Friday Night Lights: There Goes The Neighborhood

Kyle Chandler - Friday Night Lights
(S02E10) And we're back. After a month off for viewers to celebrate the holidays, and for the networks to try and figure out how to fill up the schedule as the strike stretches on, our old pals in Dillon have returned. And things picked up right where they left off. Riggins is still wandering from home to home. Buddy is still in denial. None of us are sure just why Shelley is still living with the Taylor's. And Landry has gone from being riddled with the guilt of committing murder to being emotionally pummeled by the fact that he's fallen for a passive aggressive nutjob. It's a lot to get to, but we'll give it a shot, after the jump.

Friday Night Lights: Seeing Other People

Friday Night Lights - Taylor Kitsch
(S05E08) I know a few people, and I've read comments from a number of others here at TV Squad, who refuse to watch the promos for shows that the networks put out. It usually boils down to them being either full of spoilers or completely misleading. If you are one of those people, this episode was for you, because not only did those of us that saw the promo have the ending spoiled, but we were also completely misled as to what the episode would be about, and I'm really not sure why the network did it. More on that, and the rest of the happenings this week in Dillon, after the jump.

Friday Night Lights: How Did I Get Here

Glenn Morshower and Jesse Plemons - Friday Night Lights
(S02E06) And you may ask yourself - Well... How did I get here?

It's a great title for this episode as we find a lot of our pals in Dillon questioning, being questioned about, or owning up to the situation they are currently in. That doesn't make for huge plot points that you can point to and say, "Look at that!" But it does bring up some interesting questions, and pave the way for stories in the future. With so many of the characters getting time this week, all of these changes actually overshadowed the one big, holy smokes, moment of the episode. That little thing you see in the screen cap.

Friday Night Lights: Let's Get It On

Lance and Eric - Friday Night Lights
(S05E05) "Lance!"

Week five of season two brings us another packed episode. Eric is getting settled back into his role as the Panther's coach, and being with his family. Big changes are in the air for Landry on, and off, the football field. A more assertive Matt is coming to some realizations about Julie. And we find out the result of the great Mexican shark blood surgery road trip. It's a lot to get to.

Friday Night Lights: Backfire

Kyle Chandler and Brad Leland - Friday Night Lights
(S03E04) "The Eagle has landed. It's a done deal." - Buddy Garrity

Another Friday night spent with NBC, and this one came across as a little bit strange. Not bad strange, or good heavens, what now strange. Just that the story here caught me a little off guard. It's a little early in the season for what you might call a pivotal episode. Usually at this point things are being put in motion, or big picture stories are getting a break for a stand-alone episode. Such is not the case in Dillon, as three big stories had big moments this week. To balance it out, we also had more from the shark blood road trip, and the quickly getting away from us Lyla crusade. All that, and some other junk, after the jump.

Friday Night Lights: Bad Ideas

zach gilford - friday night lights(S02E02) As I was watching the show tonight, thoughts on this post were running through my head. Initially I planned on doing like last week and pushing the Landry/Tyra stuff to the end of the post, after we go through the parts of the episode that actually make some sense. But then I typed out that episode title, "Bad Ideas", and I just can't get over how well that fits.

They may have intended that title as a reference to what is going on with many of the characters. Things like Tami's admission that her insistence that she and Julie stay in Dillon was a bad idea, how Buddy's own actions have created his situation, the experimental Mexican surgery proposed to Street, or even Antwone's trip to the Justin Timberlake concert. To me though, THE bad idea is nothing that any of the characters are doing. It is this Landry and Tyra story that the writers and producers have cooked up. So we'll get started there, after the jump.

Friday Night Lights: Last Days Of Summer (season premiere)

Adrianne Palicki and Jesse Plemons - Friday Night Lights(S02E01) And we're back for another season with the Dillon Panthers. You have to think that there is some pressure on the folks behind the show as they kick off this new year. The renewal was great and all, but I suspect it came with some helpful suggestions as to the kind of numbers the network is looking for on Friday nights. It should be interesting to see how the show performs on the new night.

Over the summer we lost eight months of Texas time, but that really doesn't matter. For the most part, we pick up all of our ongoing stories where we left off last spring. Anything we really need to know is handed off to us as we are reunited with these characters again. Since the show kicked off with Matt and Landry at the pool, let's start there.

Friday Night Lights season two -- An early look - VIDEO

zach gilford - jesse plemons - friday night lights
Last week was certainly the biggie for the kickoff to the new season, but this week isn't too shabby either. In fact, this week brings us the premiere of my most eagerly anticipated returning show, Friday Night Lights. Honestly, there is a part of me that is still a little surprised that we are going to get to see season two. The first season was a bit of a bumpy ride in the ratings department, but NBC stepped up to the plate and I'm holding out hope that it pays off for them.

