Justine Bateman tries her hand at sitcom writing

Justine BatemanGive Justine Bateman credit: She could have been typecast after playing the dippy, fashion-obsessed Mallory Keaton on Family Ties, but she's been able to build a nice career for herself over the last twenty years by playing interesting supporting roles in movies like The TV Set and series like Desperate Housewives. But she's also been -- just like 75% of the people in Hollywood -- an aspiring writer, struggling to get her scripts produced (and you think having connections helps ... she knows Michael J. Fox and her brother is Jason Bateman, and she still couldn't get her scripts produced).

But now she can add "sitcom writer" to her credits; she just wrote an episode of The Disney Channel's hit Wizards of Waverly Place, according to the New York Daily News. Apparently, she's a friend of executive producer Peter Murrieta, and she got to know some of the show's writers during the writers' strike. So, when the strike ended, she was invited to write an episode for the show.

Vanessa Hudgens signed for High School Musical 3

High School MusicalAccording to MSNBC, Vanessa Hudgens has signed on for Disney's High School Musical 3 reprising her role of Gabriella Montez. She's even getting a pay increase. This is despite the infamous compromising (i.e. nude) photos of her that circulated around the Internet not too long ago.

I was coerced into watching the original High School Musical by my niece. It was accurately described by my brother as "Grease, the Next Generation". It was cute, but nothing great. Like any old codger, I fail to understand why this phenomenon even took hold. But, it did. (On a side note, I don't even get why any parent would name their kid "Sharpay" unless they were really cruel.)

Satellite TV coming to your local minivan

See the Disney Channel in Chrysler minivansAfter years of blissful silence (or disruptful screaming) in your minivan, thanks to the built-in DVD player that's standard in many models these days, another advancement in technology has popped up to put your children into a further catatonic state. On Thursday DaimlerChrysler announced it was pairing with Sirius Satellite Radio (?) to begin broadcasting limited satellite TV service in its 2008 Dodge and Chrysler minivans.

According to the Associated Press, Sirius will broadcast three kid-friendly channels -- Cartoon Network, The Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. This deal will be exclusive between Sirius and the automotive company until next year (or until Sirius and XM merge, I guess.) After that, the satellite company can sell there wares to other organizations. This little addition doesn't come free, however. An extra $500 will be added to the cost of the vehicle for this service and, after one year, you will need to pay $20 a month for the Sirius radio service and TV channels. In the future more channels may be added to the lineup.
