Yesterday at Christie's in New York,
Tony Soprano's costumes went up for auction. You not going to believe how much money a bloody wifebeater goes for these days. One fan of the show paid $43,750 for the outfit pictured to the right: a bloody tank, a stained button down shirt, and pants. The outfit was the one the Jersey mob boss wore when Uncle Junior mistakenly shot him.
Also up for bid was a four-piece set containing boxers, a robe, a sleeveless undershirt, and a pair of slippers (a costume Gandolfini donned many times on the show). It took home $21,250. Another robe (the tan one with an "S" monogram that Gandolfini wore in the pilot) went for $13.750. Overall, the iconic mafia boss's clothes brought in over $185,000.

If you're in the camp that believes that Tony was whacked by the Members-Only jacketed man in the final blackout of
The Sopranos, then you'll probably be pleased to know that Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito Jr. has taken a shot at the HBO drama, too.
During a recent
speech at New Jersey's Rutgers University, Justice Alito opined that the Emmy-winning series besmirched not only Italians, but citizens of the Garden State, too. "You have a trifecta - gangsters, Italian-Americans, New Jersey - wedded in the popular American imagination," he said to a crowd of about 100. He was speaking about the stereotypes Italian-Americans have had to live with in the United States. Clearly,
The Sopranos would be just the kind of depiction to draw his ire. After all, Uncle Junior and Paulie Walnuts are not characters to be emulated and admired, and creator David Chase never said they were.

HBO hasn't been able to replicate the success of its biggest hit to date, The Sopranos, but that doesn't seem to bother its subscribers. According to Reuters, even experts such as senior analyst Deana Myers, who's been tracking premium cable viewing patterns for the past decade, are surprised. While she says "it did seem like it was going to go down," those numbers in fact increased slightly. Apparently the viewers weren't hanging onto HBO just to see how the saga of mobster Tony Soprano turned out after all.

(S06E21) It's finally here, folks. The week that we've all been waiting for. Well, perhaps not
that anxiously awaiting, as we know that something we've all been into for so many years is going away. That said, it's still something that has the potential of being very, very cool culturally and will definitely dominate the watercooler talk for the next few days or so.

(S06E20) We had two weeks to wait for a new episode of
The Sopranos, and the powers that be didn't throw us a double insult by making this week's show a waste of our time, that's for sure. Our own Rich Keller
wrote a couple of days ago about a
New York Post item suggesting that this week would be the culmination of the series and next week would settle us up. Not too far off the map, I'd have to say, either.
Big surprises aside (we'll save the spoilers for after the jump), it was great to see Artie and his restaurant (and New York Jets coach Eric Mangini with his wife) make an appearance, and the monstrous amount of foreshadowing that the opening scene showed us was pretty damn intoxicating, if you ask me. Hell, a good part of me forgot about all the little plotlines that were left open for us to ponder over the years. We're definitely going to get a run for our money in next week's episode, so if you haven't watched this week's yet, then fire up your DVR and get to it before finishing this post.

With the series finale of HBO's The Sopranos fast approaching (a week from this Sunday, to be exact) speculation is running wild as to what's going to become of Tony Soprano and his companions. The biggest question is whether or not Tony will alive or dead when the final credits role.
Michael Starr of the New York Post is betting that we'll know something about the series finale after the next-to-last episode airs this Sunday. Starr believes that this week's episode could be the one that features a final battle between Tony and his enemies, while the last episode could be the one that ties everything up in a tidy package, leaving Tony alive and kicking. Few clues are being given in episode description. For example, for this week's episode, "The Blue Comet", HBO writes 'The allegiance of those closest to Tony is put to the test and a case of mistaken identity has serious ramifications.' Not much to decipher from that notice, is there?
Its also been reported that show creator David Chase, who co-wrote this Sunday's episode and wrote and directed the series finale, has filmed several endings to The Sopranos to throw everyone off as to the fate of Tony. My guess is that Tony will wake up from a dream and Suzanne Pleshette will be there in bed next to him. Hey, it worked before!

(S06E15) Last week's promos showed Paulie in what looked like a rough situation or two, most of which featured Tony's glare right on him. That all started after Paulie made a snide remark, or more specifically was talking about himself, when the guys were toasting to Johnny Sack's life after he had passed away from cancer. As it turned out, he was absolutely in the sights of Tony when it came to life and death. And in an episode when someone is having loose lips and putting the boss in a tough situation as the body of the person that he killed to "make his bones" more than two decades earlier was apparently being dug up by the feds, the focus on Paulie being a chatterbox about his entire life story was more than appropriate.
One of the cooler things we got to see this week was Vincent Pastore's mug, as he was hanging out in the kitchen in Paulie's dream, a dream that made him want to step up to the plate, and realize that he was on his boss' bad side. Whether or not Tony just couldn't do it when it came to whacking his friend and onetime mentor or that he realized he was making a rash decision wasn't quite clear. What did happen was that we got the do-si-do from Chase & Company, who had us flat-out staring at the Jersey Crew while the New York team was about to head in another direction.

