(S02E03) "He can do it. I'm wearin' my favorite pumps." - Pam to Eric, when he asked her and Chow to go troll the woods for the bull-creatureI could hear Lou Grant in my head during this episode of
True Blood, saying "Sookie, you've got spunk." Only instead of hating Sookie's spunk, I'm loving it. I'd like to have just half the spunk Sookie's got. Last season, she not only buried her grandma and cleaned up all that blood in her kitchen, but she has no problem getting out of a car after fighting with Bill and stomping off into the night, knowing there are weird creatures out there. Ok, maybe not the smartest move on her part, but it did lead to good results for Lafayette.
Those were some serious scratches Sookie had after the bull creature attacked her. I hope
True Blood gets an Emmy nod for makeup, because they really do a good job with the blood and guts, not to mention mouth-foaming on Sookie's part in this episode.

Well, eeewwww! I hope nobody was eating dinner during this episode, because there were some real gross-out scenes. The opener with a chained-in-the-basement Lafayette being hit by a severed arm and watching Erik drool large amounts of blood was bad enough. But later when Lafayette foraged through the guy's severed leg to find a piece of metal (at least, I
think it was metal) to jimmy his chain lock open ... well, I was seriously cringing.
I'm really trying not to reveal spoilers on the front page, but there's not a whole lot about
True Blood that
isn't a spoiler. I guess I could talk about Bill and Sookie having makeup sex and post-sex pillow talk, and how interesting it was to Bill ... nah, that's just not interesting enough on its own for pre-jump text.

On July 16th when the Primetime Emmy nominations are announced, one name that is likely to appear in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series is
Aaron Paul. As Jesse Pinkman on AMC's
Breaking Bad, Aaron has done amazing work, revealing a character as fascinating as he is flawed.
His performance this past season on
Breaking Bad has generated lots of talk about an Emmy nomination, but not to be overlooked is the fact that Paul is also doing great work on HBO's
Big Love. On that drama, his character, Scott, is the antithesis of Jesse. It's a testament to Aaron's skill as an actor that I didn't recognize him at first from
Big Love when I watched
Breaking Bad. A search of
his IMDB listing was one of those 'ah-ha' moments. Recently, I had to chance to speak with Aaron, and we started with the jaw-dropping season finale of
Breaking Bad.

(S02E01) "I think I've seen enough dead bodies to last me a lifetime." - Sookie to SamHave I mentioned how excited I am to have
True Blood back? Yeah, I think so. At least 43 times around the Web. And tonight's season two premiere did not disappoint. It was
everything Stephen Moyer said it would be when I talked to him last week -- dark, sexy, mysterious and bloody good.
For those of you who need time to catch up with your Tivo, I'll keep this front part unspoiled. But I won't be giving anything away by saying that they tied seasons one and two together very nicely. Some of the questions we had from season one are answered. Some are not.

Vampires, shapeshifters, and a barmaid who can read peoples' minds ... HBO's True Blood returns on June 14, 9 PM.
I've been impatiently waiting for the white-hot series to come back since the toenail-painted black foot slumped out of Andy's car door at the end of season one. Is it Lafayette's foot? I asked Stephen Moyer, who plays vampire Bill Compton, but of course, he wouldn't tell me. No matter. I'll be glued to my TV next Sunday night.
Read on and find out what Moyer has to say about the new season, what it's like playing a 173-year-old vampire, and whether the love triangle between Sookie, Bill and Sam will continue. And I managed to keep my head, even as Moyer called me "Love" and "Darling" in his delightful British accent.

In the DVR era, I have this new problem/blessing that happens to me every year. I jump on board these shows and then just get too busy to keep up with them and they pile up and sit there on my DVR unwatched. As an example, I just finished "Chapter 5" of
John Adams last night; damn that's a good mini-series. But now that 99% of the network shows are wrapping up their seasons, I'm looking at three months of solid catch-up time.
I can also use the time to try out series I've always wanted to get into but just haven't for some reason or another; I'll use that "no time" excuse again. With more videos streaming online at Hulu (thanks ABC), seasons coming out ever faster on DVD and more vintage shows coming out the field is wide open. Of course, I'm probably taking on more than I can handle, but dammit I'm excited!

Now here's some news I can sink my teeth into. Aside from
my Buffy fixation, I spend my days and nights awaiting the return of Alan Ball's
True Blood on June 16. I'm on a vampire roll.
The HBO show has just picked up Evan Rachel Wood, who will play a vampire queen in the second season. You know, she sort of has that vampire look to her. Or rather, the goth look I imagine a female vamp might have. I think she'll be great in the role.
Wood's character is the Queen of Louisiana, a 400-year-old vampire who rules over the undead residents of the Bayou State. She's a pivotal character in Books 2 and 3 of the Sookie Stackhouse novels on which the series is based (loosely, some would say).

