What You Missed Last Night: Top ten Northwest pilot excuses

We've all heard about the Northwest Airlines pilots that flew their plane full of passengers 150 miles past their destination. First they said they were arguing and not sleeping, then yesterday it came out that they were on their laptops. Probably on Facebook.

Last night, David Letterman had a list of the top ten excuses the pilots made.

What You Missed Last Night: Paul Shaffer on Jimmy Kimmel Live

It's not a regular thing to see late night hosts appear on other late night shows. But I think it was great that The Late Show with David Letterman's Paul Shaffer was given the okay to appear on Jimmy Kimmel Live to not only plug his new book but also play with the band. I can't imagine Kevin Eubanks coming over to The Late Show and doing the same.

He also talked about his love for Las Vegas and Jerry Lewis. They don't do the split screen right though. Shouldn't they be looking straight ahead instead of at each other?

What You Missed Last Night: Signs your toddler watches too much TV

Let's face it, the Top Ten list on The Late Show with David Letterman can be hit or miss some nights (and just miss other nights). But they can still make lists where every entry is pretty damn funny. That happened last night, as Letterman presented the "Top Ten Signs Your Toddler Watches Too Much Television." Hey, it's TV-related so it's a perfect list for us.

Finally, Letterman does something we've all been wanting to do

Geico moneyNo, not that.

I'm talking about the clip after the jump. Letterman is sitting alone in his office reading the paper when he's visited by a certain ad mascot. I think we've all had the desire to do that to the thing but we haven't found it on our desks.

(Note: some people are saying that since this aired the night before Letterman's blackmailer was arrested that this was a subtle call out to the blackmailer. But I don't really see it, since, as Aaron Barnhart says, Letterman doesn't write the sketches and probably didn't tell his writers about the scandal.)

Now I know why Stephanie Birkitt was a tough interview to get

Stephanie BirkittIn the wayback days of my entertainment journalism career (2004, to be precise), I had written a few poorly-executed but fun articles for a wonderful little site called Knot Magazine (not to be confused with The Knot, a website which I'm unfortunately all too familiar with these days). After publishing a couple of my missives, the editor had an idea for me: why not interview that spunky assistant Dave Letterman has on his show?

Sounded like a cool idea. It's not like Stephane Birkitt hadn't been interviewed before; she had spoken to a couple of papers from her alma mater and her hometown, and seemed approachable. And it would have been a fun story to try to figure out how she went from anonymous assistant to the girl who talked about her weekend on the phone to the on-stage presence Dave often called "Vicki." How hard could it be to get an interview?

Almost impossible, I found out.

What should happen to Letterman?

LettermanDavid Letterman's confession last Thursday was the last we've heard from him on the subject (Friday's show is taped earlier in the week - he returns tonight). The columnists and pundits and fans have had their say, though. Some people defend him, some dislike him, and some aren't fazed by it at all.

But beyond the "creepy" factor of it (that's Dave's own word), what about the moral and/or legal side of it? Should Letterman be fired? Reprimanded? Will he be sued? Should people stop watching him? Should advertisers leave his show? Should one of the women come out and do a "Ten Things About Dating David Letterman" list?

What should happen to Letterman?

Subtle Subtitles: Madonna

Cougar Town
If you haven't seen our game before, we give you a picture from a recent episode of a TV series and you provide the caption!

Last week's winner is Fred with this: "You do know you're not a real cougar, right? You don't have to clean your paws."

This week's photo is from Madonna's appearance on The Late Show this week:

Madonna has never had New York pizza?

Didn't Madonna make her mark in New York City years ago? Then how did she not ever have a slice of New York City pizza? Last night she told Dave about that, so he ordered one for her (she doesn't like cheese - that figures). They also touched on A-Rod, her previous appearances, and why she'd rather be hit by a train than get married again.

She's still an idiot, but she really looks great. Here are highlights from the interview.

President Obama to appear on Letterman this Monday

President Barack ObamaWriting about this is just asking for trouble from the more politically extreme, but it's television news so I'm writing about it. President Barack Obama will be appearing on The Late Show with David Letterman this coming Monday, Sept. 21. He is the sole guest and will take up the full hour of the program.

It is the first time a sitting U.S. President will be appearing on Letterman's CBS show. Obama is likely trying to promote his new health care reform. Usually a television appearance like this one is reserved for those on the campaign trail for the office. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Why stop with Letterman? He could stay another hour on CBS and appear on Craig Ferguson. And why not appear on Leno's new show? Or Conan? Or Jimmy Fallon? Or even Jimmy Kimmel? However, the President is likely a busy man and doesn't want to spread himself too thin. Letterman will do for now.

What You Missed Last Night: Matt Damon isn't dead and George Clooney isn't gay

Matt Damon was on The Late Show last night to promote his new film The Informant! As usual, he did his Matthew McConaughey impersonation for Dave and they also talked about a recent web rumor that Damon had died (really? I guess I missed that one).

This led to Damon telling another story about the Venice Film Festival involving George Clooney, Brad Pitt, and a stripping journalist.

Comic fulfills dream to appear on Letterman's show

I watched this stand-up performance by comic Steve Mazan the other night on The Late Show. I thought he was very funny and he went over well with the crowd. Only today did I realize he has inoperable cancer and his life's dream was to appear on the show.

He's making a documentary of his quest, Dying To Do Letterman. I can't imagine the emotions that were going through him as he did his set.

What You Missed Last Night: Anna Wintour does not play baseball

Vogue editor (and Devil Wears Prada subject) Anna Wintour was on The Late Show last night. She came out in her trademark sunglasses but didn't wear them for the interview (that would have been fantastic). After talking to Dave about her work and a new documentary about her, he talked to her about playing baseball with the next guest Mark Texiera. Sadly, she didn't want to. It would have been great to see Wintour shagging flies.

Letterman's mom turns 88 and does the Top Ten List

If I were to pick my top ten favorite things in the history of late night television, the appearances by David Letterman's mom Dorothy would be on that list. She seems like a nice lady, and they always manage to find something funny for her to do on the show. Last week she turned 88, and via satellite from Indiana she gave the "Top Ten Ways Dave's Mom Is Celebrating Her Birthday."

Batting Stance Guy gets a job on Fox Sports Network

I'm proud to live in a country where a guy who imitates the batting stances of major league baseball players can get gigs. Gar Ryness, The Batting Stance Guy, has signed a deal with Fox Sports Network do create content for regional coverage of ball games. He's also going to be on Kansas City Royals telecasts.

Here's a clip of his recent appearance on The Late Show. He's a very funny guy as well as doing great batting stances (his Kevin Youklis is better than his Manny Ramirez).

Paul McCartney visits The Late Show

It's hard to believe but last night was the first time that Paul McCartney was on The Late Show with David Letterman.

As Letterman says in the clip below, they had been trying to get him for 15 years with no success. McCartney had been in the studio before, of course, as a member of The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964 (and once for MTV), but this was his first time on Dave's show. He talks about coming to America back then and what the other band members were like.

(Here's video of the performance from McCartney and his band.)
