NBC settles on David Gregory for Meet the Press

MTP GregoryThey passed the torch on NBC yesterday. After weeks of speculation, it wasn't either Ted Koppel or Rachel Maddow that received the choice assignment. Nope. It's David Gregory who'll take over Meet the Press -- effective immediately. On Sunday morning's broadcast, interim host and NBC anchorman emeritus Tom Brokaw made it official by officially letting the world know it was a done deal by presenting Gregory on air.

Apparently, some at NBC were miffed that this information was leaked last week, spoiling the big surprise today, but really, there wasn't much suspense. Joel wrote about it. The selection of David Gregory is a safe, solid and somewhat staid choice.

Jon Stewart"Indecision 2008": In an incredibly awkward blunder, one of John McCain's top advisers, Charlie Black, told Fortune magazine that another terrorist attack on America would be "a big advantage" to McCain. Also, the assassination of Benazir Bhutto apparently saved McCain's struggling campaign back in December. Dude. There is no way to fix the sense that your campaign thrives on death and destruction, apart from some panicked back-pedaling and angry refusal by the candidate himself. Jon Stewart broke down the situation in simple mathematic terms and -- Ahh, nevermind.

Ted KoppelAfter last night's interview with Chris Matthews, I suppose Jon felt the need to reiterate the fact that he just disagrees with the "life is a campaign" thought. The self-deprecating jokes were a nice touch, kind of a sweet gesture to Matthews to show that Jon is an equal opportunity mocker.

"Private Benjamins": Rob Riggle stopped by to share his script, Dark Liquid, which is alarmingly close to the state of Blackwater right now. This was okay, I suppose. I did quite like the idea of being able to shoot blood diamonds and wear panda fur, though. The historical clip was kind of, sort of funny, but I was mainly distracted by how poorly done it was. Was there no professional graphic designer on hand? Come on!

Jon StewartSorry for the late post, folks, but it's Finals week and I'm up to my eyeballs in anxiety. Jon Stewart doesn't have to deal with Finals and work in a studio until 5:00 AM. All he has to do is produce, write, and present a show four days a week. Lazy bastard.

Anyway, Hillary Clinton is making the entertainment show rounds, side-by-side with Britney "Hey, y'all! There are flowers on my boobies!" Spears. It was disturbing to see her act giddy about shoes... I mean, I know she's a woman and all, but... she's Hillary Clinton. "Oh, my God. Hillary Clinton is running as Cathy."

Jon Stewart"Jack in the Box": Correspondent Jason Jones talked about how Jack Abramoff is going to fare in minimum security prison. Ho-hum. Let's get to the good stuff...

"Drown Syndrome": Waterboarding! CNN's Rick "OMG Taser Me!" Sanchez didn't even touch it. The folks over at FOX News tried to give it a go, but it kind of sucked. Senior Interrogation Correspondent Rob Riggle (listed as "Rob", heh) investigated the waterboarding issue from a new angle, in the position of the guy with the black mask and bucket of water. Best line: Regarding the waterboardee... "I lured this guy with a fake Craigslist ad."
