Jim Gaffigan: The TV Squad interview - VIDEOS

Actor and comedian Jim GaffiganActor and comedian Jim Gaffigan has come a long way from driving down the stock price for Hot Pockets.

He landed his own short-lived sitcom on CBS, thanks to David Letterman, called Welcome to New York and a co-starring role on the hit TBS' dramedy My Boys, which returns for a third season on March 31.

He also racked up a long resume of funny and dramatic roles on hit shows like Sex and the City, Flight of the Conchords, and That 70's Show. He is also one of the few actors to score appearances on all of the Law & Order series if you don't count the spinoff that hardcore L&O cultists are forbidden to say out loud.

Valderrama cast in comedy The Emancipation of Ernesto

valderrama"This is the first script I've read that made me excited to come back to TV," said the actor about his latest project. The actor is Wilmer Valderrama; the project is a Fox comedy pilot called The Emancipation of Ernesto.

Wilmer, who is best-known from his eight seasons on That '70s Show -- a supporting player on the Fox mainstay -- will be front and center on this new one-hour, single camera comedy. He's Ernesto, and Ernesto is a quirky character.

The show is citing two 1979 films -- for starters -- as reminiscent of The Emancipation of Ernesto: Steve Martin's The Jerk, as well as Chauncey Gardiner, the Peter Seller's character in Being There. Why? Well, it's the Ernesto character.

Fez caught playing with Dolls

Wilmer ValderramaMTV is hooking up with That '70s Show's Fez (Wilmer Valderrama) to develop a scripted comedy that takes a look at celebrity worship. The series, titled Baby Dolls, which will be filmed in documentary style, is told from the point of view of "a naive and jaded personal assistant to a young actress." Naive and jaded? So this person has a lack of experience, judgment or knowledge about the world but is hardworking and completely worn out by all the energy he or she puts into the job? Sounds like a job for Kenneth the Page from 30 Rock!

Or I guess Valderrama could play the role himself. He certainly played the role of "naive" to a T in That '70s Show and hasn't been doing much TV work outside of getting Punk'd by fellow '70s co-star Ashton Kutcher from time to time. Doesn't he know that there's a legion of Fez-natics out here just waiting for him to grace our screens again. Hell, keep it the same character ... Fez twenty years later working as a personal assistanta. "Would you like me to powder your breasts with my nose?"

The upstanding Det. Scanlon(S04E12) I had all but forgotten about Kurtwood Smith. I've been a big fan ever since Robocop and this character is really fun to watch. I only wish the writers had given his character a different name. Every time someone calls him Agent Cooper, I flashback to Twin Peaks and I feel like I'm betraying Medium by wishing that Peaks was still on the air.

One of the best things about Smith is how he can be so menacing while still keeping a smile on his face. In fact, I find him scarier when he smiles. I felt the same way when Red would actually say something nice to a member of his family on That 70's Show.

Supernatural: Hollywood Babylon

jared padalecki, gary cole, jensen ackles

(S02E18)
They don't do much in the way of developing the big mysteries, but I do like it when the Supernatural team takes time out to have some fun. Such was the case this week with "Hollywood Babylon." If it was the overall style of the show, I don't think it would work nearly as well. But as an every once in a while thing, these tongue-in-cheek, laugh at yourself, episodes are a fun diversion from the norm. Although, I would have preferred to see this one and "Tall Tales" separated a little more on the schedule.

The 14 greatest TV eateries

happy days arnold'sWelcome to TV Squad Lists (formerly 'The Five'), a feature where each blogger has a chance to list his or her own rundown of things in television that stand out from the rest, both good and bad.

Last week I gave you a pretty big list of popular "drinkeries" from TV, but I think where I went wrong was trying too hard to list every watering hole possible. Since I'm covering eateries this week, I'm certain I'll miss some of your favorites, but I'm going to list what I believe to be the most popular dining spots from television, both past and present. And since there are way too many real spots on TV to mention (Hell's Kitchen, Kitchen Stadium, etc.), I'll stick with fictional spots, even if they're based on real ones.

This time let's go with 14 of them.

