The earlier announcement that
comedienne Wanda Sykes might be one hair pulling development meeting away from getting her own late night show was a promising one.
She's got a good bit of star power to boost her ratings. She's had a good bit of experience as a late night comedy writer, most notably with
The Chris Rock Show and least notably with
The Keenan Ivory Wayans Show. She's also damn funny.
If Fox turns her into their newest late night comedy show host, it raises a worrying question: what will become of Spike Feresten?

The last week ever of
Late Night with Conan O'Brien was bound to include a few shockers. And while I'm still hoping that one of them won't be the failure to launch of Andy Richter's homecoming, another bigger staple came to an end and was probably followed by a long nap and an anthill of shame and loneliness.
Conan held a going away sketch for one of the show's most popular and least marketable characters, the Masturbating Bear.
If you haven't seen this infamous character "in action," feel yourself (not that way sicko) among the fortunate because it's one of the most hilarious and personally shameful moments you will ever experience in your life. Greater even than your prom, your cousin's drunken wedding and your first college beer party where you woke up with one less eyebrow combined.

One of television's least appreciated talk shows is one step closer to getting some real estate in Fox's front store window.
Starting this Saturday,
Talkshow with Spike Feresten will have one-hour episodes instead of the measly little piecemeal 30 minutes Fox has been giving it.
Still not convinced that Fox is giving this show the treatment it deserves? It's not only giving it more time, but it's also bumping it ahead of
Mad TV for six whole weeks
. Wow, maybe this means Fox will give Mike Judge a new animated show and will replace it ... with
Family Guy.

In a
press release sent out today, FOX revealed the premiere dates of both its returning shows and five new additions. Most returning series are back in their old timeslots. However, a lot are paired with a different series than they were during the 2006-2007 season.
Note that this schedule only lists shows beginning in September.

If you haven't seen Talkshow with Spike Feresten, you're not the only one. The Saturday night talk show that airs on FOX after MAD TV hasn't exactly received stellar ratings, but apparently it's attracted enough of that younger demographic the advertisers love, so it's getting a second season.
I've been watching it this season, and while it didn't exactly come out with guns blazing, Feresten is a funny and amicable host, and the half-hour running time is perfect. Can you imagine Conan or Letterman cut down to half an hour? No more filler and long interviews, just funny funny funny and then end the show. Well, maybe that wouldn't work for those guys, but it works in my little fantasy world.
Variety also reports that talks are still underway concerning a new season of MAD TV. There's no word on whether it will or won't be renewed, but it is possible that Talkshow could take over MAD TV's slot if MAD TV show doesn't return.

If you've never heard of Spike Feresten, you've at least heard some of his funny words. As a writer on
Seinfeld, he penned "The Soup Nazi" episode, which many consider one of the best on the classic series. He also wrote for
SNL, Late Show with David Letterman and
The Dana Carvey Show. Now he's in front of the camera with
TALKSHOW with Spike Feresten (Saturdays at midnight on FOX), his twisted take on the tried-and-true late-night talk show format. How twisted? Well, in the last episdoe, he scoured a crummy neighborhood in L.A. looking for a sidekick, had Mary Lynn Rajskub operate heavy machinery after downing half a bottle of Nyquil, and presented a barbershop quartet that sung homo-erotic songs.
I caught up with Spike right before he
conducted a Q&A with the cast of fellow FOX show
Standoff at last week's
New York Television Festival. We talked a little about his new show, but mostly just dicussed
Seinfeld. The interview is after the jump.
