person in the house; the reason I'm so confused is that there seem to be several girls who are kind of awesome.

Of course Hannah is an idiot; she's the small town girl that ends up on the show every season and goes through the competition completely unrepentant in her ignorance. While the other girls in the house usually just go with this, this season they're actually confronting her about her stank behavior, which includes pushing Isis and saying that since she's the "stereotypical white girl," she doesn't come into rooms screaming, (like black people do).

When they have the confrontation, which to me, seems very calm and respectful, Hannah actually likens it to "gang rape," and says it's "like gang violence." She is a ridiculous individual. A ridiculous, horrifying, ugly individual.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Good thing 90210 is saving The CW, because Top Model sure isn't

Filed under: Industry, Programming, OpEd, America's Next Top Model, Ratings, 90210
I feel as though I've done nothing the entire week except watch The CW. When I close my eyes, I just see images of highlights, dangerously low BMIs and huge, blinding teeth. Apparently, I'm not alone. When Gossip Girl's second season premiered on Monday night, it grabbed record ratings for the show that, up until then, has never been quite popular enough to live up to its buzz. On Wednesday night, even more people tuned into the premiere of 90210, which garnered huge ratings for The CW, with 4.9 million viewers. It seemed as though people were finally flocking to the fledgling network. However, Wednesday's premiere of America's Next Top Model didn't exactly keep the streak alive.

Top Model, which began its 11th cycle, but not, as Tyra said, it's "second decade," didn't have viewers glued to their TVs. The two-hour premiere only nabbed 3.5 million viewers, with 1.7 million of those in the coveted 18-49 demographic. This is down 11% from cycle 10, which premiered in February of this year, and down 32% from last September's cycle 9.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

America's Next Top Model: The Notorious Fierce Fourteen; Top Model Inauguration (season premiere)

Filed under: America's Next Top Model, Episode Reviews
(S11E01; S11E02) The CW is trying to kill me. Being bad is overrated (almost as overrated as being good). But being bad-ass, now that's a tricky balancing act, one that is way more intriguing.

This list therefore is dedicated to the women of reality TV that make being bad look oh so good. And no, Omarosa Stallworth-whatever is NOT on the list. I'll explain why after the jump.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Family Guy: No Meals On Wheels

Filed under: Other Comedy Shows, FOX, Family Guy, Animation
(S05E14) The up and down season of Family Guy continues, and I thought this one was a bit of a valley, rather than a peak. It had its moments, to be sure, but as a whole, it was somewhat lacking. Peter summed up my feelings for this episode pretty well with his quote after seeing the opening to Maude, "That was an ordeal."

That bit is a good example of what was wrong with this installment. Aside from the fact that it was a reference to a show that you have to be 40 years old, or a tv nutter, to get, it just wasn't funny. And no matter how long the song went on, it was never going to be funny. I found myself in much the same situation while watching tonight. I was just sitting and watching, waiting for it to get funny.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments

Changes for Nielsen ratings

Filed under: Industry, Family Guy, Veronica Mars, Ugly Betty, Ratings
Nielsen Media Research is making a change to their television ratings. In the past, children of a Nielsen family that were away at college were not factored into the numbers. After doing some research, sponsored by Turner, WB, CBS, MTV, Fox, and ESPN, those college kids will now count in the regular Nielsen ratings.

The NY Times article (possible login) points to America's Next Top Model, Family Guy, Ugly Betty, and [adult swim] as programming that should see a boost in their ratings. Disturbingly, it also mentions that in a test done last November the most popular show among college men was Drawn Together. The audience for the Comedy Central cartoon jumped from 272,000 to 435,000. What are they teaching our youth on these campuses?

This certainly isn't the final answer in the ratings question. There are still plenty of problems and issues with the system, but it is a positive change. Especially so if it gives a much needed boost to the struggling Veronica Mars numbers.

Permalink | Email this | | Comments