1) Arnold's/Al's Drive-In (Happy Days) -- I struggled for a bit with what I would call the number one eatery on TV, but I kept coming back to this spot. Arnold's/Al's was in nearly every episode as far as I can recall, and of course housed The Fonz's office. After it burned down, the signage changed to Al's.

Medium: Profiles In Terror

Kurtwood Smith(S03E06) I think that most people probably thought of Red Foreman when they saw Kurtwood Smith in the previews for this episode. Any actor that does a role for that long is going to be tied to it to some degree. Especially if it is something like That 70's Show which is in syndication so you are constantly stumbling over it. But it is a credit to Kurtwood that while I was secretly hoping for him to call someone a dumb-ass the whole time, he made Edward Cooper something completely different.

Cooper is an interesting character. At once the hero, and the villain. I suspected going in that there would be some butting of the heads as his clinical studying of the evidence clashed with Allison's visions. And we did get some of that. It was made even better with the first round going to Cooper. He was so smarmy and confident as he shot Allison down again and again. It seemed to set up perfectly for Allison to eventually be proven right and get the "I told you so" moment that she wanted so badly.

CBS wants to see a Genius pilot

cbs logoCBS wants to see what happens when the cool kids at Abercrombie & Fitch mingle with the computer geeks at the Apple Store Genius Bar. The show is called Genius Bar and all four major networks thought it was pretty great. After a bidding war, the idea landed at CBS. Genius Bar is being created by Josh Sternin and Jeff Ventimilia, two producers of That '70s Show.

It's interesting- the idea for the show actually came from a marketing guru named Krishnan Menon, whose company is responsible for major marketing campaigns for the iPod and iMac.

Veronica Mars theme remix - VIDEO

Veronica Mars openIt's something that happens fairly often, and I never understand the reasoning behind it. A show is motoring right along and then a new season starts and someone has decided to redo the theme song. I remember it happening on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and That 70's Show, and I'm sure many others. Now, with season three, Veronica Mars has joined the club. For those scoring at home, season three was also when they made the change for Buffy.

The Dandy Warhols song, "We Used To Be Friends", is still the theme song, but now it's been remixed into a stripped down, more ethereal track. It's not bad, but it's not better either. Personally, I prefer the original. Watch the new open after the jump and let us know what you think.

[ thanks Wilhem ]

What's on tonight: Will and Grace, CSI, Without A Trace, ER, The O.C., David Spade

  • That 70s ShowAt 8, ABC has a repeat American Inventor (because everyone has been asking for repeats), and then the finale. It's followed by a new Primetime.
  • CBS has a repeat CSI, followed by the season finale and then the season finale of Without A Trace.
  • NBC has a Will and Grace retrospective at 8, followed by the series finale. Then it's the season finale of ER (which stars early because the Will and Grace finale is supersized).
  • Over on FOX at 8, the series finale of That 70s Show, followed by the season finale of The O.C.
  • Also at 8: AMC has my favorite Bond movie, Goldfinger.
  • At 9 on CNN, Larry King talks to the cast of 60 Minutes.
  • At 10, Spike has a new Ultimate Fighter.
  • At 10: 30, Comedy Central has a new The Showbiz Show With David Spade.

The O.C. moves to later timeslot

seth
summer ocPerhaps it's a move that will open up the 8 o'clock hour for American Idol during late February and early March, since FOX is airing the results shows for the semi-finals on Thursday nights. FOX is moving The O.C. to the 9 o'clock hour, from the 8 o'clock slot its held since the first season. That time slot is now open, thanks to the cancellation of Reunion. The move happens on January 12, when new episodes of The O.C. return. FOX's announcement also gives a hint of what's to come in the second half of this season on The O.C. Ryan, Summer, and Seth launch a plan to get Marissa back into Harbor in time for graduation. One of the upcoming episodes, called "The Safe Harbor", is a tribute to an episode of Beverly Hills 90210 where the gang fought to get Donna to graduate. Plus, there's that whole college thing that still needs to be figured out. Where will they all go so we can continue to watch The O.C.?

Sliding into The O.C.'s old time slot are back-to-back episodes of That 70s Show. At least, until Idol takes over.
