SageTV 6.2.5 beta
SageTV released a new beta of its PC based PVR software today. SageTV 6.2.5 Beta for Linux and Windows includes a boatload of bug fixes and new features, including:
  • Added support for Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1800 TV tuners in Windows
  • Added ClearQAM (unencrypted high definition cable) support for Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1600 and HVR-1800 TV tuners in Windows
  • Added support for AverMedia M780 TV tuner in Windows Vista
  • Fixed a Windows bug that caused music files to end early
  • Fixed audio/video sync bug with H.264 files
  • Support changing from over-the-air to cable TV tuning without restarting the application or having to pick a different input
  • Added Apple TV transcoding profiles
As always, remember that this is beta software, so your results may vary. If you're the adventurous sort, and don't mind crashing your PC or missing a few recordings, it looks like a great update. For everyone else, you might want to wait until the next stable release.

ATI announces two new HDTV tuners

TV Wonder 600AMD will release two new HDTV tuners in its ATI TV Wonder line of products later this year.

The ATI TV Wonder 600 USB is, not surprisingly, a USB dongle-style TV tuner, for use with laptop or desktop PCs. it can capture standard or high definition cable or over the air programming.

The USB tuner cmes with a credit-card sized infrared remote control and an A/V input adapter for capturing video from analog sources like a camcorder or VCR.

The TV Wonder 650 PCIe is a desktop tuner card that can capture over-the-air or cable programming, including ClearQAM unencrypted high definition television. It also packs an FM radio tuner.

No word on pricing, but the TV Wonder 600 USB and 650 PCIe should be out in North America this fall.

Windows Vista boosts PC TV tuners

AveMedia PCIe tunerNow that most computers on sale at your local Best Buy or Circuit City are running Windows Vista Home Premium, there are a lot of folks out there with Windows Media Center, although they might not realize it. You can use your PC just fine without ever looking at its 10-foot interface.

Still, market research firm In-Stat projects that nearly 51 million TV tuners will be sold by around the wold 2011. That could turn what's now a niche market into a multi-billion dollar industry.

Most consumers will probably find a TV tuner bundled with their PC running Windows Vista. But those numbers also include USB tuners and CableCard tuners that probably won't be bundled with many PCs.

Hopefully as the market for PC-based personal video recorders grows we'll see more innovations in the software market with more companies developing commercial plugins for Windows Media Center. Of course, there are plenty of free plugins available today to do everything from singing karaoke to checking the weather forecasts. But there's plenty of incentive for developers to think outside the box with a potential customer base of 51-million people.
