With Clay Aiken having wrapped up his run as Sir Robin in Spamalot, the Idol quotient on Broadway was down. Fortunately for theatergoers, it's Taylor Hicks to the rescue. Kind of. He's a bit of a step down from Clay Aiken, isn't he? I mean, Clay's new album debuted at number four, and Taylor was dropped from his label.
Whichever way you see it, Hicks will be joining the cast of Grease to take on the role of Teen Angel. Should you be in the area, you can head over to the Brooks Atkinson Theater and hear his version of "Beauty School Dropout." An interesting TV side-note, this production of Grease stars Laura Osnes and Max Crumm. You may remember them as being the winners of the ill-fated NBC show, You're The One That I Want.

The fine folks over at AOL Television put together their "
11 Biggest American Idol Cliches," but as the self-proclaimed guru of all things
Idol, I figured my legions of fan (yes it's singular on purpose) are clamoring for my take. You have to figure that after nearly eight years on the air any show is going to rack up it's long, long list of annoying things.
And yet, I don't get nearly as annoyed when Jeff Probst yells "Come on in guys. [Team A] getting their first look at the new [Team B]. [Contestant Name] voted out at the last tribal council," even though he does it every single week. "[Team members], you're the last team to arrive. I'm sorry to tell you that you've both been eliminated from
The Amazing Race." No big deal. So why do Ryan, Simon and the gang at
American Idol drive us so crazy week after week?

How much cooler would it be to send your stalker letter to Kelly Clarkson with a Kelly Clarkson stamp? As Ryan Seacrest announced on last night's
American Idol "Idol Gives Back" special, PhotoStamps has inked a deal with the show to produce commemorative stamps featuring the likenesses of each of the
Idol winners so far, including this year's winner. In fact,
Kelly Clarkson's PhotoStamp is already available, with subsequent stamps released each Tuesday.
So if you're planning to kidnap one of Kelly's hats and send her a ransom note with cut-out letters from various newspaper articles about her, demanding that she go out on a date with you if she ever wants to see it again, go that extra mile and show her you really care in that extra-special creepy way by using a Kelly Clarkson PhotoStamp! Remember, net proceeds from the sales of these stamps go to charity. And while you may be crazy, that doesn't mean you don't care!

Hey all you
Idol maniacs. Want to know where your favorite
Idol contestants past and present will be making appearances? Of course you do. You've already got the RV packed, notes to the kids' schools written explaining their prolonged absences and a case of Funyuns jammed underneath the passenger seat. You're a member of the Soul Patrol, a Clayniac and are still suffering from McPheever. Oh you've got it bad.
But
MJ's Big Blog has what you need. No more aimless driving around America shouting "Can anyone tell me where Gina Glocksen is performing tonight?" or "Has anyone seen Jessica Sierra, she still owes me bail money?" Now you can go to one place and plan your journey like the Deadheads before you. Now you can follow Ace Young as he travels around various Borders signing
Chicken Soup for the American Idol Soul, and you can catch Diana DeGarmo at the Braves opener. Oh, and if you're in Atlanta at Kroger tonight, look up Melinda Doolittle, buy some ice cream and tell her I said "Hi."

It's a no-brainer really. Last year's American Idol charity-special, "Idol Gives Back," racked up killer ratings for FOX and raised $75 million for charities in the U.S. and Africa. And more importantly it brought in killer ratings for FOX (did I say that already)! Of course they're going to do it again this year, and now according to Variety, they've set the date for "Idol Gives Back 2008." April 9, 8/7c the two-hour star-studded extravaganza will once again bombard our retinas.

(S06E41) I am exhausted, truly exhausted. TV should be relaxing. But
American Idol's two hour event shows are emotionally-draining. They wear me out. And tonight's show was especially BIG. I'm surprised Ryan didn't call it the "biggest show ever." It actually ran over 2 hours by about eight minutes.
But everything between 8:00 and 10:05 was just filler or commercials. We came here tonight to crown the next
American Idol. The judges give their final thoughts. Randy says, "It's Jordin, baby." Paula is just proud of everyone. She congratulates them both. Simon congratulates Jordin (his pick based on the last song Tuesday night).
74 million votes were cast Tuesday night (for a combined total of 609 million votes cast over the season) and this year's
American Idol is ...

Honestly, I have no idea who is going to win this year's
American Idol. And neither does Simon Cowell. Mr. Opinionated was uncharacteristically at a loss for a definitive prediction,
telling reporters: "I can't call it at this stage. For Blake, he's a brilliant entertainer, but the negative is he's not a fantastic singer. The advantage for Jordin is she is a great singer and the negative is she hasn't done one performance yet which I can remember as a 'wow."'
Several weeks ago, I decided that Jordin Sparks was definitely a shoo-in as this year's winner. And both
Ryan Seacrest and
the odds makers agreed with me, making me that much more confident in my pick. But after last week's results, I'm no longer so sure.