I'm neck-deep in the midst of a vampire obsession. I'm
one of the Twi-hards eagerly awaiting the Nov. 20 release of Stephenie Meyer's next vamp-flick,
New Moon. I was immediately sucked into HBO's
True Blood, and can't wait for its return in May.
I recently sped through the short-lived
Moonlight and fell in love with Mick St. John. And its taken me all of about a week to get to season three of
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (though I don't know if I can take much more of the on again-off again romance of Buffy and Angel - don't tell me how it plays out).
I'm sure I'll be equally enthralled with
The CW pilot, Vampire Diaries. It doesn't hurt that
Steven R. McQueen, grandson of the legendary Steve McQueen has landed a lead role. I bet even those not as enamored with vamps will tune in just to see him: Does he look like his grandfather? Act like him? Have the same "something"?

How can we enter a new year without celebrating the last year's best and worst TV? Not a lot of the new shows were impressive, but I've been entertained for the last year, so I can't complain.
In making out my lists, I realized I must be a half-full type of gal, because even my worsts aren't that bad, and I had a heck of a time coming up with them.
So, here are my lovin'-life, lovin'-TV best and worst lists for 2008:
Best new show -- Leverage Man, I love everything about this show -- the chemistry between the characters, the quotable quotes, the clever jobs, the flashbacks. It's the most entertaining hour on television right now. Thank you, TNT!

I'm always ravenous for any
True Blood news, and this week,
EW.com's Michael Ausiello posted about
two new cast members joining the HBO vampire show.
Anna Camp has signed to play the series-regular role of Sarah, wife of Rev. Steve Newlin (Michael McMillian), the head-honcho preacher from the Fellowship of the Sun Church. The church is an anti-vampire religious sect, and I'm sure the addition of Sarah will shake things up good, since she hates vampires with a passion. Her character is described as in her late 20s, pretty, feminine, and part of the new hip evangelical movement. Camp is no stranger to controversial projects, as she's currently starring opposite Daniel Radcliffe in the Broadway production of
Equus.
Ashley Jones (Dr. Bridget Forrester on
The Bold and the Beautiful), has been tapped for a six-episode arc as Daphne, a new waitress at Merlotte's. Rumor has it that she won't be hanging up her stethoscope on the soap, but will juggle both shows. Hmmm, I'm seeing a blood theme in her roles.

...seven shows a-thrivin'I only have seven shows to list at the top of their game, whether its via ratings, critical reviews or both. Given the sheer volume of content available on both network and cable television, it's tough to narrow down the list to seven. On the other hand, this has been a
banner year for TV cancellations (and failed experiments as a result of green-lighting new series without commissioning a pilot first) so those that survived have been luckier than usual.
I have only included one reality TV show in the list and there probably should be more, but I don't like reality television and it's my list. So there. Nyah.

I was going to say that HBO's
True Blood is one of my favorite new shows this fall, but looking back on the season, I'd have to say it's my favorite, with
Fringe as a close second.
HBO continues to churn out some great shows, and
True Blood is no exception. Season one will be available on DVD May 12, 2009, with season two premiering that month, as well. I'm not sure how I'll hold out until then!
The vampire thriller earned
a Golden Globe nod today for Outstanding Drama Series, and creator
Alan Ball (who also helmed
Six Feet Under), dropped a few hints about what fans might expect in season two.
His comments contain a few spoilers, so I'll put them after the jump, in case you haven't finished watching season one yet.

One of the biggest victims in last year's Writers Guild strike was the Golden Globe awards. Fortunately, the SAG threats of a strike remain just that -- threats -- so the Globes are on and the nominations were announced this morning.
Unfortunately, there were few surprises among the TV noms. In fact, it's kind of worrisome that these nominations are way too similar to the Emmy nominations. Among the new network shows from this season, and last, very little.
NBC will broadcast the Golden Globes on January 11. For the complete list of the Globe noms, click
here, and for some instant impressions on said noms, read on after the jump:

Oh my. So much to be thankful for, even though the fall season hasn't been all that great. Here's my list:
Rogue agents. It's been Far.Too.Long since Jack Bauer has entered our living room, and we couldn't be more gleeful about his return - both the
24 movie and the series in January. Welcome back, Jack! We missed you! Well, my son and I have! My daughter and husband don't get you, but that's ok!
Mad scientists. That crazy Walter Bishop really brightens up our Tuesday nights around here. My son goes to school on Wednesday, talks about
Fringe with his buddies, then texts me back their thoughts on The Observer, the cylinders, Massive Dynamic and all the rest. Of course, Walter is the best thing about the show. We love him.

It's no big secret. People love their movies and TV shows based on vampire book series -- romantic vampire book series, to be exact. Proof of that will be
crowding your local multiplex this weekend thanks to the release of
Twilight, the teen vampire flick based on Stephenie Meyer's inescapable best-seller. (I'll guess I'll wait another week to catch
Role Models. Navigating through a sea of rabid teenage "Twilighters" isn't worth it. Sorry, Paul Rudd.)
Want more proof of the popularity of blood suckers? HBO execs are saying their freshman vampire series
True Blood, also based on a series of novels, is
developing an audience faster than The Sopranos, aka one of the most financially successful cable series in the history of TV. Michael Lombardo, HBO's chief of West Coast operations, says that
The Sopranos' viewership numbers grew slowly. The big ratings jump didn't come until season two. But
True Blood has fared better, with a 66 percent jump in Sunday night viewership since its premiere in September.