Friday Night Lights: State (season finale)

Kyle Chandler(S01E22) Can it really be? We've been through twenty-two episodes of Friday Night Lights already? Maybe it's just my reluctance to have the show end, but it seems like this season went by awfully fast. Last week I guessed that the team would win the game, Eric would stay in Dillon, and that the show would get a second season. We got answers for those first two, but we'll have to wait a bit longer on that last one. News that the network has ordered six more scripts is certainly positive. We'll cross that bridge when word comes out.

Throughout much of the season I made a point of noting that this isn't a show about football. Most of the Panther games we got to see were given very short bits of episodes, and were usually not the focus of the episode. This episode altered that balance and gave a lot more time to the game. Understandably so, this was the state championship. It's something that these characters have been working toward for the entire season, so a big payoff was fitting.

Friday Night Lights: Ch-Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes

Scott Porter(S01E19) After a short break, we are back for the final run of the season. There were answers to a couple lingering question, the avoiding of another one, and, as the title says, changes are in the air for many of the residents of Dillon. There was so much going on for everyone this week, it's hard to know where to start. Let's talk about Street.

There will be no trip to Beijing in Street's future, and I'm happy about that. His progress on the rugby adventure has seemed rather quick, so I liked hearing Herc's explanation for Street not making the team. He's not comfortable in the chair, and given how recent his injury still is, he really shouldn't be. That scene with Herc was very good. They do share in a lot of ribbing of each other, but they've developed a nice friendship. Herc is rough around the edges, but you can tell he wants what's best for Street. I also liked his line, "This is championship QB, not therapy."

Friday Night Lights: Nevermind

Zach Gilford(S01E11) After almost a month off, Friday Night Lights is back on a new night. It's great to see a new episode, but will the move give the show a much needed ratings boost? We'll have to wait and see. They did pick a good episode to come back with though. There was a lot of good stuff going on this week.

They tipped their hand with where this episode was going in the previously on segment. Lots of Street and Saracen, and a look back at Saracen talking with his dad. That was driven home with the scene where Henry returned home. At first, I thought it maybe missed the mark a little bit, because it didn't seem to be the happy homecoming it should have been. Of course, as we found out later, it wasn't a happy homecoming.

Almost all of the Saracen story was really good. They've done a great job over the first ten episodes setting up the stresses and pressures on Matt. He's been put in a very difficult position, raising himself and taking care of his grandmother at an age when he really shouldn't have to. Part of what got him through all of that was the belief that with his father's return would come a break from all of it. A chance to just be normal and let someone else carry all the weight. When that didn't come through, he finally snapped. And that was a fantastic scene.

Friday Night Lights: Full Hearts

Zach Gilford(S01E09) After a week off, the Panthers have another big game. And although there was a lot of hype about how tough this game would be in the promos, the game itself was almost an afterthought. As the show moves along there is less and less focus on the actual football. If my clock is right, we didn't get any actual game footage until 53 minutes into the hour. And that's fine by me. All three of the stories from this week were great, and the little bit of the game that we did get covered everything we needed to know.

First up, lots of development for the William's family. The Smash on steroids story seems to suffer from some of the time issues that the Street recovery does. It's all happening a little fast. Given that he just started on his cycle last week, I don't think he should be seeing a skin reaction or whatever the episode during his workout was. I'm willing to accept that time moves faster in Dillon though, because I really liked the William's family story this week.

Friday Night Lights: Who's Your Daddy?

amy teegarden(S01E04) It's rivalry week as Dillon gets ready to go up against Arnett Mead. A bit of an interesting parallel there because while that will be a big game for the Panthers, the show has a big night next Monday. NBC is going to give Friday Night Lights a run in that post Heroes slot, and a (ratings) win is just what the show needs. But enough about that, this was another good episode.

The writers continue to strike a nice balance between the four major story lines. Those being the football team, the Taylor family, Street, and Saracen. I really liked the Eric and Tami story tonight, with one little exception. We already know that Eric was Street's coach when he was younger. That kind of implies that they have been in the community for a while. How on earth could the "tradition" of the party at the coach's house have taken everyone by such surprise?

Friday Night Lights: Eyes Wide Open

Zach Gilford - Friday Night Lights(S01E02) We pick up where we left off with the town dealing with the injury to Jason Street. Everyone seems to be handling it in different ways. While Riggins is drinking his way through it, Smash is already trying to take over Street's role as the big man on campus. Lyla has an unflinching optimism that is sweet, but it's very clear that the line between optimism and denial is a thin one. It looks like we'll be getting into that next week.

Coach Taylor has his own problems. While he's concerned about Street, and there is a very father/son type of relationship there clearly, he has the pressure of the town telling him how they need that W. Matt is almost a deer in the headlights, wondering just what he's got himself into. It makes for all kinds of drama.