We're down to three remaining challengers in this year's
American Idol, and it looks like it's going to be a very tight race for second place. But according to odds makers,
first place is pretty much a lock for Jordin Sparks -- the odds-on favorite to win this year's
Idol.Odds makers are also predicting a final showdown between Jordin and Blake, leaving Melinda as a third place finisher. But we all know that anything can happen - and it ain't over until Seacrest is out.

If you're a Taylor Hicks fan and wanted to learn some interesting pieces of information to share with your friends about him, you've come to the wrong place.
The
OC Register recently
did a telephone interview with Mr. Soul Patrol and learned he didn't really have all that much to say.
Hicks seemed a little standoffish with his responses and just didn't seem very willing to give anything more than a reserved answer to the interviewer's questions (you can see him give the same treatment to our very own Jay Black
here).

I realize that the title of this post is courting a little controversy, but I think it's a question worth asking. Before we begin though, let me say this: I am not a "fattist". I've been very quickly saying goodbye to my own slim self one pizza slice at a time. Also, I'm a big fan of Santa Claus and William Howard Taft. Plus, I think that the FDA should require syrup on everything -- including syrup.
Okay, now that I've headed off all angry comments with that disclaimer, let's get to the meat of the matter: would it be possible for an overweight woman to win
American Idol?

Howard Cohen of
MiamiHerald.com seems to think so. In today's post he points out that several
AI finalists didn't take top prize, but the show still helped catapult them to success. Jennifer Hudson's Golden Globe win last night certainly puts her on the top of the list for "Most Successful Ex-
American Idol Losers," well, at least for the time being.

I'm going to start off with the negative stuff, because I'm well aware that these are the gems that people want to read so that they can tell me how I'm so horribly, horribly wrong.
I'm not angry, just disappointed: Project Runway, Scrubs. God,
Project Runway was just plain painful this season. Not only did we have to put up with Vincent and Angela for an ungodly long time, they were brought back for an additional challenge! Then, Jeffrey, the designer with the worst collection of all (well, in my personal opinion), won the whole competition. Livid, I was. I definitely expected better taste from what I've long considered the classiest reality program on television. And as for
Scrubs, I think it's lost its charm... JD does that stupid nasal voice all the time (it's at its worst when he does that damn "zoom zoom zoom"), his pregnant girlfriend is an awful character, and Dr. Cox's hair looks like something ripped off a 70s model home floor. I used to think
Scrubs was hysterical, but it's really missing something now and I've almost lost complete motivation to watch. If the upcoming musical episode doesn't restore my faith, I doubt anything will.

Hey, Brigitte here with TV Squad Daily. I'll be covering the TV stories I find interesting each day, Monday through Friday, in this video blog.
Today on TV Squad Daily:
A correction concerning yesterday's show: It was brought to my attention that yesterday's story concerning Michael Jackson's plans to sell his Neverland Ranch on a reality show was untrue. I apologize for the misinformation. I always try to double-check information before using them on the show, but in this case my multiple sources were all incorrect. Thanks to Jason for the heads up. The people behind the FOX megahit say that a bombshell is coming to the show in midseason. To quote producer Cecile Frot-Coutaz, it's "something that will blow America away."
Hmmm ... what could this possibly be? A viewer at home has a chance to win a million dollars? All of the contestants are robots? Ryan Seacrest is going to reveal that he's ... Catholic (hey, where did you think I was going with that?).
Maybe they're going to do a crossover with another FOX show. Maybe bad guys will take over the studio and hold everyone hostage, and then it's up to Jack Bauer to rescue everyone and clear the phone lines so America can get through and vote for their favorite singer.
The new season starts on January 16.

How much for an American Idol to appear at your party?

There's probably no fame-train that moves quicker than the one you board when you get on
American Idol. In as little as five months, you go from struggling young artist to one of the most famous human beings in America. I can imagine it being overwhelming (I mean after all, in just under a month I went from unknown comedian to internationally famous TV Squad blogger, and the literally tens of emails I've received since then have swamped my inbox). To get into the finals, much less actually win the contest, must make for a difficult transition into the world of celebrity.
Even harder than that is maintaining the momentum. For every Kelly Clarkson there's a Reuben Studdard, and there's a kind of second contest after the winner is crowned to see what he or she does with his or her newfound fame.
It's with this is mind, I'm sure, that the latest winner of
American Idol, Taylor Hicks, is releasing his first album. It's called
Taylor Hicks and it's dropping just in time for the holidays (and, one imagines, the never ending string of
American Idol promos that run during said holidays). He was gracious enough to sit for a telephone interview with me to talk about the new album, his recent comments concerning the show, and the worst pre-
Idol gig he ever had.