(S06E14) When we were first introduced to Chrissie's concept of
Cleaver as a flick, I never really thought it'd see the light of day. But when the red carpet was rolled out this week, it looked like not only would it do that, but it could have been Christopher's shining moment in the family. As it turns out, maybe that last part isn't going to be the case. My prediction last week about Christopher's screen time turned out to be off base - so far, at least - but based on Tony's reaction to how the "boss" character in the film was portrayed, and how the portrayal resembled some of the events that had happened in the last few years, maybe Christopher might not see that much more daylight after all.
I'm very much into the disarray that the New York family is having right now. Aside from the fact that no one really seems to want to show real leadership skills, they're not exactly looking like model mob citizens compared to what the Jersey boys are doing right now.

Basic cable channel A&E bought the syndication rights to
The Sopranos, and now the network is busy trying to clean up the show for its audience. What can and can't they air? It's a fine line that basically says blood is okay but brain spatter is not. Case in point: the last episode of season one has Jimmy Altieri getting whacked with one bullet to the back of his head. When the episode aired on HBO, the audience saw blood spatter on the wall and chunks of brain slide down the wall. A&E's audience won't see the brains. There are about one hundred other instances where executives have to make similar decisions about violence, language and nudity. The newly edited versions of
The Sopranos air on A&E in January.
I'm wondering if it's even worth the effort. A&E bought the right to air all 85 episodes of
The Sopranos... for a staggering $2.5 million per episode. But how much fun is it really going to be without all the naughty stuff?

You probably didn't know this but, according to research performed by Warner Brothers, there will be 25 to 28 million households with HDTV consoles by the end of this year. To all of you I have one thing to say: can you please send some bling my way so I can be added to that list of households? Oh, and add in about $130 so I can purchase The Sopranos Season 6 (Part 1) on hi-def DVD.
Yes, you heard me right! The Sopranos will be the first TV series to be released on the emerging HD-DVD format. HBO Video states that the hi-def set, which will average $129.99, $30 more than the standard DVD version, will arrive in stores on November 7th. HBO also said that a Blu-ray Disc version of Season 6 (Part 1) will be available next year.
For those of you still using those primitive low-def DVD players, HD-DVD and Blu-ray Disc are the next generation optical-disc formats competing for dominance in the the ever growing HDTV market. Currently, there are only two brands of HD-DVD machines in the market, and they are both made by the electronics giant Toshiba.

(S06E07) The only hitch I find in coming up with a show as popular - or entertaining - as
The Sopranos is that when the plot gets a little thin from one week to another, it's more and more disappointing. Sure, seeing a hit on one of the New York crew evolve and watching Christopher have a bit of fun with Sir Ben Kingsley was a hoot, but a whole week dedicated to how Artie's restaurant is having some issues? All right, I guess.
Last week's promo showed Christopher asking Tony about heading out West with Little Carmine to work on potentially bringing in Kingsley to the slasher-meets-Mafia flick that they're attempting to pitch one of these days. Of course, that goes about how you'd expect it - poorly - but not before Chrissie spends a bit of time with a local working woman (the comments about her most likely silicone-enhanced breasts were key), and falls somewhat off the wagon. I guess at least he had the sense to call in his sponsor, right? Yeah, didn't think so.

Tony Soprano is a scumbag.
Now don't get me wrong, he's probably the most likable and well received scumbag since Archie Bunker, but he's still a
scumbag. He continuously cheats on his wife, takes advantage of other's weaknesses, does drugs, and is just an overall
bully. Yes, I'm aware that he's a mob boss, but that still doesn't change his characteristics. Almost dying will change
a man though, and for Tony, he really seems to be at odds with himself since his time in
purgatory. After attending
Allegra's wedding this past
episode, Tony seems to be questioning his ways even more. He realized just how close he came to the pearly gates, and
wants to make sure that he's around to be in his family's life. He wants to see Meadow get married and become a mother,
the things that any
normal father would want and expect as well. He's feeling intimidated and weak, something
the Tony Soprano of old never would have felt. So my question to you is this-- Is Tony a changed man? Are his days with
the "family" numbered, or his he just still "getting over" the shooting? Personally, I'd like to
hope he is changed, but you know the saying, "a zebra can't change his stripes."

Were "two great
tastes that taste great together" combined and we didn't even realize it? I happened to come across
an article from The
Star-Ledger (in a New Jersey paper of course), which goes in to detail about a theory that Tony Soprano
wasn't dead, he was in Purgatory. The author has personal contact with David Chase (
The Sopranos creator and
driving force) and after he referred to the two episodes as a "dream sequence," Chase quickly scuttled that
word. After hearing the author's thoughts about it being Purgatory, it made perfect sense to me.
Wikipedia defines Purgatory as "
a place or condition of
temporal punishment for those who, departing this life in God's grace are not entirely free from venial faults, or have
not fully paid the satisfaction due to their transgressions". Not only was Tony's brief life as Kevin Finnerty
temporal punishment by sheer lack of ... well anything, but Sopranos family members have referenced Purgatory in the
past, Paulie in particular; he stated that he had come to grips with the fact that he was going to have to spend X
amount of time there before he finally got to the pearly gates.
