Now this is some casting news I can get behind. After the
disastrous In the Motherhood,
Megan Mullally is returning to television-- on a show that's actually funny! Mullally is set to
join the cast of the amazing Party Down, a Starz original from
Veronica Mars creator,
Rob Thomas.
Mullally is replacing
Jane Lynch, whose role as Sue Sylvester on
Glee has been bumped up from recurring character to series regular. She plays "Lydia Dunfree, who leaves her small town and her failed marriage to help her 13-year-old daughter Escapade achieve her dream of becoming an actress. In addition to working as a cater-waiter for Party Down, Lydia is looking for Mr. Right."

Remember that
Veronica Mars movie that so many people were talking about? Well, according to an interview with series star Kristen Bell,
it ain't happening. She and series creator Rob Thomas pitched the idea to Joel Silver and there was a resounding lack of interest. She suggested that fans try a letter-writing campaign.
I'm kind of surprised at that reaction, given that
Veronica Mars is a recognizable brand name and would be relatively cheap to make (it's not exactly laden with special effects). While I considered the series to be a
Buffy clone (that solved mysteries rather than fought vampires), it was a pretty good show in the beginning.
The only show I can think of that quickly went from TV to cancellation to a movie would be
Firefly and that happened because of stellar DVD sales. So, if you really want that
Veronica Mars movie, along with the letter-writing campaign, start buying more DVDs of the show.

If you've been following my
Jane After Dark adventures, you know it's all about the DVDs I watch into the wee hours while I'm covering the
TV Squad queue and everyone else (at least in my house) is sleeping.
I've finished
Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and I'm nearly done with
Angel. I'll post this weekend about season five of
Angel. You guys are
absolutely right. It's awesome TV.
After that, I need you to help me choose my next Jane After Dark series. There are so many great TV shows on DVD, and frankly, I'm stumped at what to watch next. So please vote in my poll below, and tell me what to do! And if you don't see your series listed, tell me in the comments, and I'll add it to the list next time.

If you are a
Veronica Mars fan like I am, then you are probably still mourning the loss of the series; well, the first two seasons anyway. I'm sure the series hadn't run its course and that it would have rebounded from the fiasco known as season three, otherwise known as Piz.
OK, so maybe Piz grew on me a little, and he did keep Logan nice and angry, because nobody likes a happy Logan. And besides, would you want to see that sappy, insipid Logan in a feature film?
Did you like the way I slipped that in there? Feature film? Yep, Rob Thomas has confirmed that since the order on Cupid has been slashed from thirteen to eight episodes, he'll have time to write the

might be dead, but the rumors of Kristen Bell reprising the role of Veronica Mars for a big screen outing are still circulating. Actually, a script is being written and a movie deal might already be in place. At least that's what former
Veronica Mars cast member Enrico Colantoni is saying.
In a recent
red carpet interview with The TV Addict, Colantoni said that
VM creator Rob Thomas is working on a script for a film version of the short-lived CW series. Colantoni is the latest
Mars associate to get fans' hopes up about Veronica's jump to the big screen. In recent months, Thomas and
VM star Kristen Bell have
spoken publicly about their love for the series and their hopes for a film project. Colantoni seems confident that the movie will happen.
The actor also told The TV Addict that Thomas had possibly come to an agreement with "Joel" about the film's production. That "Joel" is most likely Joel Silver, former executive producer of the show (and about a million blockbusters, including
The Matrix and
Lethal Weapon). If this is true, then it looks like this project might actually become a reality. Let's just hope Thomas can fit it in while working on the
Cupid redo for ABC.

Look, this isn't my first time at the rodeo. I knew going into this last year, that the chances of a quirky fairy tale about death having long-term success were slim-to-none.
I've seen the signs; I've known that
this day was going to come. That doesn't mean that I couldn't hope that ABC would decide to keep
Pushing Daisies; my favorite new show from last season. I've held out hope, and today,
that hope was dashed. What's worse, is I can't even focus all of my anger on ABC; some of it is pointed directly at
Daisies creator, Bryan Fuller.
I'm trying to be mature and diplomatic about this, but seriously: Bryan Fuller can suck it.

