The miniseries
Torchwood: Children of Earth was a huge ratings and critical success. It was only a matter of time before show creator Russell T. Davies started talking, officially, about moving ahead with another season of
Torchwood.
Davies told
TV Guide that
Torchwood is likely to be renewed for a fourth season. The BBC
has yet to officially green-light a fourth year, but Davies said he's already working on ideas for the further adventures of Captain Jack Harkness and crew.
"The recession has hit British television, but fingers crossed, it will be a go. We expect things to start to move in January. We've got great ideas for the show. I think there's a further lease on life for many years to come, but certainly for a [fourth season]," Davies said.

Earlier this month,
we asked you if you wanted a season four of
Torchwood. Early responses seemed to say yes, and then we got deluged with people who were fed up with their favorite characters dying and who weren't entirely impressed with the
Torchwood: Children of Earth mini-series that was season three.
Well, there is going to be a season four, and
Torchwood Magazine got the scoop (Dammit! How'd they manage that?). According to the magazine,
Torchwood creator and writer Russell T. Davies already has several storylines worked out, and knows what happens to the characters that did survive seasons two and three. He's not sure if it will be another mini-series or a 13-episode season, but he does know what he'd include.

A couple of weeks removed from the American showing of
Torchwood: Children of Earth, the mini-series that served as the
Dr. Who spinoff's third season, I am still thinking about what a season four would look like. I've been a fan of the show since the first series, and I have liked the
Torchwood team and admired the writing.
But the ending of
Children of Earth complicated things. At the end of season two, two major characters died, then COE killed off another. The immortal, normally untouchable Captain Jack Harkness had been compromised to the point where he had to leave the planet, and Gwen was pregnant and happily married. So what would a fourth season even look like?
I would hate to see
Torchwood: Baby Boomer, with Gwen balancing the baby with fighting aliens, and all the clichés that come with the balancing-a-job-and-motherhood plots from movies and television past. But then, series creator and writer Russell T. Davies has done a fantastic job of avoiding the predictable, so I'd be willing to take that leap of faith to see what he comes up with. And Davies is already on record as saying that Captain Jack is "
fundamental to Torchwood."

If you're a regular viewer of the BBC sci-fi series
Torchwood, you're more than aware of the recent dust up between fans and writers over a major character death in this past season's finale. Angry fans immediately ran to message boards to express their displeasure with the direction the show has taken, but now, that angry fan reaction seems to have taken a sudden and serious turn for the worse.
Before we get too far into this, I'm putting a spoiler warning on this post, even though the episode in question has already aired in the U.S. For anyone still saving it on their DVR, beware. It's a biggie.

Show of hands: how many people here watch both
Torchwood and
Desperate Housewives? Well, your dreams might be answered.
Torchwood star
John Barrowman revealed on a British talk show this week that he is going to Los Angeles to meet with the producers of the ABC drama for a role. Though he didn't say what role it would be.
Maybe he can play the same character he plays on
Torchwood, add a little sci-fi to the show. Wouldn't that be unbelievably wild? That's why it would never happen.

Reports flooded out of Comic Con International that a fourth season of
Torchwood was all but a lock based on its spectacular ratings on both sides of the Atlantic.
That would make sense when you consider the third mini-season ("Children of Earth") pulled in north of 6 milllion viewers a night in the U.K. and is now BBC America's all-time highest rated show. Why wouldn't the BBC want to bring it back?
But, in an informal discussion in Los Angeles Wednesday, Russell T. Davies told me the fourth season has not been officially approved, despite previous reports.

Here are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.I have a feeling a lot of DVD sets are going to be sold this week. Rabid fans of
Battlestar Galactica,
Dollhouse,
Doctor Who, and
Torchwood all have something to buy. If you didn't/don't watch any of those shows ... well, you can always buy season two of
The Donna Reed Show. That's one classic sitcom that I never really got into. Not sure why. I loved
Leave it to Beaver and
I Love Lucy and
Father Knows Best, but not
The Donna Reed Show. Probably because it wasn't on as much as those other shows.
- Battlestar Galactica - Season 4.5 and Complete Series
- Doctor Who - Planet of the Dead
- Dollhouse - Season 1

A
Torchwood panel headlined by Russell T. Davies and John Barrowman was the last big event of Comic-Con International this year. While it didn't pack any huge revelations, it did come with good news for fans. The show will return for a full season in 2010.
The BBC decided to make the show's third season, "Children of Earth," into a week-long miniseries event. It was a huge ratings success in the U.K. and fared well on BBC American in the U.S. So, the Beeb is giving it a longer run.

Online sources have been informed that
Torchwood has been
picked up for a fourth season. This is not surprising considering the excellent ratings received by the BBC for Season 3, despite relegating that season to a five-episode mini-series.
Spoilers follow. You have been warned.
The brilliant thing about the next season of
Torchwood is that the creators have a chance to start from scratch.
Ianto is dead. Jack is gone. Gwen is pregnant. Gwen could decide after the baby is born to start a new team. Or, Jack could come back. Or Ianto could return from the dead (it's happened on the show before).
The powers that be could even decide to start a new team from scratch, although I think something would be missing without at least Captain Jack around. Torchwood (the organization, not the show) has gone through many incarnations and survived much worse than the slaughter or dissolution of a particular set of members. Whatever is decided, I look forward to it.

So much for a happy ending.
With
Children of Earth's critical success and record UK ratings, I'm certain show creator Russell T. Davies will get the chance to bring
Torchwood back to TV next year. But how can he? (Spoilers ahead).

A certain something happened on
Torchwood, and I won't spoil it the plot development here. You can
read Mike's review of the episode (again, SPOILERS!). The show's creator, Russell T. Davies, says he understands that fans of the show might not be happy with what happened, but I don't think that his response to them will get him any new fans.

SPOILERS! No griping, all ye who pass here and have not visited episode four on their DVR.
Read Mike Moody' s review
here. Okay, last chance if you haven't seen episode four already, here we go....
Ianto isn't dead. He just isn't, okay. I know, I know, we saw him succumb to the gas and die in Jack's arms. I know they said their goodbyes, I know Gwen pulled back the sheet and he was all pale and looked not at all well, and he was in the room with all the dead people under the orange sheets. And I saw everyone talking about how they'll miss him in the
Torchwood special after the episode. I saw all the same things you did.
I don't know what's going to happen in episode five, but I can't conceive of it involving Ianto actually being dead. He and Jack are too much fun, and their relationship is too different from anything else on television, and it just got started. I don't know what kind of dues ex machine, Alec Guinness on Endor has to happen, but I'll be looking for it.

OK folks, let's pull ourselves together now. Yes, this was
Torchwood's darkest hour, but tonight is ass-kicking time, right? Right?
Honestly, I'm not really sure how it's all gonna end, but that's what I'm loving about
Children of Earth. The miniseries has kept me guessing from the start, and it's kept me on the edge of my seat all week with damn fine storytelling and some great performances. (Please, Internet, tell me a full season order is in the can for next year!)
