Coming soon: the Susan Boyle TV special

susan_boyle_faceIf you don't already know her story, get ready to hear all about it. On December 13, the TV Guide Network will present a Susan Boyle special. An hour all about the unlikely Scottish singing sensation. I Dreamed a Dream: The Susan Boyle Story is a one-hour documentary/interview/performance special chronicling the rise of the Britain's Got Talent performer who became a You Tube phenom and has just released her first CD.

American Idol's Simon Cowell is the mastermind behind this production, which will also be broadcast in England on the ITV1. It'll have celebrity interviews including Simon himself, footage of Susan's hometown, her TV appearances till now, and -- naturally -- Susan singing songs from I Dreamed A Dream, the new CD.

Review: Dancing with the Stars - Performance 8 Results

Dancing with the Stars' final five
(S09E17) Dancing with the Stars continues to chug along having five couples become four. With such a small number, the results shows feel even more stretched out, slowly saving contestants one at a time.

Encore - Joanna & Derek - Paso Doble - Len thought that even though Mya had the higher score, the paso was so detailed that it deserved the encore. The two actually looked better with their hair tonight than last night; I could tell that it was them. On the second time around, I believed that they deserved a 30 and Mya only should have gotten a 29.

Susan Boyle is going to Dancing with the Stars

susan_boyle_singingEverybody's favorite singing newcomer, England's Susan Boyle, is going to appear on Dancing With the Stars this week. She will not be doing the samba or the quick step. Susan will be singing, promoting her upcoming CD, I Dreamed A Dream, in stores on November 24.

Luckily for Susan, Sharon Osbourne will not be on the show. Or maybe it's lucky for Sharon because after the horrible things she said about SB, Susan would probably deck her if she had the chance. Last week, while on Sirius radio, Sharon was compelled to share her opinion of Susan's sudden success.

Susan Boyle's CD premiering on QVC

susan_boyle_singingOn November 24, British music sensation Susan Boyle's first CD will be released, and as I wrote before, it won't be filled with just show tunes. It's been getting a lot of buzz considering that Susan has not been going on television promoting the album... till now.

Susan will appear on QVC on November 4 to launch her debut album I Dreamed a Dream. If you tune in, you'll see Susan talking about the CD -- it doesn't sound like she'll be singing live -- but they'll spin some cuts and urge you to order.

If you do, there'll be a bonus DVD of rare footage that you'll get along with the eclectic batch of songs she's recorded. How eclectic? Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses," The Monkees' "Daydream Believer," Madonna's "You'll See" and, of course, from Les Miserables, "I Dreamed A Dream."

America's Got Talent: And the winner is... (season finale)

America's Got Talent
(S04E26) This is it, people. The time has come to name the winner of America's Got Talent, the world's biggest talent search. The two-hour (!) final results bash included performances from Britain's Got Talent sensation Susan Boyle, The X Factor's Leona Lewis, Thelma Houston, Cirque du Soleil, Rascal Flatts, and Shakira. Sadly, none of the previous AGT winners performed.

Based on the TV Squad poll I've included in my review of the Top 10 performance show, 35.1% of the voters, including myself, said Barbara Padilla would win. Kevin Skinner received 22.2% of your votes, while Recycled Percussion placed third in our poll with 19.4%. The other contestants all got under 7% of your votes. (Note that these results were accurate at the beginning of the results show.)

Did the TV Squad poll results match reality? Official results coming up!

If you haven't watched the finale yet and do not want to be spoiled as to who won the competition, it's time to click elsewhere now!

America's Got Talent: Final performances

America's Got Talent
(S04E25) The biggest talent search in the world started its competition three months ago. After a summer of questionable judges decisions, talent performances and Hoff-isms, it's time to crown the winner of the show's fourth season.

But before the America's Got Talent winner can be announced in the live season finale to air on Wednesday, featuring a guest appearance by Susan Boyle, the Top 10 acts needed to perform one last time for America's votes. My comments and predictions coming up!

America's Got Talent books Susan Boyle

Susan_Boyle_Harpers_BazaarSimon Cowell predicted it and he was right (and he has a hand in all this, you know). Susan Boyle is going to appear on the season finale of America's Got Talent, giving all of us a chance to see her as she is now. As this beautiful photo shows, celebrity has already transformed Susan. The shock to her system after the sudden fame has apparently waned, and she is now ready to bring her act to America. Britain's Got Talent nearly overwhelmed her, but that was then and this is now.

The appearance on America's Got Talent will be included in the NBC show's two-part finale airing September 14 and 16. And, they're calling this her "official" U.S. TV debut, but I think that's referring to singing only, because she's been on talk shows.

Guess who might volunteer to play Susan Boyle in a biopic?

Susan BoyleAccording to the UK Telegraph (and I always have trouble believing anything from the British media, but bear with me), none other than Robin Williams has offered himself up to play Susan Boyle in any planned movie of her life. Apparently, he's been doing impressions of the breakout singer for celebrity friends.

This could very well lead to Robin's second Oscar (his first for a non-supporting role). If he pulls this off, he could be as impressive as Meryl Streep playing Julia Child. Of course, if he can't pull it off, it would look like a sad attempt at repeating Mrs. Doubtfire.