When CBS presented their upfront last May, one of the more intriguing dramas was a murder mystery/slasher film/whodunit about a wedding party on a Seattle island. It was called
Harper's Island and projected for mid-season. The preview played like a cross between
Ten Little Indians and
Twin Peaks to me, and I liked what I saw. I certainly plan on giving it a try when it shows up on CBS.
It's still slated for early 2009, only now the actor playing the groom's loud, fun-loving and duplicitous uncle is going to be
Harry Hamlin. He has been added to the Harper's Island cast as Marty.

Outrageous Fortune), he still hasn't forgotten the little detective show that is singlehandedly responsible for people no longer asking him if he's the dude from Matchbox Twenty. Apparently, Thomas's production office is located on the same lot where
VM star
Kristen Bell is currently shooting
Heroes and the two sat down for a little chat.

Girl. It's true,
it's an impossibility.
Gossip Girl, the random, trashy, highly buzzed about but low-rated CW drama, is returning for its second season on September 1st. Recently,
The CW has released some teasers to catch us up on what everybody's favorite perfectly-coiffed Upper East Siders are up to. Basically, they're still having sex and backstabbing one another, but this time it's in The Hamptons!
I've got to admit that I'm ashamed of myself for being this excited about
Gossip Girl's return. It's cheesy and silly, and is definitely not a replacement for The CW's oft-mourned
Veronica Mars. Regardless, seeing the gang (minus the Humphreys) in these promos was nice--in a very similar way to when someone you went to high school with but weren't friends with finds you on Facebook. It's interesting to see what they've been up to, but you're still pretty sure you're not going to be besties.

It looks like
guest-starring on Chuck isn't the biggest thing going on in Nicole Richie's TV career. The former
Simple Life star has just announced that a
TV show based on her 2005 novel is in the works. Richie's roman à clef, titled
The Truth About Diamonds, follows Chloe Parker, the adopted daughter of a rock star who runs around with a bad crowd in Hollywood. Throughout the novel, Parker faces struggles with the law, drugs and her friends. Sound familiar?
Not only is Richie planning on producing the show, but she'll be appearing in it as well. Even though she based Chloe Parker on herself, Richie says that she won't necessarily be playing the lead, "I would definitely produce and definitely be in the show, [but] I don't know if I need to be the star of this show." Since production is still in the early stages, the details surrounding the series remain unclear, such as what network it will be on, and whether or not it will be a drama or a comedy.

The big screen adaptation of
I Dream of Jeannie has been years in the making. Now a script writer is attached, so who knows, maybe we'll see it in theaters in the next few years (
IMDB.com lists a release date of 2010). And something tells me we'll probably see a belly button or two.
Producer Sid Ganis is bringing Rita Hsiao, who scribed
Mulan, on board to rewrite the script for a movie based on the 1960s series. Ganis is psyched for Hsiao's vision of the character -- a Jeannie who's smack in the middle of modern times.
In a
Hollywood Reporter story, Ganis said of
Hsiao's meeting with the producers, "She has a terrific, bright, fresh approach to Jeannie's story, with a twist and turn along the way. She captured all of our imaginations in the telling of it."

Of all the networks,
CBS has the most new shows on deck, including two new comedies,
Worst Week and
Project Gary, and two new dramas,
The Ex-List and
The Mentalist. Another drama is set for mid-season,
Harper's Island. We've had a chance to look over these new TV shows, and by and large, it's a fascinating bunch. Also adventurous. No procedurals. More character-driven programming it seems. CBS seems determined not to rest on their laurels.
Read what we thought about these advance screeners, bearing in mind that things are liable to change before the shows start to air.

The
TV Squad Awards are in full swing, and I have the pleasure of moderating The Arrested Development Award, a.k.a. The Show Least Deserving of Cancellation Award.
Since we're focusing on shows from the 2007-2008 season, that lets out a few contenders, like
Veronica Mars ,
Firefly, and the award's namesake,
Arrested Development. But there are plenty of recent shows deserving of the honor. Five that made my list:
1.
Journeyman (NBC). This time-shift puzzle starring Kevin McKidd as deer-in-the-headlights Dan Vasser took a while to hook me, but by mid-season, I was there. I love shows that make you think, and although this one developed a formula (Dan saving someone who would later go on to change history), the logistics always had you scratching your head. I was sad to see it absent from NBC's Fall 08 schedule.