However, unless they start work on the movie tomorrow, this will likely be chalked up as an interesting and amusing rumor. While her story is interesting, Susan Boyle's star has been dimming somewhat and it wouldn't surprise me if she was relegated to Celebrity Big Brother in the near future.

America's Got Talent: Audition show 10

Susan Boyle - America's Got Talent
(S04E10) "We've saved the best for last." - Nick about this being the last audition episode

The last America's Got Talent audition episode not only featured loads of good performances -- sadly, most shown in a quick montage -- but also an interview with Britain's Got Talent's Susan Boyle. The "Susan Boyle - Daring to Dream" interview with Meredith Vieira depicted well Susan's path to fame and her life struggles, but I would have preferred to have seen Boyle perform live on the show during one of the performance episodes in August. Then the contestants could have interacted with someone who went very far in the competition and be inspired by her story, as well as show that everyday people who truly have talent can become stars.

Before we get to my two cents about tonight's performances, I wanted to point out that contestant Shaunie, who performed a unique singing number in last night's episode, dropped by the comments section in my review of Audition show 9 to share the link to his YouTube channel so you can watch more of his talent.

America's Got Talent

(S04E09) "MySpace is delivering the weird, the wacky, the wonderful." - The Hoff

So tonight we were treated with a round of MySpace auditions. As was the case last season, the MySpace episode doesn't bring anything special to the show, since the producers basically choose bad and good acts from performers who post videos of themselves performing on MySpace. Isn't the goal of the MySpace episode -- well, episodes this year since tomorrow is also a MySpace one -- to show that talent can be discovered on the web? Therefore, producers should only select acts that have potential based on their MySpace page. No?

In any case, to learn more about the MySpace episodes, as well as be reminded of last year's America's Got Talent MySpace episode, go to the America's Got Talent MySpace page. So let's review what MySpace gave us tonight, shall we?

Susan Boyle is the most powerful person in the world

Susan BoyleHow powerful? NBC originally refused to run President Obama's prime time press conference about his health care plan tomorrow night at 9PM because it would interfere with the highly-rated America's Got Talent and the show's interview with Britain singing sensation Susan Boyle. So what did the White House do?

They moved Obama's speech.

Drop Dead Diva -- An early look

brooke_elliott_margaret_cho_drop_dead_divaCertain shows seem to be perfect for certain television networks. That's the point of programming, no doubt, and Lifetime has done a good job filling their female-centric niche with TV movies and series like Army Wives. That said, I think there will soon be a new favorite on Lifetime and it's called Drop Dead Diva. It's chick-flick, rom-com for weekly TV viewers, and while men might enjoy the whimsical plot and attractive characters, this is a show that ladies will adore.

If you were talking high concept like a Hollywood pitchman, you could describe Drop Dead Diva as Ally McBeal for the Lane Bryant set. Or maybe it's Sara Lee meets Heaven Can Wait. However, you put it, Drop Dead Diva is a switcheroo story about a vapid, but lovable, gorgeous size 2 model who dies at the exact same time as a brilliant, generous size 16 workaholic attorney, and in one of those wonderful Hollywood comedy devices, shallow Deb's spirit winds up in good Jane's body.

America's Got Talent turns Chicken Catcher into a Boyle

The Chicken Catcher sang his way into U.S. hearts on America's Got Talent. The overnight popularity of singing sensation Susan Boyle following her appearance on Britain's Got Talent all but guaranteed it'd only be a matter of time before the U.S. version of the show tried to manufacture the same energy.

Here are the necessary ingredients:

  • One national talent show where Joe Six Pack and Suzy Temp can reach for the polished brass ring of stardom.
  • One cynical mob eager to tear down anyone who dares to stand up out of the crowd without meeting nebulous performance standards.
  • One defective rube (either chubby, ugly, stupid or -- worst of all -- rural) who seems oblivious to the mob's hostility.
  • Three judges who are in on the bit while acting incredulous.

Of course, the rube needs to have genuine talent -- as in the case of Boyle and singer Kevin Skinner from Kentucky from this week's auditions on America's Got Talent.

Are you ready for America's Got Talent to take over your summer?

America's Got Talent"The biggest talent search in the history," as former America's Got Talent host Jerry Springer used to say over and over again, is beginning its fourth season on Tuesday.

Judges David Hasselhoff, Sharon Osbourne and Piers Morgan will return to give their two cents about the acts performed on stage in front of them. One cast change is the arrival of Nick Cannon as host. Let's hope that Nick won't read the teleprompter too much and will have better interactions with the contestants than Springer did.

Want to know more about this season's AGT? Details coming up!

Susan Boyle could appear on America's Got Talent

The unstable Susan Boyle could perform on America's Got Talent.Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle could jump from her runner-up appearance on Britain's Got Talent to perform on the colonial remake, America's Got Talent.

According to producers, they'd love Boyle to sing in front of millions of U.S. viewers. There's no word if they'd consider changing the name of the show to America's Got Talented, Frumpy 48 Year Old Scottish Women Who Had a Nervous Breakdown after Almost Winning the Overseas Show We're Ripping Off.

The self-confessed virgin had rarely stepped foot outside her village in Scotland before taking a shot at fame on ITV. But, her breakout performance made her an online sensation.
